COUNTERFEIT SPRINKLERS
The approvals agencies, Underwriters Laboratories and FM Approvals, are constantly watching out
for counterfeit items with their label or stamp on them. Both agencies publish notices when they
discover counterfeit equipment. While most of the counterfeit sprinklers were found in Asia, Middle
East and Europe, the counterfeit sprinklers could be found all over the world.
The fire sprinklers have not been evaluated by either agency to the appropriate standards for safety
and it is unknown if the fire sprinklers comply with any safety requirements.

Fire Sprinkler: Tyco

General
All of the counterfeit Tyco fire sprinklers have the word TYCO embossed on wrench boss of the
sprinkler frame. Three of the four models have the words Job F5 printed on the thermo bulb. The fire
sprinkler was not manufactured by Tyco International, Inc., and the thermo bulb was not
manufactured by Job, GmbH.
Note that the counterfeit fire sprinkler is constructed similar to a fire sprinkler that is authorized to bear
the UL Mark. The noticeable differences include:
• The authentic Tyco sprinkler has a pip cap at the base of the glass bulb to protect the bulb,
while the counterfeit fire sprinkler does not.
• The authentic sprinkler frame has straight lines while the counterfeit sprinkler frame is
rounded.
• The frame finish is smooth on the counterfeit fire sprinkler whereas the authentic fire sprinkler
frame is casted and therefore rougher.
