What are serfs?
● Serfs are almost the same as peasants but lower
● A serf is a peasant who lives under the political system of feudalism – they
aren’t just unique to Russia but were found across Europe throughout the
middle ages.
● A serf could buy their own freedom if they could get the money, but where
could they get the money? They were uneducated and mostly unskilled.
● It was one of the consequences of the Tartar devastation during the 13th
century when peasants became homeless and settled on the land of wealthy
Russians.

● Serfs couldn’t be bought or sold but they couldn’t leave their land without
permission.
● The 1861 Emancipation of Russian Serfs was the single most important
reform of the reign of Tsar Alexander II.
