Reflect on your teaching experience and answer these questions:
1. What were two strengths of the lesson? –
I had everything planned out and prepared for the lesson. I also engaged the children through the use of manipulatives.
2. What are two areas of the lesson that need improvement? –
My explanation of the skip counting needs to be improved. I feel that my explanation was not always the clearest for each group. The pace of the lesson needs improvement as well. For the first group, we didn’t get through the whole worksheet whereas for the other two groups, we were able to. This also was dependent upon the strengths of the children and how quickly they were able to pick up on the material.
3. What would I do differently, if I were to reteach this lesson? –
If I were to reteach this lesson, I would have the index flash cards be used in a more efficient way. The organization of them was a little off and I wasn’t sure if they were truly helping the children or just confusing them. I would also have more manipulatives be a part of the lesson and connect the numbers to real-world scenarios or experiences.
4. What biases, if any, existed in the materials, activities, language, or
interactions with children? – No biases existed.
5. Did anything surprise me? –
I surprised with how well some of the children did. Some of them caught on very quickly while others had to spend more time with the index cards. I was also surprised by how well the small groups worked. For many of the learning support students, they really need that one-on-one attention. It also kind of surprised me how much guidance some of those kids truly need.
