Grammaire

Third Group : Verbs whose infinitive ends in –re and irregular verbs.
i. All verbs whose infinitive ends in ‘er’ belong to this group (except aller)

Second group of verbs – ‘ir’ verbs
i. Most verbs whose infinitive ends with ‘ir’ belong to this group.
ii. The present tense of ‘ir’ verbs is conjugated by removing the ‘r’ endings and
addings –s, -s, -t, - t, -ssons, -ssez, -ssent, -ssent to the radical of the verb.

Il réussit He/it succeeds
Elle réussit She/it succeeds

Negation (Negative)
To form a negative sentence in French, one must use two words ‘ne’ and ‘pas’. ‘ne’ is
placed before the verb and ‘pas’ after the verb.
e.g.
Je ne parle pas anglais.
I do not speak English.
--12--
COUNTRIES LES PAYS LES NATIONALITÉS
Masculin (pl.) Féminin (pl.)
t+iksu
These verbs are conjugated in the same manner as other ‘er’ verbs. The only peculiarity is
that in the ‘nouns’ form an ‘e’ is added to the radical before adding the endings.
--13--
Elle voyage She/it travels Elle mange She/it eats
Nous voyageons We travel Nous mangeons We eat
Vous voyagez You travel Vous mangez You eat

--15--
Third group of verbs
The regular ‘re’ verbs and the irregular verbs ending with ‘re’, ‘oir’ and ‘ir’ are put together in
the third group. All the verbs of this group do not follow the same pattern of conjugation
hence it is advisable to learn the verbs in a set of three or four or even two at times.
Verbs :
Prendre - to take
Apprender - to learn
Comprender - to understand
In these verbs, we remove the last three letters i.e. ‘dre’ and then add the endings –ds, -ds,
-d, -ons, -ez and –nent to the radical of the verb.
Verbs :
Dire – to say
Lire - to read
écrire – to write
In these verbs, we remove ‘re’ and then add the endings –s, -s, -t, -ons, -ez and –ent to the
radical of the verb bet each of these verbs has a certain peculiarity which must be observed.

Bonjour,
