My friends and I have just returned
from an interesting and amusing holiday at
Lake Maninjau near Padang. The lake was a
crater surrounded by dense forests and rice
fields. We swam in the lake, ate fish from the
lake and enjoyed the cool breezes.
From there we had a two hour trip to
Bukit Tinggi, a small hill top town which was
clean, cool,,, and friendly. Day trips around
the hill took us to some spectacular
countryside with coffee, clove and cinnamon
farms. The traditional Minangkabau houses,

are everywhere.
On the following day, we went by
plane to Medan and then a bus journey to
Bukit Lawang, home of the WWF Orang
Utan Rehabilitation Centre. We stayed in the
jungle in a very charming "hotel" with no
running water and electricity. We bathed in
the river and dinner under a kerosene lamp.
But, it was quite a wonderful sigh: to see
these giant creatures that came swinging
along on trees. The surrounding jungle was
alive with monkeys and gibbons.
We spent one night in the jungle after

rivers. From Bukit Lawang we traveled to
