1.4 CONTRIBUTION TO GDP:

The service industry GDP is 8%

The contribution made by the service sector in India’s real gross domestic product has increased
over the years. However, the rate of growth has not been at par with expectations. In the planning
process of India’s economic development, a lot of emphasis was given on the heavy industries
and this led to greater expectations from the service sector.

1.5 CARPET INDUSTRY GROWTH

The Indian carpet industry during the post-independence era has witnessed an export-led-growth.
Besides, export prospects of carpets basically depend on overseas demand and domestic supply
potential. Employing over 2 million weavers, it is an old and well established decentralized
sector, employing over 2 million weavers.

Despite being one of the largest producers and exports of carpets across the globe, the
unfortunate part is the demand for these handmade carpets and rugs have witnessed a downfall.

In spite of the booming handicrafts sector in India, the demand for carpets are pretty high in
international markets as compared to our country.

Further, the sector has made rapid strides during the post-independence era, especially during
and after 70s in the wake of overseas demand which stimulated carpet production and exports.

1.6 HISTORY AND DEVELOPMENT OF INDUSTRY

It is believed that the first Mughal emperor Babur (1526-30) imported carpets from
turkey and Persia to enhance the ambiance of his court. But, later imperial workshops for
carpet production were actually set up by Akbar in Agra and Fatehpur Sikri. With the
ruin of Mughal Empire, Indian handicrafts faced a setback. During 19 th century local
carpet workshops were governed and directed by English or European companies. In the
post-British period such indigenous industries started flourishing in different parts of the
country. Each region engaged in making different types of carpets with variations in
material(skill, wool, etc.), designs, color and quality. On the basis of quality of wool used
in the production, the feel of carpets differs. Northern region carpets are rough and
opaque. The leading carpet manufacturing workshops are located in Kashmir, Rajasthan,
Punjab,Uttarpradesh, Andrapradesh and Himachal Pradesh. Carpet industry in Kashmir is
Famous fine quality hand knotted carpets, which are expensive and considered as lifelong
investment. An average piece is made with about 324 knots per square inch. Persian
culture influenced the Kashmiri carpet industry has acquired an indigenous character.
Kashmir has developed some of its own designs based on, the traditional paisley, shawl
patterns ,leaves and flowers. In Kashmir, Talim method is used to train craftsmen. Wool
is the basic material used. Silk is also commonly used not only for the pile but also for
the wrap and weft. The number of knots on the back of the carpet indicates the quality.
Bokhra hand knotted carpets are one of the finest with about 120-500 knots in a square
inch. The deep pile of Indian hand knotted carpets comes in magnificent colors, with
designs which are oriential, exotic and uniquely modern. Namdhas: The namdha is
specialty of Kashmir; these carpets are embroidered with woollen thread that completely
covers the base of Hessian.
Carpet weaving is an ancient Indian tradition, with the industry flourishing in the country
16th century on wards. Today India is the world’s largest producer and exporter of
handmade carpets in terms of value and volume. Around 75-85 per cent of carpets
manufactured in India are exported. Indian carpets are known worldwide for their
excellent design, fascinating colours and quality.

canvas to build on for decorating your home, painting, choosing furniture, etc. it’s easy to
stick with staple and use other items in your home as your statement pieces.

Although bright colors are trending, neutral carpets are still popular today, and these
browns and grays will probably remain popular for decades to come.

2.2 Nature of business:

A carpet is a textile floor covering typically consisting of an upper layer of pile attached
to a backing. The pile was traditionally made from wool, but, since the 20th century,
synthetic fibers such as polypropylene, nylon or polyester are often used, as these fibers
are less expensive than wool. The pile usually consists of twisted tufts which are typically
heat-treated to maintain their structure. The term “carpet” can be is often used
interchangeably with the term “rug”, although the term “carpet” can be applied to a floor
covering that covers an entire house, whereas a “rug” is generally no bigger than a single
room, and traditionally does not even span from one well to another, and is typically not
even attached as part of the floor.

Carpets are used for a variety of purposes, including insulating a person’s feet from a
cold tile or concrete floor, making a room more comfortable as a place to sit on the floor
(e.g., when playing with children or as a prayer rug), reducing sound from walking
(particularly in apartment buildings) and adding decoration or color to a room. Carpets
can be made in any color by using differently dyed fibers. Carpets can have many
different types of patterns and motifs used to decorate the surface. In the 2000s, carpets
are used in industrial and commercial establishments such as retail stores and hotels and
private homes. In the 2010s, a huge range of carpets and rugs are available at many price
and quality levels, ranging from inexpensive, synthetic carpets that are mass-produced in

The McKinsey 7S Framework is a management model developed by well-known business

consultants Robert H. Waterman, Jr. and Tom Peters in the 1980s. This was a strategic vision for
groups, to include businesses, business units, and teams. The 7 Ss’ are structure, strategy,
systems, skills, style, staff and shared values.

The model is most often used as an organizational analysis tool to assess and monitor changes in
the internal situation of an organization.

The model is based on the theory that, for an organization to perform well, these seven elements
need to be aligned and mutually reinforcing. So, the model can be used to help identify what
needs to be realigned to improve performance, or to maintain alignment (and performance)
during other types of change.
