Crochet Rose Garland

designed by © Elvira Jane 2017

US crochet terms
This beautiful rose garland makes a perfect decoration for a special occasion, such as
adorning pillars and posts for a wedding, or simply use it to brighten up your home. It
measures approximately 1.9 meters, but can easily be extended by adding more roses
and rosebuds.
Please note: This item is NOT suitable for children. It presents a
choking/strangulation hazard and must be kept out of their reach at all times.

Materials Abbreviations
100 grams of Stylecraft Special dk yarn in each of ch = chain
desired shades* dc = double crochet
3mm and 4mm Crochet Hook hdc = half double crochet
Plastic crochet rings 2 x 26mm sc = single crochet
Wool Needle sl st = slip stitch
Small pair of scissors st(s) = stitch(es)

The pattern is made up of 5 main elements. 1. the rose. 2. the leaf (backing the rose). 3.
the rosebud. 4. the rosebud casing. 5. the cord joining the roses and rosebuds which
incorporates the spirals.
Parts 1 to 4 are worked with a 4mm crochet hook.
Part 5 (the cord and spirals) are worked with a 3mm crochet hook.
The diameter of the leaf measures approximately 7.5cm. If you need to change your hook
size to achieve this result, you should continue to use the same hook size for the rose,
rosebud, and rosebud casing.

Leaf (make 6)
Begin by making a magic ring.
Round 1
2ch, 12 dc into ring, sl st into top of first dc.
Round 2
3ch (counts as 1dc), 1dc into same place, (1dc,
4ch, 1dc) all into next st, *2dc into following
st, (1dc, 4ch, 1dc) all into next st** Repeat from
* to ** four more times, sl st into third ch of
3ch at beginning of round.
Round 3
sl st between 3ch and next dc, *5dc into next
4ch space, 2ch, sl st into first ch, 5dc into same
4ch space, sl st between following
second and third dc**. Repeat from * to ** four more times,
5dc into next 4ch space, 2ch, sl st into first ch, 5dc into same 4ch space, sl st into the first
sl st
at beginning of round. Cut yarn, allowing a long end which will be used to attached the
rose to the leaf. Draw magic ring closed and sew in loose end.

Rose (make 6)
Row 1
45ch (the last four chains count as 1hdc
and 2ch of the next row)
Row 2
Work into one loop only of chain stitches
in this row. 1hdc into fifth ch from hook,
*miss next ch, (1hdc, 2ch, 1hdc) into
following ch** Repeat from * to ** to end.
You will have 21 “V” shapes with 2ch
between the top of the “V” which you will
work the petals into in the next row. This
row will start to coil as you work along it, but
don't worry, this will be helpful when
shaping the rose.
Row 3
Turn, 3ch (counts as 1dc), 5dc into first 2ch
space, 1sc between next 2hdc, 6dc into
following 2ch space** Repeat from * to ** to
end, 1sc into same 2ch space as last set of
6dc. 21 petals made. Allowing a long
length of yarn (to secure the shape of the
rose), cut yarn.

Secure the rose into shape. Now, using the long end of the leaf, attach all the roses to the
leaves. Secure all loose ends, and set to one side.

Rosebud (make 7)
The rosebud is worked in the same way as the rose, it's just a much shorter length.
Row 1
7ch (the last four chains count as 1hdc and 2ch of the next row)
Row 2
Work into one loop only of chain stitches in this row. 1hdc into fifth ch from hook, miss
next ch, (1hdc, 2ch, 1hdc) into following ch. You will have 2 “V” shapes with 2ch between
the top of the “V” which you will work the petals into in the next row.
Row 3
Turn, 3ch (counts as 1dc), 5dc into first 2ch space, 1sc between next 2hdc, 6dc into
following 2ch space** Repeat from * to ** to end, 1sc into same 2ch space as last set of
6dc. 2 petals made. Cut yarn allowing enough length to secure the end. Do not trim ends
yet as they will be useful when fitting into the rosebud casing.

Rosebud casing (make 7)

Round 1
Make a magic ring, 6sc into ring, sl st into first sc. Draw ring closed and secure end.
Round 2
2ch, 1dc into same place, 1dc into remaining stitches of previous round, sl st into first dc.
Cut yarn, allowing enough length to work a couple of stitches to secure the rosebud in
place.
Securing the rosebuds to the casing is a bit fiddly, as the pieces are small, so take a little
time working on them to ensure you are happy with the end result.

Attach all the rosebuds to the casings by threading the
two loose ends (of each rosebud) through the centre
ring of each casing. Just the petals, of the rosebud,
should be exposed from the casing. With the loose end,
of your casing, secure the rosebud in place. Feed the
loose ends, of the rosebud, back into the casing, and
out through the top, then trim so they are not visible. Do
NOT be tempted to trim these ends as positioned, in the
photo, as the cut will be too close to the start and end
knots of the crochet. Set to one side.

You should now have six complete roses and seven

complete rosebuds ready to attach to the cord.

Cord and Spirals (change to 3mm

crochet hook)
Work 24hdc around one crochet ring (or
enough to completely hide the plastic ring),
sl st into first hdc, work 60 taut ch sts.
Continue as follows.

[*15ch, 2sc into second ch from hook, 2sc into
each of next 12ch, (1sc, 1sl st) into following ch**.
Now attach the rose bud with a sl st through the
base of the rosebud casing (make sure it's firmly
attached). Repeat from * to **. Sl st into the last
taut ch of the cord, then work 40 taut ch sts, sl st
into a sl st in between two leaves, cast off and
secure loose end.]

Next section of cord and spirals (continue

with 3mm crochet hook)
Attach yarn between two leaves directly opposite
where you attached the previous cord. Work 40
taut ch sts. Repeat from [ to ].

Repeat this section until all roses and rosebuds

are attached. Once the last spiral is complete,
work 60 taut ch sts, then work 24hdc around your
second plastic ring. Cast off and secure loose
end.

Alternative idea: You can easily turn this pattern into bunting, by working the cord
continuously and attaching at one point of each leaf. This will make the length shorter
than stated for the garland.
