Writing Task 1
+
The Reading Test
2
PRO TIP: It is very important that you write your letter with the correct level
of formality. This is actually a very common mistake that candidates make, so
make sure you think about thelevel of formality that is appropriate for the
reader (NOT the Examiner!) of your letter.

3
Pro Tip: Make sure that you include exactly what is asked of you in your
letter. Don’t “go rogue” and waste time giving information that is not being
asked for in the task!

4
5
PRO TIP: Write the key information in the instructions in the same order –
this will save you time!
6
PRO TIP: Get into the habit of brainstorming words that have the same
meaning as those found in the task and words that are related to the general
topic of the letter. This will help you avoid copying and may even give you
some ideas for responding to the instructions.

Useful Phrases for GT Task 1:
PRO TIP: The phrases below cover a variety of tasks found in GT letters, and they are quite
useful, but do not ignore the content of your letter. You need to have plausible, relevant ideas
in order to get a high score in Task Achievement.

PRO TIP: Using the reading materials for the Academic Test will help prepare you, so
do not assume they are a waste of time. The academic test uses same question types,
and is considered a more challenging reading test overall.
