INTERNET: TROUBLE OR SOLUTION ?

If there’s one aspect of the Internet that I’ve both enjoyed and feared, it’s the
socializing on-line. I enjoy talking in e-mail and in Usenet newsgroups but I’ve never had the
slightest interest in trying to find romance on-line. Trying to arrange romantic encounters on-
line with strangers is generally held to be a really bad idea. So many ugly stories abound
about people arranging liaisons with Net dates and having horrifying results that I’m not even
going to spend much time detailing them. Let me just give you an example: the guy who
started chatting with a female character on-line, got to be friend with her, talked about real
life matters, and over time developed a certain fondness for the woman he thought he was
talking with. Things eventually got to the point that the guy fell in love, decided that he
wanted to marry her, proposed, was accepted, and made plans to meet his fiancée. They met
and instead of finding the blonde dancer he thought he was there to meet, he found a strong,
bearded computer programmer, holding a pink carnation.

GIVE A KID A HAND

The first five years of a child’s life are critical, the experts
tell us. That’s when their characters are formed. That’s when
caring counts. Someone to show them how to do things.
Someone just to hold them. Unfortunately, for many of the
world’s children, that’s just what they don’t get. And society
suffers as a result – because a deprived child has a lot less
chance of growing up an adjusted adult. Some of us believe
we can change things – or at least try. And we need your help.
No, don’t reach for your pocket. It’s not your money – it’s you
we want. In your community there are dozens of ways you
can make personal contact with kids and make a difference to
their lives. Maybe you’ll help one to read, to play a game, to
learn to laugh. Maybe you’ll just be the hand that holds out a
little hope...
