Chapter 1
Bed Frames

Purpose
This manual gives detailed cleaning and disinfecting procedures for 
Hill-Rom® Beds and Mattresses. The instructions in this manual are
recommendations and are not designed to replace more appropriate cleaning and
disinfection protocols created by your facility for particular infection situations.

This manual has two chapters: one for bed frames and one for mattresses.

Audience
This manual is intended for use by facility-approved persons only. To ignore this
restriction could cause severe injury to people and serious damage to equipment.

read and understand:

For purposes of this manual:
• TotalCare® Bed System includes—TotalCare® Bed System, TotalCare®
Bariatric Bed, TotalCare® Bariatric Plus Therapy System, and TotalCare®
Duo® 2 System
• Affinity® Birthing Bed includes—Affinity® Three Birthing Bed and
Affinity® Four Birthing Beds

Cleaning Frequency
Between patient use and during extended patient stays, Hill-Rom recommends that
you clean and disinfect the bed. Refer to your facility’s cleaning and disinfection
policies for frequency.

Daily, Hill-Rom recommends that you clean and disinfect the high touch areas of the
bed, such as: siderails, siderail latches, footboard, headboard, patient pendant, and
patient helper (if installed).

Cleaning Warnings and Cautions

WARNING:
The potential for electrical shock exists with electrical equipment.
Failure to follow facility protocol could cause death or serious injury.

WARNING:
Failure to unplug the bed from its power source before you clean or
disinfect the bed could cause injury or equipment damage.

CAUTION:
Do not expose the bed to excessive moisture. Injury or equipment
damage could occur.

CAUTION:
Do not steam clean or power wash the bed. Pressure and excessive
moisture can damage the protective surfaces of the bed and its
electrical components.

CAUTION:
Do not use harsh or abrasive cleansers, solvents, or scouring pads.
Equipment damage could occur.

CAUTION:
Make sure the bed frame and mattress are dry before you put the
mattress on the bed. Failure to do so could cause equipment damage.

goggles, face shield, shoe covers, and apron per facility protocol)

Hill-Rom recommends the use of a disinfectant with a pH value less than 9, preferably
with a neutral pH. Hill-Rom recommends the use of an EPA registered (US only),
tuberculocidal, disinfectant.

NOTE:
The solutions listed can be used to clean and/or disinfect. Refer to the manufacturer’s
label for instructions.

General Bed Frame Cleaning Instructions
1. Set the brakes.

2. Raise the bed frame to a comfortable working height.

3. Remove the headboard and footboard.

WARNING:
Failure to unplug the bed could cause equipment damage or injury.

4. Unplug the bed.

5. Disable the battery or allow the battery to time out.

6. For TotalCare® Bed Systems raise the head of


the mattress and disconnect the air hoses and
any electrical wires present.

NOTE:
Some TotalCare® Bed Systems have individual
hose connections and some have a single connector
with multiple hose connections on it.

7. For Affinity® Birthing Bed, disconnect the air


hose on each side of the bed, under the sleep
deck.

8. For TotalCare® Duo® 2 Beds, do as


follows:

9. Use these to clean the bed:


• A soft cloth soaked with warm
water and a facility-approved c.
general cleaning soap/detergent
solution. Make sure the cloth is
not so wet as to cause the
cleaning solution to pool on the bed components.
• A soft brush to remove stains and resistant soil. Do not use harsh or
abrasive cleansers, solvents, or scouring pads.

10. Clean the bed. Give special attention to these areas:


• Headboard
• Footboard
• Siderails—the upper and under sides of the siderail releases, pendants,
caregiver and patient controls, and the latch areas and latch pins of the
mount brackets
• Bed frame
• Casters and brake/steer pedals
• All other bed components
• All installed accessories (IV poles, ISS poles, traction adapters, and the
like)
• Roller bumpers
• Power cord
• Patient helper (if installed)

11. Refer to the specific bed cleaning sections on the next few pages for further
cleaning details.

12. After you clean the bed, disinfect the bed.

Disinfect
Repeat the cleaning instructions while you use the facility approved disinfectant.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use of the disinfectant. After you
disinfect the bed, rinse the bed with clean water to remove all disinfectant residue.

After you clean and disinfect the bed, install a clean and disinfected mattress. Connect
the air hoses and retaining straps as applicable based on the mattress.

Disinfect
Repeat the cleaning instructions while you use the facility approved disinfectant.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use of the disinfectant. After you

Mattress Cleaning
For air mattresses, go to “Air Mattress Cleaning and Disinfecting Instructions” on
page 2-4. This includes all air mattresses for the beds listed in Chapter 1.

For low air loss coverlets, go to “Low Air Loss Coverlets” on page 2-7.

For foam mattresses, go to “Foam Mattress Cleaning” on page 2-9.

For Affinity® Three and Affinity® Four Birthing Bed mattresses, go to “Affinity®
Birthing Bed Mattress Cleaning” on page 2-11.

Cleaning Frequency
Between patient use and during extended patient stays, Hill-Rom recommends that
you clean and disinfect the surface. Hill-Rom recommends that you clean the mattress
when you change the sheets or give the patient a bath. If the mattress is soiled, clean
and disinfect the mattress before you put on clean linens. Refer to your facility’s
cleaning and disinfection policies for frequency.

Steam Cleaning
The mattresses listed in this manual can not be steam cleaned.

Air Mattress Cleaning and Disinfecting Instructions

Clean

CAUTION:
Do not steam clean the mattress. Equipment damage could occur.

Do not steam clean the mattress.

1. Use these to clean the mattress:


• A soft cloth soaked with warm water and a facility-approved general
cleaning soap/detergent solution. Make sure the cloth is not so wet as to
cause the cleaning solution to pool on the mattress components.
• A soft brush to remove stains and resistant soil. Do not use harsh or
abrasive cleansers, solvents, or scouring pads.

2. Inspect the top cover for cuts, tears and needle sticks. If any are present,
replace or repair as needed.

3. Disconnect the air hoses as follows:.


a. For TotalCare® Bed Systems and
TotalCare® Duo® 2 Bed systems, raise
the head of the mattress.
b. Disconnect the air hoses and any
electrical wires present.

NOTE:
Some TotalCare® Bed Systems have individual
hose connections and some have a single connector
with multiple hose connections on it.

4. Wipe the top cover with the facility approved


cleaner.

5. Let the mattress dry.

6. Fold the mattress toward the foot


end of the bed, and wipe the bottom
cover and sleep deck with the
facility approved cleaner.

7. Let the mattress dry, then fold it


toward the head end of the bed, and
wipe the bottom cover and sleep 2
deck with the facility approved
cleaner.

8. Let the mattress dry.

9. Unfold the mattress.

10. Unzip the top cover.

11. Fold back the top cover to inspect


the inside of the cover.

12. If there are stains or water marks, clean

Disinfect
Repeat the cleaning instructions while you use the facility approved disinfectant.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use of the disinfectant. After you
disinfect the surface, rinse the surface with clean water to remove all disinfectant
residue.

Low Air Loss Coverlets

CAUTION:
Do not steam clean the coverlet. Equipment damage could occur.

Wipe Down 2
1. Make sure the bed is unplugged.

2. Remove the sleep surface from the bed.

3. Inspect the coverlet for cuts, tears and


needle sticks. If any are present,
replace as needed.

4. Wipe down the surface with mild


detergent and warm water followed by
an approved intermediate level
disinfectant.

5. Let the disinfectant remain in contact


with the surface as instructed in the manufacturer’s instructions.

6. Remove the disinfectant, and rinse with warm water.

7. Let the mattress and/or coverlet completely air dry.

8. Install the sleep surface on the bed.

Machine Wash
1. Remove the coverlet.

2. Inspect the coverlet for cuts, tears, and needle sticks. If any are present, replace
as needed.

3. Machine-wash the coverlet with detergent and an effective intermediate level


disinfectant. (For customers in the US, the disinfectant should be registered
with the Environmental Protection Agency.)
• Use the disinfectant as instructed in the manufacturer’s instructions.
• During the wash cycle, soak the coverlet in the disinfectant.
• Let the coverlet rinse thoroughly in clean water.

Do not exceed 150° F (66° C) to dry the coverlet. High temperatures could
destroy the coating that makes the coverlet waterproof yet breathable.

4. Use the lowest dryer setting to dry the coverlet, do not exceed 150° F 
(66° C). Do not use high temperatures.

5. Put the coverlet on the mattress.

1. Use these to clean the mattress:


• A soft cloth soaked with warm water and a facility-approved general
cleaning soap/detergent solution. Make sure the cloth is not so wet as to
cause the cleaning solution to pool on the mattress components.
• A soft brush to remove stains and resistant soil. Do not use harsh or
abrasive cleansers, solvents, or scouring pads.

2. Inspect the top cover for cuts, tears, and needle sticks. If any are present,
replace or repair as needed.

3. Wipe the top cover with the facility approved cleaner.

4. Let the mattress dry.

5. Fold the mattress toward the foot


end of the bed, and wipe the bottom
cover and sleep deck with the
facility approved cleaner.

6. Let the mattress dry, then fold it


toward the head end of the bed, and
wipe the bottom cover and sleep
deck with the facility approved
cleaner.

7. Let the mattress dry.

8. Unfold the mattress.

9. Unzip the top cover.

10. Fold back the top cover to inspect


the inside of the cover.

11. If there are stains or water marks, clean


the inside of the mattress as follows,
otherwise go to step h:

Do the steps below for both the foot section mattress and the main mattress.

1. Use these to clean the mattress:


• A soft cloth soaked with warm water and a facility-approved general
cleaning soap/detergent solution. Make sure the cloth is not so wet as to
cause the cleaning solution to pool on the mattress components.
• A soft brush to remove stains and resistant soil. Do not use harsh or
abrasive cleansers, solvents, or scouring pads.

2. Inspect the slip cover for cuts, tears and needle sticks. If any are present,
replace or repair as needed.

3. Disconnect the air hose on each side of the


bed, under the sleep deck.

4. Wipe the slip cover with the facility


approved cleaner.

5. Let the slip cover dry.

6. Raise one side of the mattress and clean the


sleep deck.

7. Let the sleep deck dry.

8. Turn the mattress over so the clean cover is on the sleep deck, and wipe the
bottom of the mattress with the facility approved cleaner.

9. Let the mattress dry, then turn it over.

10. Open the end of the slip cover. If there is


fluid, staining, or foul odor, do as follows,
otherwise go to step 11:
a. Remove the slip cover.
b. Unzip the cover on the mattress.
c. If the foam is stained, wet, damaged, or
has a foul odor, replace the mattress.
d. If the foam is not stained, wet,
damaged or has a foul odor, close the
cover.
e. Clean the cover as shown above.
f. Install the slip cover.

11. Close the slip cover.

12. Put the mattress in a clean location or on the bed.

13. If you put the mattress on the bed, connect


the air hoses on each side of the bed, under
the sleep deck.

Disinfect
Repeat the cleaning instructions while you use the facility approved disinfectant.
Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for proper use of the disinfectant. After you
disinfect the surface, rinse the surface with clean water to remove all disinfectant
residue.
