Chemistry Practice Controlled Assessment

Equipment:

 Nitric acid
 Calcium carbonate
 Water
 Stopwatch
 Spatula
 Flask

Variables:
Independent Variable: Concentration of nitric acid

Dependent Variable: Time for reaction to stop

Control Variables: Amount of calcium carbonate, stopwatch, flask, spatula,

stopwatch controller, volume of solution

Method:
1. Put 50ml of nitric acid in a flask at a concentration of 2M. Add a spatula of calcium
carbonate and time how long it takes for the bubbling reaction to stop.
2. Add 50ml water to the nitric acid. This is at a concentration of 1M. Add a spatula of
calcium carbonate and time how long it takes for the bubbling reaction to stop..,
3. Repeat the experiment after adding a further 100ml of water.
4. Repeat the experiment after adding a further 200ml of water.

Risk Assessment:
 Nitric acid is corrosive. We need to wear goggles and make sure we wash our hands
if we come into contact with it.
 Flask could break so if that happens we need to get out of the way and clear it up.
 The calcium carbonate should generally be kept away from contact.
