Equipment:
Nitric acid
Calcium carbonate
Water
Stopwatch
Spatula
Flask
Variables:
Independent Variable: Concentration of nitric acid
Method:
1. Put 50ml of nitric acid in a flask at a concentration of 2M. Add a spatula of calcium
carbonate and time how long it takes for the bubbling reaction to stop.
2. Add 50ml water to the nitric acid. This is at a concentration of 1M. Add a spatula of
calcium carbonate and time how long it takes for the bubbling reaction to stop..,
3. Repeat the experiment after adding a further 100ml of water.
4. Repeat the experiment after adding a further 200ml of water.
Risk Assessment:
Nitric acid is corrosive. We need to wear goggles and make sure we wash our hands
if we come into contact with it.
Flask could break so if that happens we need to get out of the way and clear it up.
The calcium carbonate should generally be kept away from contact.
