5G RAN
High Speed Mobility Feature Parameter Description 3 Overview

3 Overview

In fast-moving scenarios such as high-speed railways and maglev trains, UEs

moving at high speeds are easily affected by Doppler shifts and frequent
handovers. As a result, problems such as high service drop rates, difficult access,
and low throughput may occur.

In high speed mobility scenarios, the received signal frequency at the receiver
changes due to the Doppler effect. As a result, the transmitted and received
frequencies are different. This phenomenon is referred to as the Doppler shift.
Figure 3-1 and Table 3-1 describe the uplink and downlink frequency offsets
when a UE is moving relative to a gNodeB.

Figure 3-1 Doppler shifts

5G RAN
High Speed Mobility Feature Parameter Description 3 Overview

A Doppler shift is calculated using the following formula: fd = f0/C x v x cosθ

C is the electromagnetic wave propagation speed, v is the moving speed of the UE,
and θ is the angle between the direction in which the UE is moving relative to the
gNodeB and the direction in which the gNodeB transmits signals.
As the preceding formula indicates, Doppler shifts increase as the moving speed of
a UE relative to the gNodeB increases. A Doppler shift alters the received
frequency, which causes intra- and inter-OFDM symbol interference. In severe
cases, receivers fail to demodulate data from transmitters and UEs cannot access
the network. Therefore, in high speed mobility scenarios, Doppler shifts must be
corrected to reduce their impacts and meet performance requirements. To this
end, Huawei introduces the High-speed Railway Superior Experience feature.
It is recommended that the hyper cell networking be used to solve the problem
caused by frequent UE handovers. For details, see Hyper Cell.

4 High-speed Railway Superior Experience

4.1 Principles
The NR system is sensitive to Doppler shifts due to closely-spaced subcarriers.
Therefore, the effect of Doppler shifts needs to be controlled more. In high-speed
railway scenarios, if the UE speed ranges from 120 km/h to 450 km/h, it is good
practice to configure the serving cell as a high-speed cell.
A cell can be configured as a high-speed cell using the NRDUCell.HighSpeedFlag
parameter. Table 4-1 describes suggestions for configuring high-speed and low-
speed cells.

Table 4-1 Suggestions for configuring high-speed and low-speed cells

Cell Type Recommended Configuration Scenario

High- High-speed railway scenarios where the UE speed ranges from 120
speed cell km/h to 450 km/h

Low- Scenarios where the UE speed is lower than 120 km/h (for example,
speed cell along highways or within tunnels)

After a cell is configured as a high-speed cell, the gNodeB enables uplink

frequency correction in the cell. The gNodeB estimates frequency shifts based on
the PUSCH demodulation reference signal (DMRS) from the UEs and uses the
results as continuous input for UE frequency correction. A high-speed cell must be
configured with one uplink front-loaded DMRS symbol and two uplink additional
DMRS symbols (with NRDUCellPusch.UlAdditionalDmrsPos set to POS2).
The effect of frequency shifts on signals is represented as the phase rotation of
the signals in the time domain. In the uplink, the gNodeB uses pairs of DMRS
symbols for frequency shift estimation. The fundamental principle involves
calculating the frequency shift fd that corresponds to the phase rotation of two
adjacent DMRS symbols in a subframe by using the phase difference between the
two DMRS symbols. The obtained frequency shift fd is used as a continuous input
for correcting the transmitted frequency at the UE, so as to reduce the impact of

Doppler shifts as much as possible and meet the performance requirement of high
speed mobility.

4.2 Network Analysis

4.2.1 Benefits
In most cases, when a UE moves at a speed higher than 200 km/h, there is a high
probability that the UE will be incapable of performing services due to the Doppler
shift impact. As a result, performance issues such as difficult network access, slow
loading web pages, and low throughput occur. After High-speed Railway Superior
Experience is enabled, UEs that move at speeds of up to 450 km/h can perform
services normally. This feature also increases the throughput of UEs that move at
speeds above 120 km/h.

4.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
● When a cell is configured as a high-speed cell, using two additional DMRS
symbols is required in the uplink (with
NRDUCellPusch.UlAdditionalDmrsPos set to POS2). This increases the
uplink pilot resource overhead of the cell by 4–8%.
● UEs in high-speed cells cannot use discontinuous reception (DRX). UEs in
high-speed cells consume more power than those in low-speed cells.
● In high-speed cells, the PRACH preamble format C2 is used. Therefore, fewer
uplink RBs are available and a lower uplink peak throughput than that in low-
speed cells can be achieved.
● The traffic volume of low-speed UEs in high-speed cells is lower (less than
5%) than that in low-speed cells.
● After a low-speed cell is changed to a high-speed cell, the cell is automatically
reset. The cell is unavailable during the reset process, which affects UE
services.

4.3.3 Hardware

Base Station Models

3900 and 5900 series base stations. 3900 series base stations must be configured
with the BBU3910.

Boards
All NR-capable main control boards and NR TDD-capable baseband processing
units support this function. To learn which main control boards are NR-capable
and baseband processing units are NR TDD-capable, see the related BBU technical
specifications in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Product Documentation.

RF Modules
Only NR TDD low-frequency RF modules with the number of RF channels being
1T1R, 2T2R, 4T4R, or 8T8R support this feature.

4.3.4 Networking
To prevent frequent handovers in high speed mobility scenarios, hyper cell
networking is recommended for high-speed cells. In hyper cell networking
scenarios, it is recommended that the NRDUCellTrp.NrDuCellTrpId values of six
physically adjacent transmission reception points (TRPs) along high-speed railways
be planned in ascending order based on their TRP-ID-mod-6 results. This prevents
performance problems such as service drops and UE throughput decrease caused
by TRS interference between TRPs. For details about Hyper Cell, see Hyper Cell.

For example, as shown in Figure 4-1, the NRDUCellTrp.NrDuCellTrpId values of

the six TRPs are planned as 15 (mod 6 = 3), 16 (mod 6 = 4), 17 (mod 6 = 5), 18
(mod 6 = 0), 19 (mod 6 = 1), and 20 (mod 6 = 2).

Figure 4-1 Planning the TRP IDs of NR DU cells

To ensure user experience, it is recommended that network planning and

optimization be performed to guarantee that the SRS signal to interference plus
noise ratio (SINR) of UEs is greater than –5 dB in high-speed railway networking
scenarios. The SRS SINR of a UE can be analyzed based on the
PERIOD_PRIVATE_UE_MEASUREMENT event in the call history record (CHR).

Uplink Time NRDUCellUlTaCo New high-speed cells: The gNodeB

Alignment Timer nfig.UlTimeAlign automatically sets this parameter to
mentTimer the default value 1280SF for high-
speed cells.
Cells that changed from low to high
speed: Setting this parameter manually
is required. Value 1280SF is
recommended.

Table 4-3 Parameters used for optimization

Parameter Parameter ID Setting Notes

Name

SRS Period NRDUCellSrs.SrsP High-speed cells do not support SRS

eriod period adaptation. Therefore, the SRS
period has an immediate impact on the
maximum number of UEs supported by
the gNodeB. Set
NRDUCellSrs.SrsPeriod based on its
recommended values for different load
scenarios.

TRS Period NRDUCellCsirs.Trs System performance can be improved

Period by adjusting this parameter.
Retain the default value.
In hyper cell networking, if the TRS
period is set to MS10, the TRS
interference between TRPs may
increase, affecting the UE access
success rate and traffic volume.
Therefore, setting this parameter to
MS10 in this scenario is not
recommended.

4.4.1.3 Using the MAE-Deployment

For detailed operations, see Feature Configuration Using the MAE-Deployment.

4.4.2 Activation Verification

Step 1 Run the LST NRDUCELL command and check the value of High Speed Flag in the
command output. Run the DSP NRCELL command and check the value of Cell
Available State in the command output.
If the value of High Speed Flag is High Speed Cell and the value of Cell
Available State is Available, the high-speed cell has been successfully set up.
Step 2 Verify cell functions.

4.4.3 Network Monitoring

When UEs are moving at high speeds, frequency offset control increases the cell
uplink modulation and coding scheme (MCS) index, uplink traffic volume, and
KPIs RRC Setup Success Rate (CU) and Intra-RAT Handover In Success Rate
(CU).
The uplink traffic volume and MCS index can be observed using the following
counters.
