1 Change History
This document only provides guidance for feature activation. Feature deployment and
feature gains depend on the specifics of the network scenario where the feature is
deployed. To achieve the desired gains, contact Huawei professional service engineers.
Software Interfaces
Any parameters, alarms, counters, or managed objects (MOs) described in Feature
Parameter Description documents apply only to the corresponding software
release. For future software releases, refer to the corresponding updated product
documentation.
Trial Features
Trial features are features that are not yet ready for full commercial release for
certain reasons. For example, the industry chain (terminals/CN) may not be
sufficiently compatible. However, these features can still be used for testing
purposes or commercial network trials. Anyone who desires to use the trial
features shall contact Huawei and enter into a memorandum of understanding
(MoU) with Huawei prior to an official application of such trial features. Trial
features are not for sale in the current version but customers may try them for
free.
Customers acknowledge and undertake that trial features may have a certain
degree of risk due to absence of commercial testing. Before using them, customers
shall fully understand not only the expected benefits of such trial features but also
the possible impact they may exert on the network. In addition, customers
acknowledge and undertake that since trial features are free, Huawei is not liable
for any trial feature malfunctions or any losses incurred by using the trial features.
Huawei does not promise that problems with trial features will be resolved in the
current version. Huawei reserves the rights to convert trial features into
commercial features in later R/C versions. If trial features are converted into
commercial features in a later version, customers shall pay a licensing fee to
obtain the relevant licenses prior to using the said commercial features. If a
customer fails to purchase such a license, the trial feature(s) will be invalidated
automatically when the product is upgraded.
3 Overview
In high speed mobility scenarios, the received signal frequency at the receiver
changes due to the Doppler effect. As a result, the transmitted and received
frequencies are different. This phenomenon is referred to as the Doppler shift.
Figure 3-1 and Table 3-1 describe the uplink and downlink frequency offsets
when a UE is moving relative to a gNodeB.
UE moving f0 – fd f0 – 2fd
away from the
gNodeB
UE moving f0 + fd f0 + 2fd
towards the
gNodeB
C is the electromagnetic wave propagation speed, v is the moving speed of the UE,
and θ is the angle between the direction in which the UE is moving relative to the
gNodeB and the direction in which the gNodeB transmits signals.
As the preceding formula indicates, Doppler shifts increase as the moving speed of
a UE relative to the gNodeB increases. A Doppler shift alters the received
frequency, which causes intra- and inter-OFDM symbol interference. In severe
cases, receivers fail to demodulate data from transmitters and UEs cannot access
the network. Therefore, in high speed mobility scenarios, Doppler shifts must be
corrected to reduce their impacts and meet performance requirements. To this
end, Huawei introduces the High-speed Railway Superior Experience feature.
It is recommended that the hyper cell networking be used to solve the problem
caused by frequent UE handovers. For details, see Hyper Cell.
4.1 Principles
The NR system is sensitive to Doppler shifts due to closely-spaced subcarriers.
Therefore, the effect of Doppler shifts needs to be controlled more. In high-speed
railway scenarios, if the UE speed ranges from 120 km/h to 450 km/h, it is good
practice to configure the serving cell as a high-speed cell.
A cell can be configured as a high-speed cell using the NRDUCell.HighSpeedFlag
parameter. Table 4-1 describes suggestions for configuring high-speed and low-
speed cells.
High- High-speed railway scenarios where the UE speed ranges from 120
speed cell km/h to 450 km/h
Low- Scenarios where the UE speed is lower than 120 km/h (for example,
speed cell along highways or within tunnels)
Doppler shifts as much as possible and meet the performance requirement of high
speed mobility.
4.2.1 Benefits
In most cases, when a UE moves at a speed higher than 200 km/h, there is a high
probability that the UE will be incapable of performing services due to the Doppler
shift impact. As a result, performance issues such as difficult network access, slow
loading web pages, and low throughput occur. After High-speed Railway Superior
Experience is enabled, UEs that move at speeds of up to 450 km/h can perform
services normally. This feature also increases the throughput of UEs that move at
speeds above 120 km/h.
4.2.2 Impacts
Network Impacts
● When a cell is configured as a high-speed cell, using two additional DMRS
symbols is required in the uplink (with
NRDUCellPusch.UlAdditionalDmrsPos set to POS2). This increases the
uplink pilot resource overhead of the cell by 4–8%.
● UEs in high-speed cells cannot use discontinuous reception (DRX). UEs in
high-speed cells consume more power than those in low-speed cells.
● In high-speed cells, the PRACH preamble format C2 is used. Therefore, fewer
uplink RBs are available and a lower uplink peak throughput than that in low-
speed cells can be achieved.
● The traffic volume of low-speed UEs in high-speed cells is lower (less than
5%) than that in low-speed cells.
● After a low-speed cell is changed to a high-speed cell, the cell is automatically
reset. The cell is unavailable during the reset process, which affects UE
services.

4.3.3 Hardware
Boards
All NR-capable main control boards and NR TDD-capable baseband processing
units support this function. To learn which main control boards are NR-capable
and baseband processing units are NR TDD-capable, see the related BBU technical
specifications in 3900 & 5900 Series Base Station Product Documentation.
RF Modules
Only NR TDD low-frequency RF modules with the number of RF channels being
1T1R, 2T2R, 4T4R, or 8T8R support this feature.
4.3.4 Networking
To prevent frequent handovers in high speed mobility scenarios, hyper cell
networking is recommended for high-speed cells. In hyper cell networking
scenarios, it is recommended that the NRDUCellTrp.NrDuCellTrpId values of six
physically adjacent transmission reception points (TRPs) along high-speed railways
be planned in ascending order based on their TRP-ID-mod-6 results. This prevents
performance problems such as service drops and UE throughput decrease caused
by TRS interference between TRPs. For details about Hyper Cell, see Hyper Cell.
4.3.5 Others
The UE must support two uplink additional DMRS symbols and the PRACH
preamble format C2. Otherwise, the UE cannot access a high-speed cell.
If a UE can access the high-speed cell, the high-speed cell is working properly, that
is, the High-speed Railway Superior Experience feature has taken effect.
