History of Kolhapur

Kolhapur has a history of more then 2000years.The name “kolhapur”has

geographical evidence.”Kolhaj”means bank of river and “pur” or “oor” in
kannada called a small town,so a small town on the river bank of panchganga
i.e.kolhapur. It is also called as “GATE-WAY OF KONKAN”.It is called as
“dakshin kashi” for famous Mahalaxmi temple. It was also kingdom of Maratha
rulers,called as “kolhapur state”.

The historical growth took place mainly during following five periods up to
independence kolhapur state merged into Indian territory in year 1949 and it
forms a major town and district head quarters of western maharastra.

Traffic and transportation
The NH4 between pune to
bangalore passes at east side of the city.This
is the major linkage to the other urban centers
like pune,mumbai,goa,belgaum,and bangalore
etc.The road network within the city mainly
consists of 2 major east-west arteries going
throughout the city connecting the NH4.
There are other state highways linking the
city with the surroundings urban and rural
centers.
kolhapur-sangli-solapur ,kolhapur-ratnagiri,
kolhapur-gargoti etc.
The rail line is another major mode of
transport leading up to Miraj-junction and
then to north and south major cities.
