Kolhapur is a district place and is located south-west end of maharastra. It is a prominent


and historic town, administrative headquarter of western maharastra.states .

History of Kolhapur

Kolhapur has a history of more then 2000years.The name “kolhapur”has


geographical evidence.”Kolhaj”means bank of river and “pur” or “oor” in
kannada called a small town,so a small town on the river bank of panchganga
i.e.kolhapur. It is also called as “GATE-WAY OF KONKAN”.It is called as
“dakshin kashi” for famous Mahalaxmi temple. It was also kingdom of Maratha
rulers,called as “kolhapur state”.

The historical growth took place mainly during following five periods up to
independence kolhapur state merged into Indian territory in year 1949 and it
forms a major town and district head quarters of western maharastra.
