Contagion is a 2011 American disaster thriller film directed by Steven Soderbergh. The Film is
directed by Marion Cotillard, Bryan Cranston, Matt Damon, Laurence Fishburne, Jude Law,
Gwyneth Paltrow, Kate Winslet, and Jennifer Ehle. Contagion storyline documents the spread of
a malicious virus and the efforts of medical researchers and health workers to identify the
disease, and ultimately the introduction of the vaccine to stop its spread.
Soderbergh and screenwriter Scott Z. Burns had collaborated on The Informant! (2009). After
the film's release, Burns attempted to realise his idea of producing a medical thriller that
depicts the rapid spread of a virus, where it was inspired by various pandemic occurring such as
the SARS epidemic in the year 2003 and flu pandemic in 2009. To devise an accurate perception
of a pandemic event, Burns consulted with representatives from the World Health Organization
as well as from several medical experts such as W. Ian Lipkin and Lawrence "Larry" Brilliant. The
filming began in Hong Kong in September 2010, and continued in Chicago, Atlanta, London,
Geneva, and San Francisco until February 2011.
Returning from a Hong Kong business visit, Beth Emhoff arrives to Chicago to meet her former
partner before returning to her family in the Minneapolis region. He seemed to have a cold
temperature during his visit. His six-year-old son from a previous marriage, Clark, was also
contracted and dissolved. Beth's condition worsened and the second two days, she collapsed
with a terrible condition. Her husband, Mitch, takes her to the hospital, but she dies of
unknown causes. Mitch returns home and discovers that Clark also died from the same
infection.
Mirch is placed in isolation but seems immune to the disease. He was freed and returned home
with his teenage daughter Jory, though he did not realize that his daughter inherited his
immunity. He decides to stay with his father, since he lives alone. Mitch struggles to protect his
daughter from the risk of infection, despite realizing that his wife doesn't believe him before his
death. Nevertheless.
In Atlanta, representatives of the Department of Homeland Security met with Dr. Ellis Cheever
of the CDC and expressed concern that the disease is a biological weapons terror attack on the
Thanksgiving weekend. Dr. Cheever invites Dr. Erin Mears, an Epidemic Intelligence Service
official, to Minneapolis to begin the investigation. Mears claimed the U.S. 's propagation to
Emhoff, as well as a deal with local bureaucrats whose crew lacked the intent to respond to the
actual public health. After successfully collecting triage camps in large places, Dr. Mears was
contracted. Evakuasinya delayed, as the airport began to shut down in the anticipated
Karaktina. He later died and was buried in a mass funeral. The more people infected
unconsciously, the social order began to fall apart, with people looting shops and houses. The
US president moved to the underground while emergency services experienced the.
At CDC, Dr. Ally Hextall states that the virus is a mixture of genetic material from pig and bat
viruses. The effort to cure was stunted because scientists could not find a cell culture on the
growth of the newly named Meningoencephalitis Virus One (MEV-1).
The UCSF Professor Dr. Ian Sussman broke an autran from the CDC to destroy the samples, and
on day 12, with over 8 million people infected around the world, identifying the MEV-1 cell
culture used using bat cells. Hextall used the opportunity to start working on the vaccine. Other
scientists have stated that the virus was propagated by a fomites with a basic reproductive
number of four when the virus mutated, projecting that one in twelve people from the world
population would be infected, with a mortality rate of 25-30% .
Conspiracy theorist Alan Krumwiede posts videos about the virus as its popular blog. In one
video, he shows himself ill and then claims that he was cured using a homeopathic cure derived
from Forsythia. In panic, people are looking for forsythia in pharmacies.
Krumwiede's claims gained national attention. In a television interview, he stated that Dr.
Cheever secretly counseled his fiancé to leave Chicago just before the city was quarantined.
Cheever informed that the Government would investigate and seek him out of leaking
information. Later, Krumwiede is known to lie that he contracted in an effort to increase his
profit for the payment of fences he had from drug advice, which he randomly said was
forsythia. Krumwiede was arrested for conspiracies, security counterfeiting, and murder, but
was released when some of his supporters managed to raise funds to provide his collateral.
Using an attenuated virus, Dr. Hextall identifies possible vaccines. To cut down a lengthy test
process, he tried it on himself with an experimental vaccine and visited his father, a doctor who
had suffered MEV-1 after he refused to stop treating the patients during the treatment. Hextall
was not infected with MEV-1 and the vaccine was successful.
At full production level, the vaccine cannot be supplied in the requested bid, so the CDC
vaccinate through the lottery based on the date of birth; It decides the full year time to be
completed. The first recipients, doctors, and other parties that are being forwarded by the
Government are vaccinated based on the lottery. Dr. Cheever gave her quick vaccination to
Roger's son, a CDC employee who heard Dr. Cheever's phone call alerting her boyfriend to leave
Chicago. Meanwhile, Mitch and Jory reunite in the hope that life will return to normal.
On the opening day, Dr. Leonora Orantes, a WHO epidemiologist, came to Hong Kong to visit
Beth Emhoff. He collaborated with Sun Feng and other local epidemiologists and general health
officers; They identified Emhoff as a zero patient, with a security video showing it as a common
contact with the next three known victims in an Macao casino. Before he came home, Feng
kidnapped Orantes to wear it as a hostage to get a dose of the vaccine (prevention) MEV-1 for
his village. For months, Orantes lived with the villagers until the vaccine was announced. Feng
exchanged Orantes with vaccines needed for his village. When the colleague stated that the
similar kidnapping was spread, the dose was Palsebo, Orantes decided again to improve the
villagers, indicating Stockholm syndrome.
On day 26, the number of deaths reaches about 2.5 million in the US, and 26 million worldwide.
The invention, production and initial delivery of the vaccine lasted until day 133, with
vaccinations running until at least the day of the 500. The final death amount is not mentioned.
Dr. Hextall puts a sample of MEV-1 in the Sriogenic storage, along with samples of H1N1 and
SARS.
The source of the virus is unloaded to the audience. A bulldozer (by chance, is operated for a
company where Emhoff works) it uses several forests and disrupts some bats, with one tail
discovering a place of transit and eating in a banana tree. The bat then flies to the pig cage,
dropping a piece of banana from its mouth, which is then eaten by a pig. A chef from the Macao
Casino chooses the pig and is brought to the casino. As he handled processing in the kitchen,
set aside the innards with his hands, he just cleaned his hands when called to find a customer –
Beth Emhoff. The chef shook hands with Beth (Mitch seemed to shake hands on her camera in
the previous scene), transmit a mixture of bat and pig viruses, make the chef a zero patient and
Beth became the second case.
