Background: A procedure qualification test coupon using the same or different P-Number materials and
consisting of two plates of different thicknesses, T2 = 1-1/2” thick and T1 = 1” thick welded with a
single process. The thicknesses meet on the same plane with neither plate being tapered. The joint is
welded in accordance with the sketch below.

Question (2): Does this test coupon qualify the WPS for both base metals for a thickness range of 3/16” to
8” on both sides of the weld joint?

Reply (2): Yes.

Question: According to QW-200.4(a), when a qualified WPS for a combination process is available,
must a new WPS be generated if only one of the processes is to be used in production, provided
all requirements of Section IX for the process used are met?
Reply: No.

The most fundamental of difference between them lies in their


composition. Inconel®, predominantly of nickel-chrome, generally
contains over 50% nickel, whereas Incoloyl®, a nickel-iron-
chromium alloy, has less than 50% nickel content.

What do you do when preparing WPS?

1. Review at least 4 documents


a. Drawing: material specification, thickness of material and weldment + PWHT and impact if
any
b. Code construction
c. Code Welding
d. API 582: this doc give guideline/ recomendation for welding, including preheat, interpass,
recomended consumable.

2. Ask vendor for suitable consumable, include welding parameter, special treatment during welding if
any, storage treatment.
