HEALTH & SAFETY

Hazard Control

Safe Use of Rocla® Products

These general guidelines relate to the safe use of Rocla® products. In all cases, Rocla recommends that risk assessments be undertaken to
ensure compliance with legislative requirements.
Recommendations for control measures
In developing control measures, due regard needs to be given to the effectiveness and ongoing permanence of those measures (hierarchy of
controls). The following strategies for eliminating or minimising risk to health and safety are in descending order of acceptability:
• Elimination of the hazard
• Substitution of the task or material with one that has a lower risk of hazards
• Mitigating the risk by managing the substance or task so that the risk is controlled by a combination of measures
• Providing engineering controls (e.g., ventilation, aids to facilitate lifting)
• Isolating the hazard to prevent people being exposed to it
• Providing administrative controls (such as team lifting), and
• The wearing of personal protective equipment.

Possible hazard:
DUST Controlling Dust

Rocla® products are constructed Control measures usually employed are:

irritation and abrasion injury.

curved, the joint must be fully home before the pipe is aligned.
Rolling Ring Joint
Pipes from 225mm to 1800mm
diameter are supplied with a
simple rolling rubber ring which is
free to roll along the spigot surface
as the joint is made.

Larger diameter pipes utilise a

attempting to make the joint.
Detailed instructions on sliding ring
joints are available from Rocla. Rolling Rubber Ring Guidelines

• Keep rings in a secure, clean environment.

• Keep rings under cover if not being used within 72 hours of delivery.
• Only use rings provided by Rocla for the purchased pipe.
Other types of ring may be too large, making jointing difficult, or too small to effect a seal.
• Do not apply lubricant when using rolling rubber rings.
• Remove any dirt, dust or foreign matter from the spigot and socket before fitting the ring.
• Proper jointing cannot be made in a wet trench. Dewater the trench.
• Begin the joint by ensuring the ring is sitting in the groove on the spigot.
• Align pipes so the ring touches the socket all the way around, then push the pipe home.
Contact Rocla for advice and a demonstration.

Fitting a sliding rubber ring

Only large diameter pipes (1950mm and above) utilise sliding rubber ring joints. Jointing is simple if
the correct technique is applied. Call Rocla for detailed instructions to ensure trouble-free
installation of sliding rubber ring jointed pipes.

The even distribution of the
rectangular profile slots around the
pipe allows for uniform outflow of
water, reducing the possibility of
differential movement of the
surrounding soil from uneven
moisture content.
The ribbed pipe wall configuration
combined with the small
perforations prevents large soil
particles from entering the
pipeline. In sandy or fine soil
conditions geotextile fabric may be
required.
Plastream® slotted pipes can be
used for a variety of applications
including:
• Groundwater control behind
large retaining walls
• Maintenance of high
groundwater levels
• Infiltration and ex-filtration
transfer in WSUD systems
• Drainage of turf in sports arenas
• Collection of leachate in
contaminated sites

Box Culverts

Rocla® Box Culverts Box Culvert Crown Units & Bases

Rocla manufactures a wide range of

reinforced concrete box culverts for
small and large spans. Box culverts
are an ideal alternative to pipes for
limited fill height applications,
precast open channels, underpasses
and ducts for underground services.

designers with the hydraulic design
of concrete pipes and box culverts. Rocla® box culverts are supplied with cast-in SwiftLift anchors of appropriate size. There are
generally four anchors in the crown of the box culvert for handling and installation. Box culverts are
generally lifted and transported in the “legs down” position (“legs-up” for inverts). Some culverts
may be transported “on-edge” and must be turned to the installed position on site. For some large
culverts, bracing may be provided to stabilise the legs during transport and installation. These
braces should remain in position until the box culvert is installed.

Installation
Installation should be in accordance with project-specific drawings and specifications. Where precast
base slabs are used, 75mm of sand or fine granular material should be laid on a stable soil foundation
to provide uniform bedding. Once the base slab has been laid, cement mortar should be applied in
the rebate to ensure continuous and even bedding and to avoid any point loading. Fill material should
be compacted in layers of no more than 150mm, evenly on both sides of the culvert structure. Link
slabs should also be bedded on cement mortar and, if specified, fixed with dowel bars.

The ecoRain® self-cleaning stainless

mosquitoes and rodents.
Rainwater collected from the roof is
passed through a double filter
