PANCHKULA
Context
Panchkula is a planned city and District Headquarter in the Panchkula district, Haryana, India.
The origin of the name Panchkula came from the place where five irrigation canals meet. It
forms a part of an adjoining area to the Chandigarh, Mohali and Zirakpur. It is approximately
4 km (2.4 miles) southeast of Chandigarh, 105 km (65 miles) southwest of Shimla, 44 km (27
miles) from Ambala and 259 km (162 miles) northeast of New Delhi, the national capital. It is a
part of the Chandigarh capital region or Greater Chandigarh. The Chandigarh-Mohali-Panch-
kula metropolitan region collectively forms a Chandigarh Tricity, with a combined population
of over 2 million.

The city is named after Panchkula village that is situated on the Ambala Kalka highway, near
the junction with the Chandigarh road. The city was planned and developed by the state of
Haryana in the 1970s. Panchkula was supposed to be the capital.

Climate

Panchkula district has a sub-tropical continental monsoon climate having, hot summers, cool winters, good monsoon rainfall. It has great variation in
temperature (-1 °C to 43 °C). Sometimes winter frost occurs during December and January. The district also receives winter rains from the western distur-
bance. The rainfall is mostly received in the monsoon
Generally, the slope of the district is from north east to south west and in this direction, most of the rivers/streams rain-fed torrents flow down and
spread much gravel and pebbles in their beds. Only the Sirsa river, in Kalka Tehsil flows towards the north-west. The soils in the district are mainly light
loam.

Zoning
The Panchkula city plan is example of Old Chandigarh Mayers plan and Lecor-
busier sector model.
The Complete Zoning is Majorly divided into Residential zone, Commercial
Zone, Business cum Commercial Civil zone, Administration Zone,
Major Institutes, etc.,
There a canal beside the river which flows inside the Panchkula city through
the Sector 1, Sector 2, Sector 4, Sector 11, Sector 12, Sector 14.

Water Management
Water requirement will be met through Municipal Supply to be arranged by
HUDA. The fresh water has been estimated as 947 KLD. The waste generat-
ed
shall be 723 KLD & shall be treated in STP 910 KLD

Power Requirement& Back-up

The total power requirement of the project will be 14557.87 kVA which will be met by Uttar Haryana Bijli Vitran Nigam. In case of power failure, power back-
up will be provided through DG sets. 2 DG set of 1500 KVA will be located on the basement.

Solid & Hazardous Waste Management


Total 2865 kg/day solid waste will be generated from the project.
The waste management shall be through solid waste management
handling rules.
30 ltrs/month used oil shall be generated and 2 kg/month E-waste will be
generated. The hazardous waste shall be handled as per Hazardous Wastes
(Management/Handling/Transboundry Movement) Rules, 2008, as amend-
ed in 2011 and E-waste shall be handled as per E-Waste (Management &
Handling) Rules, 2011. Battery waste shall be generated from inverters &
UPS which shall be treated as per the Batteries (Management & Handling)
Rules.
