A CONTENT ANALYSIS ON HOW WOMEN OF DIFFERENT PROFESSIONS ARE

PORTRAYED IN BUYBUST, I LOVE YOU HATER AND MY PERFECT YOU

Cinema has been one of the greatest influences in the modern life, and it is also a form
of art, the seventh art along with photography, architecture, literature, play, painting and music.
It is the combination of technology, business, entertainment and aesthetics, each and
everything of these four has an important role in our society today and it is also visible in the
variation of its forms, film is technology, movie is business and entertainment, and cinema is the
aesthetics (Mahmood, 2013). Filipinos have been watching movies since the late nineteenth
century (Ethnic Groups Philippines, 2019). According to Ramoran-Malasig (2018), the
Philippines' art house cinema, has been gaining ground in the international scene through film
festivals in the past couple of years. There are so-called ‘indie’ films and ‘independent’ films that
features short films, documentaries, and animations produced by smaller production houses.
Their creation exists outside the confines of commercial moviemaking. Usually, these films give
light to mundane situations and explore the taboo to spark the interest of the viewers.
There will always be specific skills required before being hired in a certain job.
Strengthening a soft skill such as creativity, persuasion, collaboration, adaptability, and time
management is one of the best investments one can make in a career as they never go out of
style and can be used for the rest of a person’s life (Petrone, 2019). Having the skills required
and the willingness to work full time, there became a rapid increase in the number of college-
educated women working from 1970 until 1990 (Jacobs, 2018). However, under the
‘motherhood mandate’, some women are expected to be more family oriented and less
committed to paid work, and thus, less productive than similarly qualified male workers (Russo,
1976; Hays, 1996) as cited in (Gonzalez, Cortina & Rodriguez, 2019).
Significance of the Study

The result of the study benefits the following:

Students. With the results of this study, students can make it as a basis to improve their

understanding on different professions women engage in.

Teachers. The results can serve as a guide for the teachers to educate students on the

different professions women. Teachers will be able to educate students regarding other skills of

women that made them qualified in a certain profession.

Writers and Producers. The results of the study will benefit writers and producers by

giving ideas on how to make their film effective and remarkable to the viewers. The study will
become a guide to writers and producers that are planning to create their own film with women

of different professions as main or supporting characters.

Future Researchers. The results of the study will serve as a basis and guide for future

researchers that are conducting a study regarding different professions of women. It can give

future researchers knowledge about how women from different professions are commonly

characterized in Filipino movies. Furthermore, the study will not just benefit the future

researchers by giving them data about how women are portrayed but how their profession

influence the way other characters view them.

Film Production Companies in the Philippines will benefit by creating concepts for their

upcoming Filipino movies with the study as its guide. Since the study will be highlighting women

of different professions as interesting characters for a movie it will inspire them in filming movies

that are related to this topic as well and it will be their marketing strategy since they chose to

film a movie that viewers prefer to watch these days.

Scope and Delimitation

The study will be focusing on the portrayal of women of different professions in the

Filipino Movies: BuyBust, I Love You Hater and My Perfect You that were released in the

Philippines in the year 2018. The researchers will focus on analysing the female main

characters of the three movies and their chosen profession. Since the researchers will not be

having participants for the study, the researchers will be using previous studies related to

women of different professions, trailers and the movies itself to support their claims and guide

them in analysing the movie. However, what inspired the writers and producers and their own

opinions about women and the professions aligned to them in filming the movies will not be

included since the researchers will only focus on the three movies itself.

Figure 1. The Conceptual Framework of the Study

The conceptual framework represents the researchers’ synthesis of literature on how to

explain a phenomenon and it serves as a map or rudder that will guide the researchers in

knowing the objectives or intent of their study (Regoniel, 2015). Input-Process-Output (I-P-O) is

the format that is being followed by the conceptual framework in the study. The input includes

the materials of the study which are the Filipino movies: Buybust, I Love You Hater and My

Perfect You. Watching the films and also gathering information from previous studies related to

professions of women will be included in the process. The result of the study will be an analysis

on the portrayal of women of different professions in Filipino films specifically, Buybust, I Love

You Hater and My Perfect You.
