LIT110-A12 TOPIC: OEDIPUS AT COLONUS
Questions: Answer as directed.
A. Discussion: You may quote lines from the play to substantiate your
explanation.
1. What has Oedipus learned from his years of begging and wandering in exile? Has
Oedipus changed since the ending of Oedipus the King? What is his character like now?
Is this the same Oedipus as before? How is what Aristotle would call his ethos - his
character - similar or different?
- Oedipus learned from his years of begging and wandering exile is the acceptance of
his fate and humility. Oedipus changes his attitude since the ending of Oedipus the
King, he is now not an arrogant Oedipus like before and accepts his judgment. The
character of Oedipus is that he is now understand things unlike before. There are
still part of him that his emotion cannot be controlled but you can see in the play
that Oedipus learning to control of his attitude and emotion. Oedipus have a big
changed after the Oedipus the King. Ethos is a persuasive speech that the speaker
worthy of credence. Oedipus is not an ethos yet he is a best example of pathos
which evokes pity or sadness.

2. Explain the reaction of Oedipus upon seeing Ismene. What news did she bring and how
does Oedipus react to her news.
- Ismene brings the news that Kreon, her uncle is trying Oedipus to get back at the
Thebes, because Oedipus needed to bury properly or else the city of Thebes will
suffer. Oedipus’ reaction at first is full of anger then he realizes that the god had
something great for him even in all of his suffering.

d. How does the Chorus react at first to the news that someone has trespassed on
the sacred grove?
- ANGRY
e. How does the Chorus react when Oedipus, haggard and blind, reveals himself?
- PITY
f. How does Oedipus shame the Chorus into accepting him?
- HE ADMIT ALL OF HIS CRIMES EVEN HE DID IT UNKNOWINGLY.
