Project Summary
The International Masters in Children’s Literature, Media & Culture (IM CLMC) is a 2y master, delivered by the
University of Glasgow (UoG)- Scotland, the Autonomous University of Barcelona (UAB)- Spain, Aarhus University
(AU)– Denmark, the University of Tilburg (TiU)- Netherlands & the University of Wrocław (UW)- Poland. Students
graduate with a joint or multiple degree, depending on the combination of degree-awarding partners.
Credit-bearing work placements with a relevant organisation in Semester 3 present students with practical
experiences to complement academic studies. There is also a Summer School option offered by the University of
British Columbia (UBC) in Vancouver (Canada). CLMC is unique & profoundly multi-disciplinary, drawing on
literature, education, childhood studies, film & media studies (including digital) & informed by historical & cultural
perspectives. Children & texts are at the core of the programme & the pillars of expertise behind the CLMC
curriculum create a strong platform for an integrated approach that reflects current theory & research as well as
current challenges & controversies. CLMC is articulated around both the analysis of a range of children’s & young
adult texts (e.g. picturebooks, life writing, cross-over texts, fan fiction, multicultural texts, films, digital apps) & the
acquiring of skills involved in working practically with this literature (e.g. translation, writing, reviewing, editing &
developing literacy practices in a wide range of cultural contexts). Semester 1 at UoG introduces issues through
an overview of historical milestones as well as critical theories. In semester 2, students move to AU where they
focus on notions of childhood & on media. The non-credit bearing Summer School reinforces the curriculum’s
commitment to providing further directions for research & practice through a consideration of the book trade &
historical archives. Year 2 looks at transcultural contexts, either as relevant to book promotion, to the global
canon or to film & participatory culture & is spent in either UAB, TiU or UW. Placements also take place during
this time, reinforcing knowledge & experience within spaces where these texts are produced & consumed
(publishing houses, libraries & festivals). Throughout year 1, students prepare a dissertation proposal that
determines the year 2 mobility & supervisor. The programme’s 4th semester allows the student to write a
dissertation at one of the 5 universities, concentrating on a topic of their interest & with the best supervisory
expertise.CLMC welcomes students from a wide variety of backgrounds (sociology, media studies, librarianship,
publishing, journalism) & is relevant to people of all nationalities, especially to those students willing to deepen
their understanding of children’s literature, historical & contemporary childhood culture, children’s media &
literacies & to employ such acquired knowledge in both public & private educational & cultural sectors.
