GE supplies also an interface box which converts the LVDT output signal to a 1-5 V signal

proportional to VSV stroke. On some NP site, however, this interface box is not supplied and
the LVDT signal – position conversion is done on the control panel software.
This LVDT behaves differently from those normally installed on other gas turbine appliances.
The main difference is that this LVDT appears as a 5 wires LVDT, but it has an Excitation Coil,
a Secondary or Output Coil and a Reference Coil.

The recommended excitation to the LVDT is 7 ± 0.7 V, 3900 ±10% Hz sine wave, with a
maximum harmonic distortion of 1%.

The output on the secondary coil follow the formula:

Vout = 0.206 x V exc x Inch

Which, with an excitation of 7Vrms, is equivalent to 0,057 V/mm

The LVDT transfer function looks like the following picture:

Having the Secondary coil a minimum value at half stroke we need to use the reference coil as a
threshold to discriminate on which side of the function we are.
The software is able to convert this two values in an angle position through this piece of logic:

The reference Coil voltage value (ZT96SV1B) is compared to a constant (KVSVLVR_NULL)

and based on its value use the formula or

(ZT96SV1A – KVSVCALA_O) x KVSVCALA_G

(KVSVCALA_O - ZT96SV1A) x KVSVCALA_G
or

(ZT96SV1A + KVSVCALA_O) x KVSVCALA_G

(KVSVCALA_O + ZT96SV1A) x KVSVCALA_G
The values of this constants are:

KVSVLVR_NULL = Voltage Value of LVDT Reference Coil when LVDT Secondary Coil is
at its minimum value.

While the KVSVCALA_O (Offset) and KVSVCALA_G (Gain) can be calculated using a
system with two equation and two variables measuring ZT96SV1A voltage value at a known
VSV angle red on the VSV goniometry.

e.g.:

ZT96SV1B = 0.5 when ZT96SV1A is at minimum value and VSV Angle = 17.5 °
KVSVLVR_NULL = 0.5

ZT96SV1A = 1.6V (Left Side) when VSV Angle = -6.6°

ZT96SV1A = 1.17V (Left Side) when VSV Angle = 0°

ZT96SV1A = 0,07 (Middle Point) when VSV Angle = 17.5°

ZT96SV1A = 1.44V (Right Side) when VSV Angle = +41.15°

Equations for Left Side when ZT96SV1B < KVSVLVR_NULL:

1): (1.6 – KVSVCALA_O) * KVSVCALA_G = -6.6
2): (1.17 – KVSVCALA_O) * KVSVCALA_G = 0

Equations for Right Side when ZT96SV1B > KVSVLVR_NULL:

1): (0.07 + KVSVCALA_O) * KVSVCALA_G = 17.5
2): (1.44 + KVSVCALA_O) * KVSVCALA_G = 41.5

The values of GAIN and OFFSET (KVSVCALA_O and KVSVCALA_G) should be the same,
or very close to be the same) for both side.
