. Subject: Structural assessment of the existing roof floor

Date : 19-09-2019

Dear Mr. Antonios

Upon your request , please find enclosed a thorough structural report assessing the
actual status of the existing roof floor and the amount of additional super imposed
.“----- “--------dead load and live load it can support, pertaining to lot

Respectfully yours

: Scope of work -

The scope of work is to thoroughly check and study the current state of the existing
roof floor and to determine whether this floor can perform safely and correctly under
additional super imposed dead load and live load , or it should be upgraded , plus
.suggested solutions for upgrading this floor to carry the mentioned loads

So to precisely evaluate the current safety and stability of this floor we performed the
: following

: Visual and engineered investigation )1

A thorough on site investigation was performed on roof slab and on columns

carrying it to assess the situation of these elements whether sound or having
cracks, and to select which part of these elements to be physically and
chemically tested.

2) Laboratory test :

Following our request “ ACTS “ conducted a material investigation test on the existing
roof floor and columns carrying it , where coring and steel sampling was done on
. these elements as specified and guided by us

This test included the extraction of 8 concrete cores ( 5 cores from roof slab and 3
cores from columns carrying it ) for compressive strength testing , depth of
carbonation was tested on 3 roof samples.
Additional test also was conducted on the existing roof which include; cover removal
in twelve beams, seven points was done in the top section of the beams and five
points at the bottom section , a small chunk of concrete cover was removed in order
to determine the actual diameter of the steel bars in the selected beams .

. The laboratory test results presented by “ ACTS “ are attached with this report

3) Structural calculation :

We were optimistic in our design about the poured concrete and the used steel
internal factors , so we considered the concrete compressive strength f’c=24
Mpa and the yield steel strength Fy = 420 Mpa , we also considered δb=1.25
instead of δb=1.5
and δs=1 instead of δs=1.15 .

:First phase

A thorough calculation was done to check the actual current design capacity of the
: slab , we concluded the following

In its current state the slab is support a live load equal to 0.15 t/m 2 ,but the concrete
and steel are stressed up to 82.5 % of their allowable service capacity ( compressive
and yield strength ) , knowing that as per the design codes the stress in the concrete
.and steel should not exceed 60 % of their allowable service capacity

. So the safety factor in the existing reinforced concrete slab is very low

: Second phase

A thorough calculation was done to check the design capacity of the slab to support
: car loads i.e a live load equal to 0.3 t/m2 , we concluded the following

Under a live load equal to 0.3 t/m2 , the concrete and steel will be stressed up to 95%
of their allowable service capacity ( compressive and yield strength ) , leaving no
. marge of safety in the existing reinforced concrete slab

:Third phase

A thorough calculation was done to check the design capacity of the slab to support
car loads i.e a live load equal to 0.3 t/m2 in addition to super imposed dead load
: equal to 0.45 t/m2 ( 10 cm screed concrete + tiles ) , we concluded the following

Under the above mentioned loads , the existing slab will be subjected to excessive
deflection that will transform the existing steel from elastic state to plastic state
hence transforming the“ barely ductile slab “ to a “ brittle slab “ which will increase
. its risk of failure

We highly recommend to reinforce the exiting slab to regain its factor of

: safety to a satisfactory number as

. Per the attached “proposal A “ to safely support car loads ( L.L = 0.3 t/m2 ) *

Per the attached drawings “ proposal B “ to safely support a super imposed dead *
. load ( S.I.D.L= 0.45 t/m2 ) and car loads ( L.L = 0.3 t/m2 )
