CL1101 Advanced Structural Mechanics-I [3 0 0 3]

Course Learning Outcome:

After successful completion of the course, student will be able to
 discretize simple structures, identify degrees of freedom and formulate stiffness matrix
 analyse beams, trusses (2D and 3D) and frames (2D and 3D) for joint displacements and member
forces
 develop computer program for matrix analysis of skeletal structures
 utilize softwares for structural analysis
 understand the fundamentals of finite element method

Syllabus:
Review of the basic concepts of structural analysis, Principles of virtual work and virtual forces, matrix
formulation;
Force and Displacement methods for skeletal structures; matrix formulation;
Displacement method for analysing skeletal structures (Beam, 2-D and 3-D Frame and Truss).
Generalized stiffness method
Special problems such as member discontinuities, non-prismatic members, curved members, Symmetry
considerations in structures, Substructuring technique
Computer applications of stiffness method
Introduction to finite element method, derivation of finite element formulations for bar and beam elements

Self Study:
The self study contents will be declared at the commencement of semester. Around 10% of the questions will
be asked from self study contents.
