Effecting A Touch
Effecting A Touch
Description Instructions
- Nominate 3 players as taggers and they will run without a football.
- All other players carry a ball and run randomly in an area evading taggers.
- Taggers call out touch when they effect a touch on a runner.
- The player tagged, must immediately perform a roll-ball (place their ball on the
ground between their
feet and step over it), and become a tagger.
- The tagger scoops the ball up and continues playing as a runner.
- Rotate taggers.
Variations Once tagger scoops the ball up, they immediately pass back to the runner and
continue chasing (they don’t change places with the runner).
Teacher notes Remind students to look up and determine where their opponent is before
scooping the ball off the ground to avoid collision.
Effecting a touch
- Be positioned to one side of the ball carrier to reduce evasion options
- Look at the waist or lower trunk of the ball carrier
- Move towards the ball carrier and slow down slightly
- Touch the ball carrier with a ‘light tap’ and call out either ‘yes’ or ‘touch’
Roll ball
- The player with the ball faces the opposing teams touchdown zone
- The ball is placed on the ground between the feet (preferably the ball is
stationary, although it may roll backwards to a maximum of 1m).
- The player steps over the ball
LEST L: Split class into 2 and have 2 games going at the same time.
E: Dependant on class size, all students to have a ball besides 3 students.
4 cones to mark out each playing area
S: 2x areas set out, 10mx10m.
T: 10-12mins (with variation).

Description - Organise players into groups of 6 (assess on the day, depending on number of
student’s groups will change)
- Set them on diagonal points of the playing area
- A defender can only enter the playing area once the attacker has entered the
area.
- Points are awarded when the attacker runs over a selected line without being
touched.
- An attacker and defender should move out of the playing area quickly once
defender tags attacker or when
attacker passes designated line, this allows for the next students to go.
- Once an attacker has attacked, they join the defending line and vice versa for the
defenders.
Variations Attacker grounds the ball over the touch line after each play even when scored.
- An acting half standing near the attackers can pass the ball to the attacker who
then enters the playing area on
the run.
- Change the size of the playing area.
