Abstract:

This report is based on the District of Sukkur which is a part of Sindh. It focuses on the research

method of how through different methods I have come to the identification of my previous

problem which was the deteriorating conditions of government facilities especially the prison

infrastructure present there. In this report we will be using different anthropological research

methods to come to the identification of the issue and hence provide some potential solutions or

suggestions to overcome these threats to the well-being of society. Found in my previous report,

we can see that the jails were generally overcrowded and in bad shape. From the Bathroom

facilities to the treatment of the wardens where discrimination prevailed especially in the women

and juvenile facilities. Here we will use the research methods of case study and qualitative

research to come to the identification of the matter at hand. Case studies are in-depth

investigations of a single person, group, event or community. Typically, data are gathered from a

variety of sources and by using several different methods where as Qualitative Research is

primarily exploratory research. It is used to gain an understanding of underlying reasons,

opinions, and motivations. It provides insights into the problem or helps to develop ideas or

hypotheses for potential quantitative research.

Sukkur District:

The Sukkur District in Sindh consists of 4 tehsils or taluqas: Rohri, Pano Akil, Saleh Pat, Sukkur

City. Out of these tehsils Sukkur City is known as the urban centre while Pano Aqil is known for

residing one of the biggest military camps of Pakistan, Rohri is said to be the smallest tehsil in

regards to area and population in the Sukkur District, however it gives residence to a critical

railway junction.
It has a population of 1,383,124 people, in an area of 5,165 km there are 11 prisons present in

Sukkur, for women and juvenile inmates. During the rounds of the Human Rights Commission

of Sindh it was found that there was an inherent overcrowding of the prisons mainly due to the

accused awaiting their trails.

It was found that there was improper allocation of resources and barely any proper construction

of infrastructure for the inmates including toilets. In some cases it was found that there was no

toilet to be used at night for the inmates. Furthermore, the buildings where the prisons are located

were old and historic hence they were in terrible shape.

Using Case Study to Study the Conditions of the Inmates and Affects on Their Health:

To understand the problems that our jail systems and the effects our rehabilitation systems that

are in place bring about in the lives of the inmates. We could begin by observing new inmates

and study them for a longer period of time to see the effect of the jail system on their behaviours

and mental health and by the end of their sentence we could notice whether they are incorporated

back into society. What their job prospects are and whether or not they go back to crime. We

could further notice their behavior after they’ve been released which we can compare with their

behavior before they went to prison by way of interviewing the people in their lives about

significant behavior changes they may have noticed. Then by comparing the behaviours from

before and after we can come to the conclusion of whether and how the present rehabilitation and

jail systems are affecting the inmates mental health and their behavior after they’ve been

released.

Using Qualitiative and Interviews Along with Comparative Studies to Find out Ways to

Better the Inhumane Conditions:

Assuming that our case study gives us results that shows us that the rehabilitation and jail system

weren’t doing anything good we can move on to finding out the basic things that we could do for

the betterment of jail system. We could conduct interviews with the inmates of what they think

might equip them better with the tools to deal with being in jail. Further more we could ask them

about how they’re being treated and ask them direct questions about how it affects them and

what they think would be a better alternative to an issue they express. We can further go on to do

a comparative research between our district along with others and then our country as a whole

and then compare it to a country that has a better jail system and rehabilitation system and a

lowering rate of inmates returning back to crime after they’ve been released on account of not

being able to reenter society.
