Can we actually achieve this
goal?

Yes. To end extreme poverty worldwide

in 20 years, economist Jeffrey Sachs
calculated that the total cost per year
would be about $175 billion. This
represents less than one percent
of the combined income of the richest
countries in the world.
1 in 10
person is extremely poor

FACTS & FIGURES

736 million
people still live in extreme
poverty

FOR ALL AT ALL AGES

“Healthy people are

the foundation for
healthy economies.”
For example, if we spent $1 billion
in expanding immunization
coverage against influenza,
pneumonia and other preventable
diseases, we could save 1 million
children’s lives each year.

FACTS & FIGURES

In the past decade, improvements in
health and heath care led to a
24% increase in income
growth in some of the poorest
countries.

400 million
people have no basic
healthcare and 40% lack social
protection

FACTS & FIGURES

15 million
By the end of 2017, 21.7 million people
living with HIV were receiving
antiretroviral therapy. Yet more than 15
million people are still waiting for
treatment.

FACTS & FIGURES

2 seconds
Every 2 seconds someone aged 30 to 70
years dies prematurely from non-
communicable diseases (cardiovascular
disease, chronic respiratory disease,
diabetes or cancer).

ENSURE
INCLUSIVE
AND EQUITABLE QUALITY
EDUCATION AND PROMOTE
LIFELONG LEARNING
OPPORTUNITIES FOR ALL
Are there groups that have a more
difficult access to education?

Yes, women and girls are one of these

groups. About one-third of countries
in the developing regions have not
achieved gender parity in primary
education.

ACHIEVE GENDER
EQUALITY
AND EMPOWER ALL WOMEN
AND GIRLS
Are there any other gender-related
challenges?

Yes. 1 in 3 girls aged 15-19 have

experienced some form of female
genital mutilation/cutting in the 30
countries in Africa and the Middle East,
where the harmful practice is most
common.

ENSURE
AVAILABILITY
AND SUSTAINABLE
MANAGEMENT OF WATER AND
SANITATION FOR ALL
What would it cost to correct the
problem?
A study by the World Bank Group, UNICEF and
the World Health Organization estimates that
extending basic water and sanitation services to
the unserved would cost US$28.4 billion
per year from 2015 to 2030 or 0.10%
of the global product of the 140 countries
included in its study.
2 billion
water stress affects more than 2
billion people, with this figure
projected to increase

FACTS & FIGURES

80%
of wastewater goes into waterways
without adequate treatment

FACTS & FIGURES

70%
the world has lost 70% of its
natural wetlands over the last
century

FACTS & FIGURES

ENSURE ACCESS
TO AFFORDABLE, RELIABLE,
SUSTAINABLE AND MODERN
ENERGY FOR ALL

What can we do to fix these issues?

Countries can accelerate the transition

to an affordable, reliable, and
sustainable energy system by investing
in renewable energy resources, prioritizing
energy efficient practices, and adopting clean
energy technologies and infrastructure.
1 in 7
people still lacks electricity and
most of them live in rural areas of
the developing world

FACTS & FIGURES

60%
energy is the main contributor to
climate change, it produces around
60% of greenhouse gases

FACTS & FIGURES

14%

could reduce building and industry
electricity consumption by 14%

FACTS & FIGURES

PROMOTE
SUSTAINED,
INCLUSIVE AND SUSTAINABLE
ECONOMIC GROWTH, FULL
AND PROTECTIVE
EMPLOYMENT AND DECENT
WORK FOR ALL

Are jobs enough?

Having a job does not guarantee a decent living.

In fact, 8% of employed workers and
their families world-wide lived in extreme
poverty in 2018.
5%
An estimated 172 million people
worldwide were without work in
2018 - an unemployment rate of 5%.

FACTS & FIGURES

1 million
As a result of an expanding labor force,
the number of unemployed is projected to
increase by 1 million every year and
reach 174 million by 2020.

FACTS & FIGURES

85 million
Many more women than men are
underutilized in the labor force—85
million compared to 55 million.

FACTS & FIGURES

BUILD RESILIENT
INFRASTRUCTURE,
PROMOTE INCLUSIVE AND
SUSTAINABLE
INDUSTRIALIZATION AND
FOSTER INNOVATION
Why should I care?

Inclusive and sustainable industrialization,

together with innovation and infra-structure, can
unleash dynamic and competitive
economic forces that generate
employment and income.
2.3 billion
Worldwide, 2.3 billion people lack
access to basic sanitation.

FACTS & FIGURES

90%
More than 4 billion people still do
not have access to the Internet;
90% of them are in the developing
world.

FACTS & FIGURES

30%
In developing countries, barely 30%
of agricultural products undergo
industrial processing, compared to
98% high-income countries.

FACTS & FIGURES

REDUCE
INEQUALITY
WITHIN AND AMONG
COUNTRIES
Can we actually achieve equality for
everyone in this world?

Recent statistics have shown that this is

possible. Between 2010 and 2016, in 60 out of
94 countries with data, the incomes of the
poorest 40% of the population grew
faster than those of the entire
population.
33%
Economic inequality is largely driven by
the unequal ownership of capital. The
global wealth share of the top 1% was
33% in 2016.

FACTS & FIGURES

39%
Under "business as usual", the top 1%
global wealth will reach 39% by 2050.

FACTS & FIGURES

2x
Women spend, on average, twice as
much time on unpaid housework as men.

FACTS & FIGURES

MAKE CITIES
AND HUMAN SETTLEMENTS
INCLUSIVE, SAFE, RESILIENT
AND SUSTAINABLE

What happens if cities are just left to

grow organically?

The cost
of poorly planned
urbanization can be seen in some of
the huge slums, tangled traffic, green-
house gas emissions and sprawling suburbs all
over the world. Slums are a drag on GDP, and
lower life expectancy.
80%
The economic role of cities is significant.
They generate about 80% of the global
GDP.

FACTS & FIGURES

4.2 billion
In 2018, 4.2 billion people, 55% of the
world’s population, lived in cities. By
2050, the urban population is expected to
reach 6.5 billion.

FACTS & FIGURES

3%
Cities occupy just 3% of the Earth’s land
but account for 60%-80% of energy
consumption and at least 70% of carbon
emissions.

FACTS & FIGURES

ENSURE
SUSTAINABLE
CONSUMPTION AND
PRODUCTION PATTERNS
How can I help as a consumer?

There are two main ways to help:

1. Reducing your waste and
2. Being thoughtful about what you buy and
choosing a sustainable option whenever
possible.
1.3 billion
1.3 billion tonnes of food is wasted every
year, while almost 2 billion people go
hungry or undernourished.

FACTS & FIGURES

22%
The food sector accounts for around 22%
of total greenhouse gas emissions,
largely from the conversion of forests
into farmland.

FACTS & FIGURES

$120 billion
If people everywhere switched to energy
efficient light bulbs, the world would save
US$120 billion annually.

FACTS & FIGURES

TAKE URGENT
ACTION
TO COMBAT CLIMATE
CHANGE AND ITS IMPACTS
Can we solve this problem or is it too
late to act?

The world must transform its energy, industry,

transport, food, agriculture and forestry systems
to ensure that we can limit global
temperature rise to well below 2°C,
maybe even 1.5°C.
1/3
Climate pledges under The Paris
Agreement cover only one third of the
emissions reductions needed to keep the
world below 2°C.

FACTS & FIGURES

$26 trillion
Bold climate action could trigger at least
US$26 trillion in economic benefits by
2030.

FACTS & FIGURES

18 million
The energy sector alone will create
around 18 million more jobs by 2030,
focused specifically on sustainable
energy.

FACTS & FIGURES

CONSERVE &
SUSTAINABLY USE
THE OCEANS, SEA AND MARINE
RESOURCES FOR
SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Sounds like a worthwhile thing to
protect. So what’s the problem?

In the absence of mitigation measures, climate

change will increase the cost of damage
to the ocean by an additional US$322
billion per year by 2050.
75%
The ocean covers three quarters of the
Earth’s surface and represents 99% of the
living space on the planet by volume.

FACTS & FIGURES

40%
As much as 40% of the ocean is heavily
affected by pollution, depleted fisheries,
loss of coastal habitats and other human
activities.

FACTS & FIGURES

30%
The ocean absorbs about 30% of carbon
dioxide produced by humans, buffering
the impacts of global warming.

FACTS & FIGURES

3 billion
More than 3 billion people depend on
marine and coastal biodiversity for their
livelihoods.

FACTS & FIGURES

PROTECT, RESTORE
& PROMOTE
SUSTAINABLE USE OF TERRESTRIAL
ECOSYSTEMS, SUSTAINABLE MANAGE
FORESTS, COMBAT DESERTIFICATION
AND HALT AND REVERSE LAND
DEGRADATION AND HALT BIODIVERSITY
LOSS

What would it cost if we don’t correct

the problem?

Insects and other pollen-carriers are estimated

to be worth more than US$200 billion per year
to the global food economy. Three-quarters of
the top-ranking global prescription drugs contain
components derived from plant extracts, which
would be threatened.
80%
Forests are home to more than 80% of all
terrestrial species of animals, plants and
insects.

FACTS & FIGURES

$125 trillion
The value of ecosystems to human
livelihoods and well-being is $US125
trillion per year.

FACTS & FIGURES

60-80%
Mountain regions provide 60-80% of the
Earth's fresh water.

FACTS & FIGURES

PROMOTE
PEACEFUL &
INCLUSIVE
SOCIETIES FOR SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT, PROVIDE ACCESS TO
JUSTICE FOR ALL AND BUILD EFFECTIVE,
ACCOUNTABLE AND INCLUSIVE
INSTITUTIONS AT ALL LEVELS

How does this goal apply to me,

wherever I live?

Crimes that threaten the foundation of peaceful

societies, including homicides, trafficking and
other organized crimes, as well as
discriminatory laws or practices, affect all
countries.
68.5 million
By the end of 2017, 68.5 million people
had been forcibly displaced as a result of
persecution, conflict, violence or human
rights violations.

FACTS & FIGURES

10 million
There are at least 10 million stateless
people who have been denied nationality
and its related rights.

FACTS & FIGURES

1 billion
1 billion people are legally ‘invisible’
because they cannot prove who they are.
This includes an estimated 625 million
children under 14 whose births were
never registered.

MEANS
OF IMPLEMENTATION AND
REVITALIZE THE GLOBAL
PARTNERSHIP FOR SUSTAINABLE
DEVELOPMENT
How much progress have we made?

Support for implementing the SDGs is gaining

momentum, but major challenges remain. A
growing share of the global population has
access to the Internet and a Technology Bank
for Least Developed Countries has been
established, yet the digital divide
persists.
6 countries
In 2016, 6 countries met the international
target to keep official development
assistance at or above 0.7% of gross
national income.

FACTS & FIGURES

$613 billion
In 2017, international remittances totaled
US$613 billion; 76% of it went to
developing countries.
