PHILIPPINES: A VULNERABLE COUNTRY

Earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, typhoons, strom surge, landslides, floods and more
are example of hazards and disasters that for us filipino's, are natural phenomenon
we’ve been facing off, as years goes by these hazards are getting worst in which
affecting the economic growth and development of our economy. In terms of risk factors
, Philippines ranked third among all of the countries with the highest risks worldwide
according to the World Risk Report 2018. Philippines has its tremendous amount of risk
factors of disaster due to its location under pacific ring of fire, pacific ocean ,the
underdevelopment preparation, the destructive act of humans and the combination of
poverty and population putting our country into the one most prone to disasters.
The Philippines laying on the Pacific’s earthquake and volcano Ring of Fire, this
results earthquake and volcanic eruptions striking the Philippines. In addition,
philippines facing a large bodies of water along on the pacific ocean whose 60% of
typhoons in the world are made. On average, 20 typhoons hit the Philippines every year
so The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration
(PAGASA) are listing approximately 25 local names of storms heading up on our
philippine area of responsibility (PAR) each year. One of the most popular and
disastrous typhoon landed on our country typhoon Yolanda that killed over 10,000
people and destroyed Over a trillions worth of properties and damage to various
sectors.
The poor populations of our country especially on the part of coastal regions
which has a poor quality of shelter that is too weak to overcome typhoons and storm
surges are one of the risk factors, the unpreparedness and the thickheaded people that
used to not evacuate early during the typhoon landfall might be a risk factor too,
Resulting to another hazards or causes death . As well as the underdevelopment of
preparation of Government on conducting a risk reduction preparedness, lack of
evacuation centers , lack of information of people about disaster preparedness.
Overflowing rivers, clogged canals, the solid wastes and garbage around the
surroundings are risk factors too. So if all the artificial waterways are clogged due to
this, it causes elevated floods, as well as Deforestation causes landslides or mudslides
baecause the roots of the trees are playing role of holding the land tightly, so if
deforestation occurs, there is a chance of landslides during disaster.
In conclusion, Philippines by its nature is prone to the disasters due to its
location, but aside from it one of risk factors That we must prepare is ourself. We
filipinos must be ready on the disasters and convey philippines into a disciplined, well
prepared, and a safe country.
