I agree with Exley’s ideas about communication that listening is more important than
talking. In many perspectives, an individual should be a good listener than a talker. The biggest
idea of listening more than talking is that it gives one an opportunity to process what they are
hearing, thus instigating formulation of well thought responses. In this regard, when an
individual listens more it eliminates any chances of jumping into conclusions, which may hinder
effective communication (Hybels, 2014). In addition, when an individual listens more, they have
an opportunity to learn more about their counterparts. One is able to process what other
individuals are talking about. An individual will also say what is important and eliminate
I also agree with Exley that it is important to perform an analysis of the audience as it
gives the speaker a better understanding of the audience. For instance, careful listening and prior
analysis of audience may indicate to the speaker that the mood of the audience is bad, and thus
when the time comes for the speaker to talk, s/he will be able to get the best choice of words not
to provoke the feelings of the audience, which may worsen the situation and thus compromising
