Sowing a healthy future

 The first step in growing a productive crop is

sowing quality seed.
 ~30% share of enhanced productivity is due to
the quality seeds and planting material
 ~Farmers still use farm saved seeds
 F1 seeds contributes greatly to increase the
yields, keeping quality and reduce pesticide use
due to disease and pest resistance
Seed Industry in Indian Prospect
 Total vegetable seed market in India is
$ 228.182 million including OP seed ~ $ 158
million

 Hybrid vegetable seed industry is $80 million

(11% of world share)

 Second largest user of tomato hybrids (40t)

after USA

 Largest area under hybrids of cabbage

(60%) and cauliflower (45%) of total area

Initially during 1971, the project

was started with seven main
centres and ten sub-centres making
a total of seventeen centres.

In the V plan three, VI plan two,

VII plan two, VIII plan three and
XI Plan two new centres have
been added while in the VII plan
one centre namely Kovilepatti has
been deleted. NSP (Veg) has
been merged with

Future Prospects

o In future, the demand of high quality

vegetable seed will increase many fold.

o The newly release and notified should be

included in seed chain

BS
Future directions
• Superior quality vegetable seeds should be available in
adequate quantity
• Public and private sector to be encouraged to enhance
production of quality seeds
• Upgrade the quality of farmers’ saved seeds through
interventions such as the Seed Village Scheme which can
facilitate production and timely availability of seed
• Seed Map to identify potential, alternative and non-
traditional areas for seed production of specific crops
• Seed multiplication for building adequate stocks of
certified/quality seeds by providing foundation seed to
farmers.

Cont.. BS
• Conversion from breeder to certified should be
monitored strictly
• Duplication of Channels for Vegetable Seed Supply to
Private Sector to be avoided (through institutional
licensing and allotment through DAC)
• Supply of mini seed kits to farmers for popularizing
newly developed varieties and promoting seed
production
• Increase share of hybrids in total seed produced
• Seed growers should avail Seed Crop Insurance to cover
risk factors involved in seed production.
• Newly release and notified varieties should be included
in the indent.
