2 Overview
2.1 Introduction
The Macro-Micro Multi RRUs in One Cell feature is applicable to a cell where multiple
RRUs serve the cell and have different transmit power. This cell is referred to as a multi-RRU
cell in this document. In such a cell, RRUs are divided into high-power and low-power RRUs.
For details about how to distinguish between them, see 3.2 High- and Low-power RRUs.
By implementing carrier- and channel-specific digital attenuation and desensitization for the
uplink receive channels of low-power RRUs, Macro-Micro Multi RRUs in One Cell achieves
the following:
l Decreases uplink interference between a multi-RRU cell and its neighboring cells
l Enables the RRUs to use the same background noise in a cell
l Improves network performance
In this document, "carrier" refers to a UMTS carrier on an RRU, and "channel" refers to an
uplink receive channel of an RRU.
2.2 Benefits
The feature has the following benefits:
l Reduces the number of cells, decreases inter-cell handovers and interference, and thereby
significantly simplifies network planning and optimization.
l Solves the following problems that may occur in multi-RRU cells:
– High-power RRUs in neighboring cells cause uplink interference on low-power
RRUs in the serving cell. This problem is solved by implementing digital
desensitization on low-power RRUs.
– RRUs in a cell have different background noise, possibly affecting uplink
performance. This problem is solved by implementing digital attenuation on low-
power RRUs.
3 Technical Description
3.1 Introduction
If the Macro-Micro Multi RRUs in One Cell feature is activated for a multi-RRU cell where
the RRUs have different transmit power, the BBU of the NodeB automatically obtains the
actual transmit power, noise factor, and uplink diversity gains of each RRU in the cell, and
distinguishes between high-power and low-power RRUs. The BBU also calculates digital
attenuation and desensitization values for the low-power RRUs, sends the calculated values to
corresponding RRUs, and implements digital attenuation and desensitization on the uplink
receive channels. During this process, the Macro-Micro Multi RRUs in One Cell feature
supports a total of 30 dB for attenuation and desensitization with an accuracy of 0.1 dB.
Therefore, this feature applies to the cells where the maximum downlink power difference
between RRUs reaches 30 dB.
Figure 3-1 illustrates how this feature implements digital attenuation and desensitization on
the uplink receive channels for low-power RRUs.
Figure 3-1 Digital attenuation and desensitization on the uplink receive channels for low-
power RRUs
Low-power RRUs first implement digital attenuation and then digital desensitization on the
uplink receive channels where both of the physical and logical switches are turned on. Digital
attenuation and desensitization are calculated by the uplink interference cancellation
algorithm.
Digital attenuation aims to reduce the RTWP of low-power RRUs with digital desensitization,
thereby unifying the background noise of RRUs for a cell.
Digital desensitization aims to decrease the uplink signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) of low-power
RRUs by increasing their background noise, thereby reducing interference from high-power
RRUs of the neighboring cells.
Step 1 The BBU obtains the following information about each RRU: actual transmit power
(Power_SecEq_i, in dBm), number of valid uplink receive channels (RXNUM_SecEq_i), and
noise factor (NF_SecEq_i).
Step 2 The BBU obtains the RRU's uplink diversity gain (G_ULDiv_SecEq_i) based on the mapping
between the number of valid uplink receive channels and uplink diversity gain. The mapping
is listed in the following table.
Number of Valid Receive Channels Uplink Diversity Gain (dB)
1 0
2 3
Step 3 The BBU calculates the RRU identification factor (F_ identify_SecEq_i) by using the
following formula:
F_ identify_SecEq_i = Power_SecEq_i (dBm) + NF_SecEq_i (dB) - G_ULDiv_SecEq_i (dB)
Step 4 The BBU takes the smallest noise factor of RRUs that have the maximum F_
identify_SecEq_i as the noise factor of high-power RRUs (NF_TopSecEq).
Step 5 If an RRU meets the following conditions, it is considered as a high-power RRU.
----End
Step 1 The BBU obtains the following values for the high-power RRUs:
l Downlink power reference value (Power_TopSecEq_RE): Equals the maximum value of
Power_SecEq_i for all high-power RRUs.
l Noise factor reference value (NF_TopSecEq_RE): Equals the NF_TopSecEq for a high-
power RRU (all high-power RRUs have the same NF_TopSecEq).
l Uplink diversity gain reference value (G_ULDiv_TopSecEq_RE): Equals the maximum
value of G_ULDiv_SecEq_i for all high-power RRUs.
Step 2 The BBU uses the following formulas to calculate the digital attenuation intensity
(Att_LowSecEq_i) and digital desensitization intensity (Intensity_DESENS_LowSecEq) for
each low-power RRU. Both values are measured in dB at an accuracy of 0.1 dB.
Att_LowSecEq_i = (Power_TopSecEq_RE - Power_LowSecEq_i + G_ULDiv_LowSecEq_i -
G_ULDiv_TopSecEq_RE)
Intensity_DESENS_LowSecEq = (Power_TopSecEq_RE - Power_LowSecEq_i +
NF_TopSecEq_RE- NF_LowSecEq_i + G_ULDiv_LowSecEq_i - G_ULDiv_TopSecEq_RE)
Step 3 The BBU issues the digital attenuation and desensitization values to the corresponding low-
power RRU.
----End
l Digital attenuation
The BBU issues Att_LowSecEq_i to the corresponding low-power RRU.
l Digital desensitization
In addition to Intensity_DESENS_LowSecEq, a cell-level desensitization value is also sent to
each low-power RRU if cell-level desensitization is also working.

5 Network Impact
System Capacity
The Macro-Micro Multi RRUs in One Cell feature cancels uplink interference caused by
different RRU power in a cell. Compared with the deployment with only one RRU in one cell,
this feature increases or retains uplink capacity if UEs are unevenly distributed to the RRUs in
a cell.
Uplink capacity gains yielded by this feature for a multi-RRU cell vary depending on the
position, coverage area, power, neighboring cell relationships, and absorbed traffic volume of
each RRU, but the gains cannot be quantified
Compared with the deployment with only one RRU in one cell, this feature decreases the
downlink capacity.
Network Performance
Performance gains yielded by this feature for a multi-RRU cell vary depending on the
position, coverage area, power, neighboring cell relationships, and absorbed traffic volume of
each RRU, but performance gains cannot be quantified.
Compared with the deployment with only one RRU in one cell, activating Macro-Micro Multi
RRUs in One Cell has the following impacts on network performance:
l Network KPIs
– Coverage: Ec/Io in downlink coverage improves due to a decrease in inter-cell
interference. Uplink coverage provided by high-power RRUs improves, and uplink
coverage provided by low-power RRUs may shrink because of desensitization.
– Call drop rate: It remains the same or slightly improves because of decreased inter-
cell interference.
– Access success rate: It remains the same or slightly improves because of decreased
inter-cell interference.
– Handover success rate: It remains the same or slightly improves because of
decreased inter-cell interference.
l Resource usage
– Power resources: The usage of power resources increases given that total RRU
throughput remains the same.
– Channel element (CE) resources: Uplink CE usage remains the same given that
total RRU throughput remains the same.
– Code resources: Code resource usage increases given that total RRU throughput
remains the same.
– Transport resources: Iub resource usage remains the same given that total RRU
throughput remains the same.
l User experience
User experience improves if the capacity is unlimited:
– Uplink user throughput increases or remains the same.
– Downlink user throughput increases.
l Others
Activating this feature sometimes decreases HSUPA throughput for cell edge users that
are served by low-power RRUs because digital desensitization deteriorates the uplink
SIR of low-power RRUs.
6 Engineering Guidelines
l Street coverage
l Shallow coverage for shops
l Small-sized residential areas
l Replacement of repeaters by RRUs with different power
In these formulas, SP refers to a statistical period in minutes. The calculated KPI values
decrease if no user transmits data within an SP. Therefore, it is good practice to measure these
counters during busy hours.
6.3 Planning
None.
6.4 Deployment
6.4.1 Requirements
Hardware
l Only the DBS3900 supports this feature. The WBBPa board does not support this
feature.
l The requirements for RRUs are as follows:
– RRU3824, RRU3826, RRU3828, RRU3829, RRU3926, RRU3928, RRU3929,
RRU3938, and RRU3939 support digital attenuation and desensitization and
therefore can be configured as either high-power or low-power RRUs in a cell.
– Other RRUs do not support digital attenuation or desensitization and therefore can
be configured only as high-power RRUs. If an RRU that does not support digital
attenuation or desensitization is configured as a low-power RRU, the RNC reports
ALM-28206 Local Cell Capability Decline.
l The RRU3821E, RFU, and AAS do not support this feature.
Other features
The feature WRFD-021350 Independent Demodulation of Signals from Multiple RRUs in
One Cell must be activated before this feature is activated.
License
For details about how to activate the license, see License Management Feature Parameter
Description.
If RAN Sharing or MOCN is enabled, the licensed value is allocated among the primary and
secondary operators according to the value of the "License Allocation for Multiple Operators
parameter".
Method 2: some license control items, such as UL CE Num, can be allocated through both the
common group and private groups. In this case, the licensed values specified by the private
group are preferentially used, and the licensed value specified by the common group is used
on a first-come, first-served basis. For the NodeB license allocation among multiple operators,
see License Management Feature Parameter Description.
6.4.3 Precautions
Reconfigure the Macro-Micro Multi RRUs in One Cell feature if parameter reconfigurations
lead to changes in any of the following: number of available RRUs in a cell, actual transmit
power of an RRU, and number of available RX channels on an RRU. Reconfiguring this
feature does not interrupt services. However, adjusting the digital attenuation and
desensitization adversely affects the performance of power control in a similar way that fast
fading does, which may cause call drops.
6.4.4 Activation
Run the ADD ULOCELL command on the NodeB with Macro-Micro Multi-RRUs-Cell
Static Desensitization Switch set to TRUE.
l Network reconfiguration
Run the MOD ULOCELL command on the NodeB with Macro-Micro Multi-RRUs-Cell
Static Desensitization Switch set to TRUE.
NOTE
When configuring the feature on the CME, perform a single configuration first, and then perform a batch
modification if required.
