Panganiban town might have failed to dominate the medal tally in
taekwondo but Payonhon jin Carla Jane Suarez shocked the crowd in her debut games for sending her rivals not just to the floor but even to the hospital.
Suarez put on an explosive performance at Catanduanes State University
auditorium as she unleashed a lethal axe kick to the face that brutally knocked down Bagamanoc’s Clarisse Molina during the lightweight-division gold medal match of the Palarong Panlalawigan 2018. A few seconds after sprawling in pain on the mat, Molina eventually gave up the match due to severe dizziness and difficulty in breathing which later obliged on-site medics to bring her to the nearest hospital. “I am happy that I win the title but at the same time, I am so sorry and worried for what happened to my opponent,” said Suarez, a Senior high school student of Panganiban National High School. Suarez, a first-timer in taekwondo tournament yet emerged as a heavy favorite, displayed power and prowess even in the early stages of the competition in the women’s category. Flooring his adversary twice, 17-year old Suarez toppled Virac bet Lhyca Mae de Luna in the elimination round with a behemoth margin, 10-3. Suarez also showed no mercy to Gigmoto’s Rica Mae Tenorio who was devastated by combos of palm hand strikes and thrust kicks during their semifinal match which eventually led to a convincing knockout win in favor of the novice. “I am just a beginner [in taekwondo] but I will do my best to represent our province in Palarong Bicol. I dedicate this victory to my parents who have never stopped supporting me since the very start,” she said. Meanwhile, the Virac teakwondo team enjoyed the top seat of the general tournament scoreboard , recording an aggregate ___ gold medals , ____ silver medals and _______ bronze medals coming from both poomsae (exhibition) and kiromi (combat) events. Panganiban landed in second place and with a _________ medal count.
