Class 7 – Mathematics Bahria Enclave campus Islamabad Worksheet: Averages & Quartiles

Example: Find Median and quartiles. Also find inter-quartile range (IQR)

There are 11 values altogether (odd number of values). We need to arrange the data first to find median and
quartiles. Below is the data arranged in ascending order:

1 2 3 4 6 7 8 9 10 11 15
Median (Q2): There is only one number in the middle, which is 7

[(11+1)/2 = 6 so 6th number in the list is median, which is 7]

Lower quartile (Q1) and upper quartiles:

We divide the whole data into two equal parts, deleting the middle value because when number of values are odd,
we can’t divide the data into two equal parts exactly.

1 2 3 4 6 X7 8 9 10 11 15

Median of this part is Median of this part is

Lower quartile (Q1) Upper quartile (Q3)

Lower Quartile = 3 Upper quartile = 10

Inter-quartile range (IRQ) = Q3 – Q1 = 10 – 3 = 7

Example 2: When we have even number of values.

First, we need to arrange the data in ascending order

3 4 5 7 7 7 8 9 9 10 11 12
As we have even number of values, we have two numbers in the middle. 12/2 = 6. So 6 th and 7th values are the
middle values which are 7 and 8. So

Median = (7+ 8)/2 = 15/2 = 7.5

Upper and lower Quartiles (Q1 and Q3)

Arranged data is to be divided into two equal parts.

3 4 5 7 7 7 8 9 9 10 11 12

Median of this part is Median of this part is

Lower quartile (Q1) Upper quartile (Q3)

Lower quartile (Q1) = (5+7)/2= 12/2= 6 Upper quartile (Q3) =(9+10)/2= 19/2=9.5

Inter-quartile range (IRQ)= Q3 – Q1 = 9.5 – 6 =3.5
