This is not what I expected: A smash hit!

(A Critique Paper)

This Is Not What I Expected is a romantic comedy film released on April 27, 2017. Directed by
Derek Hui and produced by Peter Chan, starring Zhou Dongyu (Gu Sheng Nan) and Takeshi
Kaneshiro (Lu Jin). Moreover, the movie was adapted from the novel “Finally I Get You”
published on May 01, 2014 written by Lan Bai Se. The Movie claimed event's top best co-
production film award, and the best leading actor trophy also went to the film's male lead,
Japanese-Taiwanese star Takeshi Kaneshiro.
This is a skilful piece of filmmaking. Who would have thought about a girl that is spontaneous,
innocent, and child-like cute personality whose cooking can be artistic and is becoming a more
mature level of acting as she develops a relationship with a stiff, well-dressed man and overly
self-conscious multi-millionaire whose habit of finding flaws in everything a chef cook.
Is this a love in disguise or just a mismatched lovers, which is which?
For a romantic comedy to work like this, you need at least a set of larger than life characters who
can lift up the screen with an overabundance of charm and some finely grilled, abide a bit cheesy
– chemistry. The main actress is very special indeed, she has countless charisma, beauty, talent
and she can draw you in from the beginning to the end. On the other hand, the main actor played
his part with dedication and a bulk of emotions. You could see the playfulness between them
both. Nevertheless, this was not a complete waste of time for me, even though I have to read the
subtitles, they flowed still through their scenes. It was comedic and heart-warming. The music
whether in Chinese or English blended sweet that completely suits the theme.
The two don't realize they have already met when Gu was keying Lu's car in a mistaken attempt
to get back at her friend Xu Zhaodi's (Ming Xi) errant lover. Lu and Gu will continue to bump
into each other, encounters that infuriate both of them and lead to run-ins with the police. From
the cunningly crafted personal tastes, the meals were also then passionately served and eaten,
both of them have collaborated on food-porn dishes depicted with exceptional cinematography
and editing. It is really an equivalent of cinematic comfort food.
I really can’t forget the moment where it was filled with extraordinary vibe, the scene sizzling
griddle that opens the story to a hallucinogenic trip triggered by blowfish toxin. When the both
of them became high as if hit by a drug. This engagingly goofy romantic comedy speaks the
international language of food.
I strongly/highly recommend watching this film because, in a film whose characters are trying to
avoid each other at all costs, This Is Not What I Expected builds to a genuinely satisfying love
story. This is worth seeing, you should not miss this movie. “Their relationship seems to be
plausible that is literally a smash hit on the ground”!
