CC Applications
Ditch Lining
CC can be rapidly unrolled to form a ditch or channel lining. It is significantly quicker, easier and less expensive to install than conventional
concrete ditch lining and requires no specialist plant equipment. CC can be laid at a rate of 200sqm/hr by a 3 man team.
Slope Protection
CC can be used to stabilise and protect slopes as a replacement for shotcrete and steel mesh. It is typically faster to install, lower cost and
requires less specialist plant equipment. CC also helps eliminate the risks associated with shotcrete rebound and debris.
Bund Lining
CC provides a cost-effective alternative to poured or sprayed concrete for lining secondary containment bunds. It acts as an effective weed
barrier, reducing maintenance costs as well as providing additional levels of impermeability and fire protection. Its ability to be installed quickly
reduces time on site, whilst the availability of man-portable rolls allows for installation in areas with reduced access.

Dear Sirs,
CONCRETE CANVAS LTD
COMPARISON OF CONSTRUCTION COSTS
Engineers Incorporated Ltd (EIL) were commissioned by Concrete Canvas Ltd (CCL) to prepare a
comparison of costs for lining a open, trapezoidal ditch 900 x 900 x 900mm, 500m in length.
We have provided a rate build up for each of the options under consideration and these are
appended to this letter report.
The above rates assume that the initial ditch excavation to form the trapezoidal shape is complete
prior to commencement of lining and therefore has been excluded in the costs.
The above rates assume that the site has tarmac access for pouring in-situ concrete, delivery of
sprayed concrete and paving slabs.

Which contractors have previously installed Concrete Canvas in construction projects in the UK?
Contractors include Costain Group, Carillion, Balfour Beatty, Morgan Sindall, Trant, Enterprisemouchel, Morrison Construction, Skanska,
AMCO, Murphy Group, Dyer & Butler, Amey Colas, J Breheny Contractors Ltd and Raymond Brown Ltd among many others.
Which customers have previously specified Concrete Canvas for construction projects in the UK?
Customers include Network Rail, Highways Agency, The Environment Agency, UK Coal, Bear Scotland and numerous county and borough
councils across the UK.
Technical
What fire protection does CC provide?
CC has achieved Euroclass classification B-s1, d0 and has passed the American MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) fire testing for
use in underground mining applications.
In certain applications Concrete Canvas can be used for structural slope stabilisation by combining it with steel mesh and soils nails (see CC
“Installation Guide: Slope Protection” for more details). In this case the project should be designed by a geotechnical engineer using data from
the CC “Data Sheet” document.
Slope stabilisation is where the body of the slope is inherently unstable and is at risk of suffering from deep slip (where a large mass of the slope
collapses). This may be caused by ground-water lubricating the soil or from other factors such as ground vibration. Conventional solutions
include shotcrete, steel mesh and soil nails which are used to stabilise the slope by providing structural reinforcement. CC can substitute for
the shotcrete component of this type of design for many projects but must be included as part of a solution designed by a qualified geotechnical
engineer.
Are there any special precautions to take when laying CC in very hot conditions?
Yes. It is advised to install CC at dusk to avoid evaporation of the hydration water in warm environments. In very hot conditions, it is advised to
re-wet the material at 2 hour intervals for the first 8 hours.
What Health and Safety precautions should I take when handling Concrete Canvas?
General PPE precautions should be taken; face masks, protective clothing and gloves should be worn when handling CC. CC does not contain
measurable amounts of soluble Chromium (VI) and is not classified as an irritant. Consult the CC “MSDS” document for more information.
How does CC compare environmentally with conventional poured concrete ditch lining?
Concrete Canvas typically replaces 100-150mm of poured, sprayed or precast concrete, resulting in material savings of 95%. This directly
results in a reduction on the carbon footprint of construction works.
Has CC been granted EA (Environment Agency) approval for projects within the UK before?
Yes. CC was approved for use by the Environment Agency (EA) Biodiversity team in 2010 for the Church Village Bypass Ditch Lining Project.
Several projects have since been granted approval on a case-by-case basis.
How does CC washout affect the alkalinity of running water courses during installation?
CC has a low wash out rate compared to other cements and a limited alkaline reserve. Unlike most concretes, it is not classified as an irritant
and is less damaging to the environment.
Availability
Are there different colours of CC available?
CC is supplied in its natural colour (mottled grey) as standard. There are a number of options for colouring CC including dying the surface
fabric fibres or applying coloured surface treatments. For example the fibre surface of CC can easily be coloured by painting with a good quality
exterior masonry paint.
Availability (cont.)
Can I order different lengths of material other than the standard bulk or batched lengths?
Yes, bespoke lengths can be supplied subject to a batching surcharge.
Please note: As each customer’s use of our product may be different, information we provide, including without limitation recommendations, test results, samples,
TM care/labelling/processing instructions or marketing advice, is provided in good faith but without warranty and without accepting any responsibility/liability. Each

A ‘snap off’ type disposable blade can be used for cutting CC before it is hydrated or set. When cutting unset CC a
15-20mm allowance should be left from the cut edge due to potential loss of fill. CC can also be cut using a powered
disc-cutter, a self sharpening fabric cutter or hand saw.
Cutting CC using ‘snap off’ disposable blade Cutting CC using powered disc-cutter
Cutting Set CC
Set CC can be cut using the same tools used for cutting conventional concrete, such as disc cutters, angle grinders
or good quality tile cutters. CC sheets can also be water-cut for applications where a high resolution is required such
as for signage or sculptural works.
To Soil
To Rock
Rock Bolts: For use on hard or rocky substrates, the number and
type of rock bolt should be selected based on the pull-out force
requirement. A suitable head design should be selected to prevent
stress concentrations. A minimum head diameter of 15mm is normally
recommended and plates up to 150mm have been used.
To Steel
Hog rings: Ideal for fixing CC to wire mesh, gabion baskets or fencing,
hog-rings are available in a range of sizes and can be applied with a
manual or powered hog-ringer. The hog rings should be applied to
CC prior to hydration.

Overlapped Joint
This joint is suitable for the majority of CC applications and involves overlapping adjacent sheets of CC by a minimum
of 10cm, (see Fig.1.) For erosion control applications, care should be taken to position the overlap in the direction of
water flow (like shingled roof tiles). When jointing cut edges of CC, the material can be folded back on itself to form
a knuckle joint, (see Fig.2,) which covers the cut edge and improves the seal between layers. We would recommend
fixing the overlap with one of the following methods (please note, it is important to hydrate the material under the
overlap before fixing).
TM
Screws
This joint provides a good mechanical bond and is the most common method of jointing 2 layers of CC together.
We recommend using stainless steel screws inserted at 20cm intervals along the overlap. The screws should be
positioned between 2-5cm from the edge of the joint and applied prior to setting but immediately after hydration, (CC
has 1-2 hours working time in a UK climate.) The concrete within CC will then set around the thread of the screws.
For this reason it is important that screws have a fully threaded shank and a minimum length equal to the full
thickness of the joint. Collated screws allow for the use of an auto-feed screwdriver which provides a rapid means
of creating a screwed joint. Suitable collated s/steel screws (see below) are available from Concrete Canvas Ltd.
A sealant can be applied between CC layers prior to screwing to improve joint impermeability. Sealants are typically
applied using a caulking gun. A bead diameter of 6-9mm is recommended with the screws inserted through the
sealant bead where possible to minimise leakage. Suitable sealants from manufacturers such as Sika are available
from Concrete Canvas Ltd.

TM
Adhesive Sealant
For applications where screws are not suitable, such as when applying CC onto a hard concrete substrate or over a
geomembrane, an adhesive sealant may be used. This should be applied between the overlapping layers and may
be applied with a caulking gun or with a brush. Please follow the manufacturer’s instructions for correct application
procedure. Adhesive sealants such as CT1 and Corroplast are available from Concrete Canvas Ltd.
Adhesive sealant applied between overlapping layers of CC Corroplast applied to CC joint using brush
Concrete Grout
This provides a high strength joint with an excellent level of impermeability. A grout joint can be applied using hand
tools or using a concrete spraying machine. The thickness of grout joints should be applied according to the CC
“Grouting Guide”.
Grouted joint applied using hand tool Grout applied using portable concrete spraying equipment
TM
Thermal Welding
This provides a high strength joint with the highest level of impermeability. The joint is formed using a “prayer” joint
and can be formed using hand tools or using an automatic thermal welding machine. The latter allows joints to be
formed at a rate of 6m/ min and the tooling is available to hire from Concrete Canvas Ltd. Please see CC “Thermal
Welding Guide” for more details.
Other
The flexible nature of CC means that it can be jointed, sealed and fixed using a large selection of products available
on the market. The 5 joints listed above are suitable for the majority of applications and summarised in the table at
the end of this document. Some other joints which may be useful are also shown in the images below.

SPRAY THE FIBRE SURFACE WITH WATER UNTIL IT FEELS WET TO TOUCH FOR SEVERAL MINUTES AFTER SPRAYING.
Notes:
- CC cannot be over hydrated and an excess of water is always recommended.
- Minimum ratio of water:CC is 1:2 by weight.
- Do not jet high pressure water directly onto the CC as this may wash a channel in the material.
- CC can be hydrated using saline or non-saline water.
- CC will hydrate and set underwater.
- CC has a working time of 1-2 hours after hydration. Do not move CC once it has begun to set.
- Working time will be reduced in hot climates.
- CC will set hard in 24 hours but will continue to gain strength for years.
- If CC is not fully saturated, the set may be delayed and strength reduced. If the set is delayed, re-wet with a large excess of water.
2) If the surface temperature is expected to fall below 0°C in the 8 hours following hydration then use warm water (>15°C)
mixed with CC accelerant and cover with plastic sheeting. It is important to only use accelerant supplied by Concrete
Canvas Ltd. as some admixtures may delay set or impair performance of CC. Please contact Concrete Canvas Ltd with
your specific temperature profile for a recommendation on the dosage of accelerant required.
3) It is not recommended to install CC if the ground surface temperature is likely to fall below -4°C within 24 hours of
initial hydration.
4) It is not recommended to install CC on frozen ground as the ground may move significantly when it thaws, creating Concrete Canvas Ltd.

The following guide provides useful information for installers, customers and specifiers of CC and provides an
overview of installation techniques for the lining of ditches. The versatile nature of CC means that this document is
not exhaustive and is intended for guidance purposes only.
Here are some key areas questions that you may need to consider before specifying or purchasing CC.
Which thickness?
• CC5 can be used to line ditches with a solid substrate such as when relining an existing concrete channel or
laying over a hard substrate such as rock. CC5 may also be used for temporary works.
• CC8 is the standard thickness specified for ditch lining and is recommended unless either of the conditions above
or below apply.
• CC13 should be considered where a channel is to be trafficked, is exposed to high levels of debris, where water
flow rates are above 8.6m/s or where the ground is particularly steep or unstable.
Which format?
CC is available as large bulk rolls (1.5T to 1.6T) or as smaller man-portable batched rolls (60kg to 70kg). See
the product table below for exact specifications. Installation is fastest using bulk rolls dispensed using a spreader
beam (available for hire/purchase). For sites where heavy lifting equipment is not available or access is limited the
batched, man-portable rolls should be used.

TM
Which layup?
CC can be laid along the length of the ditch (longitudinal) or across the width (transverse). CC13 and CC8 are
supplied in roll widths of 1.1m, CC5 in roll widths of 1.0m. Consideration should be given to the channel profile design
in order to minimise wastage. Some example profiles are given below based on a standard overlap of 10cm between
adjacent layers. Care should be taken to position the overlap in the direction of water flow (like shingled roof tiles).

Laying longitudinally is typically faster than laying transversely. However a transverse layup may be preferable if
either:
• the channel side length is greater than 0.9m • the channel geometry means that longitudinal
which can be difficult to fix using a longitudinal or layup is materially wasteful (see below)
layup (see below)
0.7m
CC can be fixed down along the shoulder of the ditch using pegs or an anchor trench or preferably both. Concrete
Canvas Ltd can provide pegs in lengths of 250mm and 380mm suitable for different ground conditions. Peg spacing
will differ depending on loading and flow conditions. However, for a longitudinal layup pegs are typically spaced every
2m along the shoulders, whilst for a transverse layup pegs are normally applied at every joint (1m spacing).
In addition to pegging, the edge of CC can be buried along the shoulder to prevent undermining from surface water
and this is particularly important for interceptor drains which collect water run-off along their edge. Burying CC also
provides a neat aesthetic transition to the surrounding landscape.
A properly designed anchor trench can be used as a substitute to pegging but would normally only be used on low
flow-rate applications or where pegs are unsuitable due to the location of sensitive underground infrastructure such
as power cables.

TM
CC can be jointed along the overlap by screws, sealants, grout or thermal welding. The vast majority of ditches use
a screwed joint which provides a good mechanical bond and sufficient impermeability for most drainage applications.
We recommend using stainless steel screws inserted at 20cm intervals along the overlap. The screws should be
positioned between 2-5cm from the edge of the joint and applied prior to setting when the CC is still unset. The
concrete within CC will then set around the thread of the screws. Please see the CC “User Guide: Jointing & Fixing”
for a full range of jointing methods available.

In the right conditions CC will naturally ‘green’ over time
with moss and blend in with the environment. However
CC will prevent root growing vegetation and weed growth,
reducing the maintenance costs associated with unlined
ditches.

CC can be easily manipulated to form ditch junctions and terminals CC can be installed around existing infrastructure
A suitable mortar can be used to join and seal CC to existing infrastructure CC can also be used to reline existing concrete water channels

The following guide provides useful information for installers, customers and specifiers of CC as an overview of
installation techniques for protecting slopes with CC. It should be used together with the other relevant guides such
as the “CC Jointing and Fixing” guide. The versatile nature of CC means that this document is not exhaustive and is
intended for guidance purposes only.
Here are some key questions that you may need to consider before specifying or purchasing CC:
CC Slope Protection project, Alcobendas Tunnel Station, Spain CC Slope Stabilisation project, Cloudhill Quarry, UK
This guide focuses on slope protection, although a lot of the same techniques can be applied to slope stabilisation.
TM
Which thickness?
• CC5 is the standard thickness used for slope protection and is suitable for the majority of applications where
surface water flow is from direct rainfall only.
• CC8 should be considered for applications where the slope will be taking additional water run-off, for
example on spillways and outfalls and the flow rate is below 8.6m/s.
• CC13 should be considered where flow rates are above 8.6m/s or where the CC might be prone to
impacts from debris or a high level of abrasion.
Which format?
CC is available as large bulk rolls (1.5 to 1.6T) or as smaller man-portable batched rolls (60 to 70kg). Installation is
fastest using bulk rolls dispensed using a spreader beam (available for hire/purchase). For sites where heavy lifting
equipment is not available or access is limited, the batched man-portable rolls should be used.
CC Type Thickness Roll Width Dry Weight Batched Roll Batched Roll Bulk Roll Bulk Roll
(mm) (mm) (kg/sqm) Coverage (sqm) Length (m) Coverage (sqm) Length (m)
CC5 5 1.0 7 10 10 200 200
CC8 8 1.1 12 5 4.55 125 114
CC13 13 1.1 19 N/A N/A 80 73
Which layup?
Standard practise is to lay CC vertically down the length of the slope (longitudinal) as this provides the fastest method
of installation and allows each roll to be securely fixed at the crest of the slope. If a transverse layup is used, care
should be taken to position the overlap in the direction of water flow (like shingled roof tiles).
CC should be securely fixed at the crest of the slope, Crest fixing using
with additional fixings used down the face for profiling pegs and an
anchor tench
or additional support as required. The following Face profiling
provides examples of suitable fixings for different using pegs
To Soil: CC can be fixed to a soil substrate using pegs, an anchor trench, soil nails or ground anchors. The most
common method of securing CC at the crest is using a combination of pegs and an anchor trench. Peg length and
spacing should be determined based on the pull-out force requirement (eg self weight, water flow etc), however
typical spacing for a longitudinal layup is at every joint along the crest. It is particularly important to prevent water
ingress between the CC and the substrate at the crest as this can lead to undermining. An effective means of sealing
this top edge is by burying the exposed CC in an anchor trench; this also provides a neat aesthetic transition to the
surrounding landscape.
CC fixed at crest of slope with ground pegs and anchor trench Concrete anchor trench constructed over CC at crest of slope
To Concrete: CC can be fixed to a concrete substrate (such as a headwall) using conventional masonry fixings
such as self tapping masonry bolts, wedge anchors and “Hilti” type nails. We recommend a minimum washer/head
diameter of 15mm or a clamping bar for most fixings of this type to prevent pull-through.

TM
To Rock: CC can be secured into rocky substrates using rock bolts, the number and type of fixings should be selected
based on the pull-out force requirement. A suitable head design should be selected to prevent stress concentrations.
A minimum head diameter of 15mm is normally recommended and plates up to 150mm are often used. Large anchor
plates should be circular where possible or have radiused corners to avoid stress concentrations.
Rock bolt and large anchor plate with radiused corners CC fixed to slope using rock bolt
A suitable jointing method should be selected based on the loading and water impermeability requirements of the
project. The standard method of jointing for slope protection is to use a screwed joint which provides a good
mechanical bond and sufficient impermeability for most slope protection applications. We recommend using stainless
steel screws inserted at 20cm intervals along the overlap. The screws should be positioned between 2-5cm from the
edge of the joint and applied prior to setting when the CC is still unset. The concrete within CC will then set around
the thread of the screws. Please see the CC “User Guide: Jointing and Fixing” for a full range of jointing methods.

Jointing adjacent layers of CC using stainless steel screws
If a higher level of impermeability is required (for example on an outfall) then a bead of sealant such as Sikaflex can
be applied in the overlap prior to screwing. If screws are not suitable (for example if laying on a geomembrane) then
an adhesive sealant such as CT1 or Corroplast or a concrete mortar joint may be used.
TM
Installation
1. Ground Preparation
4. Hydrating CC 3
Once positioned, CC should be hydrated by spraying with
water (sea water may be used). Spray the fibre surface
with water until it feels wet to touch for several minutes
after spraying. An excess of water should be used as
CC cannot be over hydrated (minimum ratio of water:CC
is 1:2 by weight). Re-spray the CC again after 1 hour if
installing CC5, installing on steep slopes or installing in
warm climates. It is important to ensure that overlapped
and anchor trenched sections are hydrated. Refer to the
CC “Hydration Guide” for instructions on the correct the
correct hydration procedure. Please note that you should
not rely on natural precipitation to hydrate the material. 4
TM
Installation cont.
5. Jointing CC
6. Setting 5
Once hydrated, CC remains workable for approx 1-2 hours
in a UK climate. In warm climates, working time may be
reduced. CC will harden to 80% of its 28 day strength in 24
hours and is ready for use.

3rd Region of
Atacama, Chile
The Caserones Project is a ditch-lining project located in the 3rd Region of Atacama, 800 kilometres to the north of Santiago,
with the aim of diverting glacial melt water that threatens to flood a nearby copper mine, owned and operated by Minera
Lumina Copper Chile (MLCC). The project was being undertaken in a remote and challenging environment, with the bulk of the
installation over 4,000m above sea level in an area subject to temperatures ranging from -10oC to 20oC.
CC5 was delivered to site in bulk rolls and dispensed using a spreader beam and crane truck. Lengths of 6.4m were
cut on site to allow the CC to be laid across the width of the ditch, then held in place with ground pegs before being buried in
an anchor trench situated at the head of the ditch sides. Adjoining layers of CC were overlapped by 100mm in the direction of
water flow and held together with screws. The CC was hydrated using a sprayer truck, dispensing water that had been mixed
with a CC-approved accelerant to help the material set faster in the cold environment. The hydrated CC was then covered in
plastic sheeting for three days to again protect it from freezing temperatures during setting.
CC’s ease of use meant that two 5-man teams were able to install it at an average rate of 144sqm/hour, without the
need for specialist training, equipment or heavy plant. 53,200sqm of CC5 was installed in total.

- Installed at a rate of
450m/day
In December 2010, ADIF, the Spanish authority responsible for railway infrastructure management, specified Concrete Canvas
(CC) to be used as slope protection for a railway station in Madrid. CC was chosen to address years of erosion and instability
issues affecting the entrance of Alcobendas tunnel station. Erosion of the steep railway slope embankments had caused silting
at the drainage pumps in the tunnel entrance. Shotcrete had been used twice previously but presented several problems with
installation and durability.
2500sqm of CC8 was specified and delivered on site in bulk rolls, which were dispensed from spreader beam equipment and
plant. The CC was fixed at the top of the 12m slope using galvanised steel pegs whilst adjacent CC layers were screwed
together. A shallow surface runoff ditch was formed at the toe of the slope. Train traffic was not affected during the works: the
station was able to remain open during the installation as there was no risk of discharge from material onto the tracks, often a
problem with sprayed concrete techniques.
Installing at a rate of over 450sqm/day, the project was completed in under a week and was 70% quicker to install than if
shotcrete or gunite had been used.

i CC trialled as
an alternative
to shotcrete in
providing surface
erosion protection to
sandstone.
In May 2013, Concrete Canvas (CC) was trialled as an alternative to shotcrete to provide surface erosion protection
to sections of sandstone overburden at a limestone quarry site in Derby, UK. Reinforcing the sandstone overburden
would allow the quarry site to conduct additional excavation and blasting, maximising the potential yield of the site and
helping to ensure its continued operation for an additional 10 years.
CC8 bulk rolls of 125sqm were delivered to site and suspended from spreader beam equipment using a 3.5T
telescopic forklift. The CC was batched to specific lengths to match individual heights from the ground level to the
top of the overburden using a cut-off saw. This ensured that there was no wastage as each length was tailored to
match the rock face exactly. Using a rough terrain cherry picker, each length was then initially hung from the top
onto the rock face using 250mm steel ground pegs, folding the top edge by 50mm to ensure a neat termination
and to reduce the risk of water ingress between the CC and the substrate. Subsequent layers of CC were then
positioned with an overlap of 100mm to the adjacent layer. These overlapped sections were then screwed together
with 30mm stainless screws at 200mm intervals using an auto-fed screwdriver. The CC layer was then secured to
the rock face at 2m intervals along the overlaps and at void points using 100mm long rock bolts with 20mm washers
to ensure intimate contact between the CC and reduce void spaces. Once the CC had been secured, it was then
hydrated using water from a 4000 gallon dust suppression tank. Post set, the CC layer was draped in Geobrugg
Deltax wire mesh and the rock face stabilised using a GEWI thread bar system with load bearing plates and nuts.
Successful blasting of the rock face took place two weeks later with no signs of slope deterioration from either blast
or the period of weathering since installation. Concrete Canvas also proved to be 60% less expensive than the
traditionally used shotcrete option and saved Breedon Aggregates over £14,000. The 335sqm trial installation was
completed in two days using a crew of three.

Slope stabilization
i project. CC was
used to prevent
surface erosion and
degradation which was
causing material to fall
into a nearby road.
In October 2012, Concrete Canvas (CC) was specified as a hard armour surface coating to prevent further weathering erosion
of a roadside embankment in Cundinamarca, Colombia. The slope had degraded to the point that traffic on the nearby road
was at risk from falling rock and debris. Shotcrete or mortar slab had originally been considered for the project, but CC was
chosen due to its speed and ease of installation, homogeneity and consistency compared to shotcrete. It also allowed greater
flexibility in terms of site access, as the installation team were unable to use heavy plant at the crest of the slope.
255sqm of CC5 was delivered on site in bulk rolls which were then cut into 12 linear metre lengths to match the average height
of the slope. The rolled lengths were mounted onto a spreader beam which was towed to the crest of the slope with ropes. The
CC was then fixed securely to the crest with 250x12mm steel ground pegs into the soil substrate before unrolling down the
embankment.
Sikaflex 1A and CT1 adhesive were used to fix the CC to several PVC drainage tubes protruding from the slope, whilst 30mm
screws were used to join adjacent overlapping layers of CC. Hilti expansion anchors were used to fix the CC to the slope in
overhanging sections to avoid voids between the material and the uneven profile. Hydration was via a pump and bowser as
there wasn’t an available nearby water supply.
The installation team were impressed by the speed and ease of installation of CC on a site with heavily restricted access. The
client was pleased with the aesthetic quality of the finished project and how the drape characteristics of CC5 resulted in an
organic, rock-like appearance. A 5-man installation team were able to complete the entire 255sqm installation, including site
preparation, in 8 days without specialist training or plant equipment.

in Spain.
Completed section of slope lined with CC5
In September 2012, Spanish infrastructure group, COMSA EMTE, specified Concrete Canvas (CC) for slope protection works
bordering an electrical substation in La Espluga de Francolí, Spain. The slope profile had been degraded over a number of
years by surface run off from heavy rainfall and general weathering and was in danger of undermining nearby walkways. CC
was chosen over the traditional use of shotcrete, to avoid damage to the surrounding pylons and sensitive infrastructure from
rebound and fallout.
CC5 was supplied in bulk rolls of 200 linear metres which were installed in vertical layers and dispensed from a
crane mounted spreader beam. 250mm x 12mm steel ground pegs were used to secure the CC at the top of the slope into
the soil substrate, whilst anchor bolts were used to fix the CC to concrete drainage ditches both at the crest and toe. The
CC was then hydrated using an on-site water supply. Adjacent CC layers were overlapped by 100mm and screwed together
at approx. 200mm centres. This created a neat and flush joint between layers and helped to train the CC to the profiles and
contours of the slope.
A 3-man team were able to complete the installation to a high standard in just 3 days without the need for shutting
down the facility.

CC was specified over conventional lining solutions such as shotcrete or reinforced concrete due to the cost and time savings
offered as well as additional site specific benefits.
The traverse batters were excavated to a maximum of 30º to the vertical ensuring surface flow was directed into the 600mm wide
spoon drains at the base of the bund. A 50mm sand base course was applied to the traverse prior to the installation of the CC to
allow free drainage. The CC was supplied as 200sqm bulk rolls and installed on site using plant mounted spreader beams. The
material was unrolled into position and fixed into the batters using 500mm soil pins with washers. Each CC layer was anchored
top and toe of the batter by a minimum of 300mm and overlapped 100mm between adjacent sheets. Weep holes were drilled
into the base of the Canvas at 3m centres once the CC had set.

Project Background
In 2012, Concrete Canvas (CC) was specified to line refurbished secondary containment bunds at a Marine
Terminal Facility in the UK. The bunds surrounded a series of tank farms storing hydrocarbons as part of
the larger onshore facility. CC provides hard armour weathering protection of bunds, acts as an effective
weed suppressant, protects against animal damage and provides additional levels of containment and fire
protection. Trant Construction Ltd were the contractor on these works which started refurbishment of the
bunds in October 2012 with a scheduled completion date of July 2013.
Concrete Canvas TM
Concrete Canvas is a concrete impregnated flexible fabric that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable,
fibre reinforced concrete layer. CC is available in 3 different grades, CC5, CC8 and CC13 which are 5mm,
8mm and 13mm thick respectively. All three grades can be used to line bunds according to the level of traffic
expected. CC8 is also used for lining drainage channels in and around oil refineries as a rapidly installed, cost
effective alternative to half cut clay or concrete pipes.

Concrete Canvas TM
CC can be provided in two formats, man portable batched rolls or larger bulk rolls of up to 200 linear metres.
The batched rolls are ideal for areas on site with difficult access and/or where plant equipment isn’t available.
The project required 25’000sqm of CC5 delivered in 200m bulk rolls, called off in staggered deliveries to
match the progress of the installation.
CC Technical Advantages
Concrete Canvas provided the following technical advantages for the bund lining works:
- Erosion Protection
CC provides a hard armour surface protection preventing weathering erosion of the bund. CC is fibre
reinforced and has an abrasion resistance twice that of ordinary Portland cement.
- Rapid Install
CC was installed at rates of 800sqm per day using a 6 man crew.
- Weed Suppression
CC is an effective weed suppressant, reducing future maintenance costs associated with grass cutting of top
soils and negating the risk of fire from dried grasses.
- Conformation to Protrusions
CC was able to conform to 90° turns, pipe protrusions through the bunds and terminations at buttress walls.

Grassed soil bunds prior to refurbishment Grassed soil bunds prior to refurbishment
The 25’000sqm of CC was supplied in called off staggered deliveries to minimise on-site storage of material
and to provide flexibility to the programme of works according to the weather conditions.
Following refurbishment of the clay bunds, bulk rolls of 200sqm of CC5 were dispensed onto the bunds
from a chain hoisted spreader beam mounted from a 13T tracked excavator. Each CC5 bulk roll was
positioned at the crest of the bund, before unrolling the required length down the inside. The bulk roll was
then unrolled down the outside edge before being cut to length using utility knives.
Subsequent layers of CC were positioned to overlap the previous by 100mm. Once each section of bund
had been lined, the CC was hydrated using a fire hose from the nearby water mains. Following hydration,
the overlapped edge was then folded back on itself by approx. 50mm to apply CT1 sealant in a continuous
5mm bead along the length using a 600ml applicator sealant gun. The CC edge was then folded back and
screwed in position using 30mm screws applied with an auto-fed collated screw driver. The sealant created
an impermeable joint whilst the screws provided the mechanical bond between overlapped CC layers. Each
layer was anchor trenched at both inside and outside edges of the bund.
At approx. 24 hours from the point of hydration, the CC had set to 80% strength and was able to be
trafficked as works continued on installing kerb work and drainage details on the inside of the bund.

A trial bund lining project was carried out as part of reinforcement works at the CPF-2 Meta Petroleum Corp. oil field facility in
Colombia.
The trial demonstrated that CC could be installed onsite without the need for heavy plant equipment, which was critical for a site
with limited access and within a hazardous environment. The works were also completed in wet weather conditions which would
have halted traditional concreting works.
Meta Petroleum Corp. were impressed with the simple and rapid installation method of Concrete Canvas as well as its immediate
effectiveness after laying. Topography studies are being completed in preparation for larger CC projects in other areas of the oil
field, including drainage works and more extensive bund lining.

The Monegros Channel is an old concrete canal located in the municipality of Castejón de Monegros in Spain, measuring 133km
long and 40 metres wide. The surrounding area relies on water from the canal for irrigation and other agricultural purposes.
CC5 was used to repair a section of the canal, to resolve water leakage and repair damage caused by erosion, due to its ease
of use, durability, strength and capability as a waterproofing material.
A total of 1000m2 was delivered on site in bulk rolls, and deployed using a crane truck and spreader beam. The installation site
was cleared of debris, and the CC5 was laid transversely across the width of the channel. Waterproof seals between each layer
of CC5 were achieved by applying an automatic thermal welding process along each joint.

Al Jais is a Wadi in the heart of Ras Al Khaimah. In January 2012 the RAK Government began a road-building project to allow tourists to reach
the peak of the mountain range.
For this project, the Resident Engineering Company was Halcrow, with GMC as contractors. The key issues for the road was inclement
weather; large volumes of rain, which fall in a short period of time and in many cases only once every couple of years, cause erosion of the
slopes which in turn fall and block the road or wash parts of it away. Halcrow sought a fast and effective solution for creating gullies on the
mountain side to channel the water. Due to the steepness of the slopes old fashioned methods, such as precast channels or insitu concrete
with form work and steel were difficult to implement and added significant time, potential for injuries and increased costs.
Concrete Canvas offered an innovative, rapid and reliable solution to the problem, reducing risks significantly and decreasing installation time
by only needing to be pegged into the slope. The installation team were roped off so they could work on the very steep slopes with safety and
relative ease. Minimal heavy plant was needed on site, with a single crane used to lift and position the bulk rolls of CC. Hydration was achieved
by pouring water down the gully. The workers are roped off so they can work on the very steep slopes with relative ease.

existing pond liner from UV damage, providing a viable alternative to a standard geotextile due to its increased
durability and speed of installation, and resistance to UV degradation, physical damage and puncture.
CC8 was installed in transverse layers, starting at the base of the slope, using a Komatsu 210 excavator
and spreader beam equipment. The first layer was fixed directly to the existing pond liner using CT1 adhesive,
with subsequent layers overlapped by approximately 100mm in the direction of water flow and fixed in the same
way. At the top of the slope, CC was fixed to the inlet structure using a combination of CT1 adhesive, hammer
screws and a length of GRP batten, helping to prevent water ingress. Hydration was achieved by flooding the weir
from an adjacent pond and letting it run over onto the CC.
Installation of 600sqm of CC8 was completed by a two-man team in two days, despite working in low
temperature conditions. Both the installation team and the client were very happy with the installation, citing CC’s
ease and speed of installation and its increased durability compared to other geotextile solutions.

Very little training or instruction is required in the use of CC; the mine’s installation team were fully instructed in just under two hours and the
installation was completed without the need for specialist equipment or labour.
Several vent seals were constructed using CC, each with an average area of 20sqm. On each vent opening a brattice-backed wire frame was
erected and CC was cut and hydrated, before being fastened to the frame using 8mm industrial gauge cable ties to create the vent wall. Voids
between the surrounding rock and the CC vent wall were then filled with a low off-gassing spray foam that is approved for underground use.
Vale were impressed with their first experience of CC and cited the following advantages over their traditional methods as reasons for the
success of the installation and why they would recommend CC for future projects:
- Quick installation
- Less challenging to install than shotcrete
- Safe in remote locations
- Cost savings of around 20% compared to traditional methods
The speed of installation on the project reduced planned closure times, which in turn resulted in financial and time savings. The use of CC in
remote areas also meant that fewer workers were involved in moving equipment, supplies and machinery, allowing further savings.
CC is now used to erect vent walls in three Vale properties and is scheduled for use in other underground mines.
“We think that the CC is tailor-made for our remote mine locations. It offers us a
reliable solution for these areas and makes our daily work lives easier.”

Below are direct cost comparisons between 2 popular and widely used vent closure methods in underground mining. The third method,
(Concrete Canvas) has been used for approximately 18 months by Vale Inc. in 3 different mine sites.
Steel Stoppings
Pre-fabricated, 1’ steel panels that are actually 2 panels telescoping

Storage
Steel Stoppings (SS) and shotcrete both require a dedicated and sizeable storage area. Concrete Canvas (CC) requires a clean, dry storage
area large enough to fit a 4’ x 4’ pallet.
Handling
SS panels in this application are 1’ wide and 10’ high and require special equipment to move and install due to their size and weight. This
requires considerable time and energy from the supervisor to coordinate men and equipment.
Shotcrete also requires significant planning from a supervisor to make provisions for men, equipment and supplies to be moved to a project
location. This often takes an entire shift, depending on a vent wall’s location within a mine.
CC requires only 2 labourers, hand tools and water. All of the required materials are small, easily portable and readily available on site.
Preparation
SS, shotcrete and CC all have similar preparation requirements prior to installation. However, CC requires fewer tools to prepare.
Installation
SS requires two labourers, jacks and other hand tools to install once the panels have been moved to location. Installation time is comparable
to CC.
The installation of shotcrete requires one skilled and two unskilled labourers in addition to specialist equipment, supplies and a power and water
supply. Shotcrete also takes longer to install, as the outermost portions of the closure have to set before the rest of the installation can proceed.
CC requires two labourers to cut, hang, fasten and hydrate. Once set, any voids can be filled with a low off-gassing spray foam that is suitable
for underground use.
Shotcrete requires maintenance to repair cracking from vertical and horizontal pressure, resulting in leakage and potential failure from blast
concussion. This requires varying degrees of preparation, manpower and equipment to effect a repair.
CC requires minimal maintenance. Openings for doors and windows can be created and framed easily and if cracking occurs simple repairs
can be effected using only hand tools and water.

Using batched rolls of CC5 meant that the 3-man installation team were able to carry the material to site without any plant
or specialist equipment. After being cut to length on site using hand tools, the CC5 was hung, shaped and fixed to a British
Gypsum branded aluminium stud wall system and securely fastened using wooden battens, 200mm steel strips and screws.
The whole structure was then hydrated using a portable water supply.
British Gypsum were very impressed with the end result. They were confident that CC would prove to be more durable than
brattice cloth, whilst being less expensive and easier to mobilise and install than concrete block walls
Concrete block vent walls had proved expensive and difficult to install Brattice cloth had also been used but only as a temporary measure
Vent walls had also been constructed using locally produced gypsum board, but these were prone to rotting

Installing at a rate of over 450sqm/day, the project was completed in under a week and was 70% quicker to install than if
shotcrete or gunite had been used.

www.polytrade.cl Channel section being lined with CC at high altitude
In late 2011, Concrete Canvas (CC) was specified to line melt water channels at an open pit mine in southern Chile. The pit, mined for gold,
silver, copper and other minerals is located in the Andes mountains, in the southern reaches of the Atacama Desert, at the border between
Chile and Argentina.
Melt water erosion, high UV levels and wind speeds of over 100km/hr had degraded the existing channels over a number of years. The integrity
of the channel network is vital to avoid flooding of the pit from glacier melt water. Located at over 5000m above sea level and subject to sub-
zero conditions, traditional concrete solutions are cost prohibitive, time intensive and difficult to install.
Using plant, spreader beam equipment and bulk rolls of CC, the contractors were able to line the channels at a rate of over 200m/hr. The speed
and ease of installation was critical to the safety of the installers. To combat the low temperature conditions, frost sheets and warm water from
the nearby mine were used to hydrate the CC.
Different thicknesses of CC were used to match variations in ground quality and profile at different sections of the channels. 1, 2 or 3 longitudinal
CC layers were used as the width and depth of the channels varied. Adjacent CC layers were overlapped and screwed together using collated
auto-fed screws, whilst joints and steep sections were fixed to the rocky substrate using steel ground pegs.
In total, over 52’000sqm of CC was used to successfully line the remote network of channels in extreme conditions.

Concrete Canvas (CC) is a versatile construction material that has a wide variety of applications across a range of sectors. CC has predominantly
been used for ditch lining in the private civil construction industry, but increasingly CC is being specified in the mining sector for general water
management projects across the globe. CC can be installed quickly, and is uniquely suited for installation in remote, difficult to access sites of
all terrains and in all weather conditions making it ideal for time-critical mining works.
Following the recent success of a 52’000sqm CC installation in the Alta Montaña III region of Chile, Ledcor Group, acting on behalf of Walter
Energy, specified CC as a protective liner for a large carrier ditch, directing mining industrial waste water from Willow Creek mine to a nearby
settling pond.
Willow Creek is a large open pit mine located 45 kilometres west of the town of Chetwynd, in northeast British Columbia. The mine is a truck
and shovel operation and is capable of producing both hard coking coal and low-volatile PCI coal for steelmaking.
The customer specified that the lined ditch had to be as water proof as possible, handle freeze/thaw conditions, and be easy to repair. The
carrier ditch was 10.5-12 meters wide, between 3 and 5 meters deep and approximately 650 metres long. The overall size, performance
requirements of this particular application, as well as the cost potential meant that Ledcor were reluctant to use Shotcrete.
CC was dispensed in bulk rolls from spreader beam equipment and was cut to length on site, minimising waste as lengths were cut specifically
to each section of profile. No perishable formwork or additional reinforcement was required.

The ditch was excavated from a blasted rock substrate, with some sections reinforced with concrete block work. CC layers were pinned into
position at the top of the profile using 10” Ardox galvanized spikes. When fixing CC to the concrete block work sections, Hilti rock anchors
were used. In its unset flexible state prior to hydration, CC can be fixed to almost every type of substrate using standard off-the-shelf fixings
or adhesives.
The ditch terminated in a 4m diameter corrugated steel and concrete block work culvert and sump which was also lined with CC to ensure
minimum water loss, as water was contaminated from tailings and could not come into contact with any other water sources.
Grouting was chosen in areas that may be prone to heavier flows and related scouring. In an effort to minimize the possibility of potential debris
dams, grouting also eliminated the lip that was caused from the overlap of CC layers.
The fibre reinforcement inherent in CC gives a durability and design life well above competitor geomembrane products, whilst the integral PVC
backing ensures minimal water loss in the carrier ditch. The CC will moss over in time, blending in with the surrounding environment but will
prevent root growing vegetation, reducing the need for maintenance of the ditch.

Traditionally, poured concrete would have been used to line the ditch. However, site access for plant and machinery was limited and the project
had time constraints due to upcoming work on an archeological site adjacent to the proposed location of the ditch. CC was deemed to be the
perfect solution to these problems due to its portability, speed of installation and ease of use in difficult to access areas.
The ditch site was prepared and cleared and two bulk rolls of CC8 delivered to site using a crane truck and spreader beam equipment. The
CC8 was unrolled at the foot of the site and carried by the installation team along the length of the proposed ditch in two sections, before being
shaped to the ditch profile and fixed in place with ground pegs. A 200mm overlap was created on the join between each section in the direction
of water flow and secured with screws. The CC was then hydrated using man-portable water tanks, poured along the full length of the ditch.
A 14-man installation team were able to complete the 125sqm ditch in four hours, with little training and readily available hand tools. The nearby
archaeological site remained undisturbed and the Los Pelambres Mining Company, impressed with the ease and speed with which CC was
installed have already specified that it be used in several future projects.

CC used as effective

solutions.
Concrete Canvas (CC) was specified in the construction of vent walls at Marblaegis Mine, an underground gypsum mine in
Loughborough, UK. The mine’s owners, British Gypsum, had encountered problems in building vent walls in the past; using
concrete blocks was a slow, expensive process requiring specialist labour. Brattice cloth could only be used as a temporary
measure due to its durability, whilst their self-produced gypsum boards were quick to install but prone to rotting. British
Gypsum therefore required a durable, flexible, cost-effective alternative.
Using batched rolls of CC5 meant that the 3-man installation team were able to carry the material to site without any
plant or specialist equipment. After being cut to length on site using hand tools, the CC5 was hung, shaped and fixed to a
British Gypsum branded aluminium stud wall system and securely fastened using wooden battens, 200mm steel strips and
screws. The whole structure was then hydrated using a portable water supply.
British Gypsum were very impressed with the end result. They were confident that CC would prove to be more durable
than brattice cloth, whilst being less expensive and easier to mobilise and install than concrete block walls
Vent walls had also been constructed out of the gypsum board the mine produced, but these were prone to rotting

Concrete Canvas (CC) is a flexible concrete impregnated geotextile that hardens on hydration to form a thin, durable,
fibre reinforced concrete layer. Used predominately for above ground drainage applications, the material can also be
used for hard armour capping of earth bunds around oil refinery tank farms, munitions depots and flood defences.
Erosion Protection
CC provides high level protection against degradation of earth bunds
by preventing surface erosion from wind, rain and freeze thaw. CC
significantly extends the operational life span of the bund, reducing
through-life maintenance and rebuild costs.
Rapid Install
CC can be installed at a rate of 800sqm/day by a 6-man team, reducing
time required on site and significantly reducing overall project costs.
Weed Suppression
CC acts as an effective weed inhibitor, eliminating the maintenance
required with grassed or earth bunds whilst providing a safe surface for
trafficking.
Conforms to Protrusions
CC has excellent drape characteristics, allowing the material to conform
in and around existing infrastructure, form sealed joints around pipe
protrusions and negotiate sharp bends and variations in bund profile.

The following guide provides useful information for installers, customers and specifiers of CC and provides an
overview of installation techniques for the lining of bunds. The versatile nature of CC means that this document is
not exhaustive and is intended for guidance purposes only.
Here are some key areas questions that you may need to consider before specifying or purchasing CC.
Which thickness?
• CC5 is most commonly used to line secondary containment bunds where there is not expected to be any regular
trafficking i.e. maintenance contractors.
• CC8 and CC13 are recommended to line flood protection bunds and for areas where there is expected to be
regular trafficking by maintenance crew or when lining access points.

CC should be fixed to the substrate at the foot of either side of a bund. This can be achieved using a variety of fixing
or capturing methods; most commonly CC is anchor trenched. Alternativly, the CC can be fixed using ground pegs,
weighted with aggregrate or captured within a curb or fixed using concrete anchors into a drainage ditch or headwall.

CC TitleRetaining Wall Trial : Selangor, Malaysia
The trial site was located on a 25m stretch of the Langet river where persistent erosion had led to the loss of vegetation, resulting
in accelerated degradation of the earth-berm. All previous attempts at abating the problem with piling had failed.
Batched lengths of CC8 were laid horizontally and pinned to the inside of the existing piles to form a retaining wall. The retaining
wall was then backfilled with earth to stretch the CC8 and pre-load the fibres. The incoming tide was used to hydrate the Concrete
Canvas to create a pre-tensioned concrete wall.
Early indications show that the CC retaining wall is an effective erosion control measure. The trial was completed using man
portable batched lengths, but the installation could have been made even quicker using bulk rolls of CC. This would allow over
200m of retaining wall to be installed in a matter of minutes.

COMSA EMTE
i Concrete Canvas
(CC) was used
to protect a slope
from erosion at an
electrical substation

The system allows both the HV cable and the protective covering
to be laid concurrently at a rate of 1000m/day. In 24 hours the

excellent impact protection from accidental damage. The system
provides significant labour and time savings over conventional

Concrete Canvas has passed the Category A Weather Resistance requirements - the highest level of weather resistance for fibre cement
sheets:
“which are intended for applications where they may be subjected to heat, high moisture and severe frost”.
Based on these test results Concrete Canvas can be expected to resist normal weathering for a minimum of a 50-year life for outdoor

Title Data
CO2 Saving
Concrete Canvas (CC) is the only way of laying a thin concrete layer
from a prefabricated roll of material. This enables up to 150mm of
poured concrete to be replaced with just 8mm for many surfacing
applications. As a result, material saving of 95% can be achieved for
a typical construction project.
This directly reduces the CO2 footprint of construction work not only
through material savings but also through reduced road transport
and time on site.
Low Washout
CC traps dry concrete powder in a 3-dimensional fibre matrix. Testing
based on BS8443 to indicate the effect of underwater setting, shows
that CC loses only 3% by mass. By comparison, specialist underwater
concretes typically lose between 10-15% whilst also requiring much
larger volumes to be poured.
EA Approval (UK)
CC was approved for use by the Environment Agency (EA) Biodiversity
team in 2010 for the Church Village Bypass Project. Benefits cited
included ‘surface roughness to provide diversity in the channel’s
morphology’ and its ability to introduce ‘sinuosity in the channel line’.
Greening
Untreated CC will naturally ‘green’ over time as the textured top
surface allows moss growth, whilst the fibre-reinforced concrete layer
will prevent root-growing vegetation, which would otherwise restrict
water flow and increase maintenance costs.

Concrete Canvas comes in rolls 1.0m or 1.1m wide. absorbs energy from impacts.
Available lengths are 4.5m (weighing 60kg) or 200m
(weighing over 1.5t). Rolls come in three thicknesses:
5mm, 8mm and 13mm.
Materials quantity
Concrete Canvas can replace up to 100mm of
reinforced in-situ concrete in ditch lining
applications.
An 8mm thick roll is sufficient for many erosion
and ditch lining applications.
Materials wastage
Off-cuts do not generally occur. Unused lengths
can be left on the roll for the next project.
No perishable formwork or additional
reinforcement is needed.

TRI/Environmental –
Erosion Testing Lab;
Clemson, SC USA
TRI Environmental,
i Inc. ran hydraulic
testing for Milliken &
Company to quantify
the hydraulic flow
capacity of the
Concrete Canvas,
and answer the
question “how much
water can flow over
Concrete Canvas
before it is dislodged,
lifted up and/or
washed away?”
When the testing was complete, TRI had subjected the Concrete Canvas to the highest water velocities and shear forces
possible at their test facility. Concrete Canvas did not fail during the test, enduring water velocities in excess of 25 feet per
second.
The goal of the test was to understand the characteristics of Concrete Canvas when subjected to water flow under installation
conditions that approximated a real-world installation of the product. To achieve this goal, it was decided to set up two
channels, one with lap joints shingled transverse or perpendicular to the direction of flow and one with lap joints longitudinal
to the direction of flow.
In addition, to test the potential to use Concrete Canvas for repair applications, two patches that projected up into the water
flow were installed at the end of the second channel. Both patches were connected to the underlying material with screws, and
one also included an adhesive bead to provide additional sealing capacity.
The information contained herein is offered free of charge and is, to the best of our knowledge, accurate. However, since the circumstances and conditions in which such information and the products

Concrete Impregnated Fabric... liability, with respect to or arising from use of such information or any such product.
In addition, both channels used three (3) different kinds of joint connections as described below:
1. One connection section used adhesive to connect the upper layer of Concrete Canvas to the lower layer,
2. One used screws, and
3. One utilized only gravity.
This variety of lap joints was constructed in order to assess capability of different overlapping techniques. An anchor trench
was used to restrain the first two layers in the first channel with the lap joints shingled transverse or perpendicular to the
direction of flow.
A consideration in developing the test protocol was deciding how to eliminate or minimize edge effects from the narrow flume
width. Lining the walls of the channel with Concrete Cloth would have resulted in a stiffer cross section than would be
encountered in a normal field installation. It was decided to install a flat piece of Concrete Canvas with a thin membrane
attached to each side to prevent water flow around the edges of the 2ft width piece. This light weight membrane was attached
to the underside of the Concrete Canvas and run up the sides of the channel. This approach was selected to better simulate
the weight of Concrete Canvas over a large area project in order to focus the test on whether Concrete Canvas could
withstand the drag forces created by rushing water over the top of the product.

Curing
The product was hydrated according to recommended procedures, and sandbags were placed on top of the joint overlaps to
hold the Concrete Canvas layers together during curing. The sandbags were removed once the product was cured and before
testing commenced. The Concrete Canvas was allowed to cure to full strength (~10 days) prior to performing the flow test.
Concrete Canvas during installation Weighting edges during initial 24-hour cure
Test Observations
The test consisted of running water at various flow rates over the material. Throughout the testing process, measurements of
water height were made down the length of the channel.
No failure of any seam, and no movement was detected for any of the Concrete Canvas panels during the course of the test.
In addition, no subgrade erosion was observed as a result of the test.
Both transverse lap joints shingled in the direction of flow or longitudinal lap joints parallel to the direction of flow were
sufficiently robust to resist the flows encountered during the test.
All joint connection approaches (adhesive, screws, and gravity) resisted the flow velocities, with similar results for each
approach being observed. The installed patches also resisted the test flow conditions.

Maximum water flow over Channel 1 Maximum water flow over Channel 2
No separation at joints detected Only subgrade changes seemed related to wall seepage
Conclusions
From the TRI report, “All joint types and patches appeared to provide a dependable seal throughout the test.” Neither the
longitudinal nor the transverse overlaps showed any distress during even the highest flow conditions.
No soil loss was observed in either channel regardless of the velocities and flow depths experienced.
In short, the maximum amount of water possible at TRI’s test facility was run over the Concrete Canvas with no effect on the
installed Concrete Canvas.

Concrete
Concrete Canvas (CC) meets the fire regulations and demands
for many interior and exterior public localities. CC is fire-safe,
does not contribute to the surface spread of flames, has a
low level of smoke development and minimal hazardous gas
emissions.
Euroclass System
Previously, depending on the type of locality, fire safety
requirements varied from country to country. The Euroclass
system is replacing these earlier national classification systems,
which formed obstacles to trade. This new classification system
for the reaction to fire properties of building construction
products has been introduced in Europe by COMMISSION
DECISION (2000/147/EC) of 8 February 2000 implementing
Council Directive 89/106/EEC (Ref. OJ L 50, 23.2.2000). It
consists of two sub systems, one for construction products
excluding floorings, eg. wall and ceiling surface linings and
another similar system for floorings. A class marked with
capital letter from A to F indicates product behaviour in different
stages of fire development of which classes A1 and A2 are non
combustible products (see table below). Additional information
about smoke and flaming droplets release is marked in subscript
e.g. A2 s1d0. The Euroclass system additionally defines the
test methods according to which construction products shall
be categorised.
Page 2 Concrete Impregnated F
The system is divided into various classes in accordance to
the following:
B-s1, d0
This classification is the highest possible for flammable materials
and can be broken down as below.

AGGREGATE TYPE
50mm / 2’’
Hard Limestone
DATE of TEST: 25/26th February 2010
LOCATION of TEST:Saint Gobain PAM UK,
PIPE TYPE: 6’’ dia epoxy coated steel pipe
TEMP.:6 C (overnight 3 C)
NO DAMAGE TO PIPE COATING
Concrete Canvas CC13 is a Protective concrete cloth on a roll, which is draped over or under
pipelines and wetted to hydrate the cement within the system. The standard set product
was used and results obtained after 24 hrs with temperatures overnight of 3C
21 KG of 50 mm hard limestone was dropped on to a section of pipe covered in the
Concrete Canvas 5 times in a standard ASTM G13 test rig. The surface was analysed and
photos taken after each drop.
After 5 drops no damage was apparent on the surface of the concrete cloth. It was hard and
durable. No damage was recorded on the epoxy coating.
These results are presented as part of a series of tests looking at the protection afforded by various rock backfill protection grades when
impacted by different rock sizes and types.
