Rationale, course aims, and objectives

Rationale: [Why does this course exist?] To instruct primarily Engineering Geology
students in the use of geophysical logs and cross-hole seismic and radar
methods for rock mass and formation characterisation.
[How does it fit in with the rest of the curriculum?] This course is
compulsory for Engineering Geology students, and is open to all Earth
Science masters students.
[Compulsory course of which Major/Minor?]
Aims [Thinking from the prospective students’ point of view, what general
outcomes is the course designed to achieve? How will it contribute to
(≡ Leitidee; see document
“Lernziel-Planung”, chap.
them professionally?] This course aims to provide students taking the
1.1) Engineering Geology Masters Program with the know-how to design a
geophysical logging and cross-hole seismic program for site

characterisation and to interpret the data.

Objectives [List of learning outcomes as specifically as possible / Which skills,
knowledge, and experiences will be achieved?] The course will introduce
(≡ dispositive Lernziele; see
document “Lernziel-Planung”,
students to modern borehole logging techniques with the emphasis on
chap. 1.1) geotechnical rather than oil and gas well reservoir engineering. Although
the principles of operation of the various sondes will be covered, the
primary focus will be on application. For a given problem in a given
environment, the students should be able to design a logging program that
will furnish the requisite information. They will also be able to extract
information on rock mass/reservoir properties by combining curves from a
suite of logs. The students will also learn about surface-to-borehole and
borehole-to-borehole seismic methods for rock mass characterisation.
This will include VSP and tomography.

Teaching philosophy

[What is your approach for teaching this course? What are your expected teaching methods? What are
the students’ responsibilities?] Largely lecture based (2 hrs) with tutorials immediately following the
lectures. There will be one field trip to provide hands-on experience in running logs and one laboratory
practical.
