Student Reflection (Thoroughly answer all questions)
How has this clinical rotation helped to define your role as a nurse? Please explain.
The OB clinical was a unique experience. I was able to learn that nurses who work on the unit have different
roles. Some nurses operate as labor and delivery nurses caring for the mother during the labor process. Other
nurses work as postpartum nurses caring for mother and baby once baby is delivered. The labor and delivery
nurse passes her care to the postpartum nurse who follows the patient until discharge. I was able to see the
coordination of care within the OB setting. Yes, I think the LDRP setting is a fantastic example of the
importance of communication, continuity of care from one level of care to another and the importance of
keeping it all coordinated. The charge nurses on the CHC/FBP unit are exceptional.
Which objective did you accomplish during this rotation? How did you do it?
One objective I was able to accomplish was learning to recognize an alteration in client condition and intervene
as needed. I worked with the nurses who were assigned to my patient to monitor the client and her unborn
baby. When fetal monitoring indicated distress, we were able to intervene and reposition the patient to find a
position that was good for the baby and helped alleviate the distress. Ultimately, the client was c-sectioned due
to ongoing issues that could not be resolved by nursing interventions. This was a great experience for learning
about the importance of on-going assessment, intervention and re-evaluation as well as patient advocacy.
What are your goals for your next clinical rotation?
My next clinical rotation is in the acute care setting on a medical-surgical unit of the hospital. My goal is to
continue to utilize the information I’m learning in class and be able to apply them to skills when working with
patients. Good. I hope that even though OB is super specific some of the observations of the two days on
FBP will be applicable to your acute care experiences.
Faculty Comments/ Student Learning Goals (Goals must be established even if performance is satisfactory.
If an item was identified as N or U, narrative comments are necessary to clarify student performance along
with goals to improve performance).
My goal is to continue to participate in the clinical environment to the best of my ability, using the knowledge
gain in the classroom and applying it to real world patient care.
I would suggest looking at Outcome number one and how your experience in OB demonstrated the importance
of intervening based on assessment and apply that to your on-going experiences. It is the core of what we do
in nursing and will help you keep your patients safe and optimize their care. It will also help you develop your
own confidence as an RN.
