grinding/gouging to remove discontinuities, parent materials and other items made
from ferromagnetic materials to detect cracks and other discontinuities on the test
surface and recording the results of examination for GALLAF project.

5. PERSONNEL
Personnel performing testing shall be suitably trained and qualified to ISO 9712 or
other recognized national standard or certification schemes (e.g. CSWIP or PCN). Only
personnel qualified to level II or III shall carry out the interpretation and evaluation
of test results.
6. EQUIPMENT
A lifting power of at least 4.5 kg for the AC yokes and 18 kg for the permanent or DC
magnetic yokes at the maximum pole spacing shall be required. The magnetizing
(lifting) power of yokes shall be verified prior to use each day the yoke is used or
whenever the yoke has been damaged or malfunction is suspected. The results of
these verifications shall be recorded on the Magnetic Yoke Test Log (see Exhibit 1).
Normally, the AC yoke shall be primary technique to be used whenever possible. The
permanent magnetic yoke should only be used when a power supply is not available or
the working environment does not permit hot work.
a) Visual check the yoke for any physical damage, cracking of casing, wire connections
Page 5 of 18

- Lifting power check of electromagnetic yoke shall have been checked within the past
year
- The magnetizing power of yokes shall be verified prior to use each day the yoke is used.
The magnetizing power of yokes shall be verified whenever the yoke has been
damaged or repaired
- The lifting power of all yokes shall be checked daily.
- Adjust maximum spacing of poles from 75 mm to 200 mm depend on each yoke type
- Lifting power of yoke is accepted if yoke should be capable of lifting a standard weight
steel block as below:
For DC electromagnetic & permanent magnet yoke: a weight steel block of at least 18 kg
7. DETECTING MEDIUM
Either water or paraffin based magnetic ink, which meets the requirements of ASME
SE-709 / ASTM E709 shall be used. The particle concentration of mixed ink at site from
bulk shall be verified in accordance with section 7.1. The particle concentration of pre-
mixed ink (usually aerosol cans) will be verified by certificate from the manufacture.
The color of magnetic particles shall be chosen so that a high contrast shall be
provided on a white background.
Temperature limitations: the magnetic particles shall be used within temperature limits
set by the manufacturer. Under normal conditions, the wet particles shall only be used
for temperature range from 10oC to 52oC and the dry particle method shall be applied
for temperature over 520C
For each new batch of mixed ink from bulk, the particle concentration shall be checked
as follow:

The sample shall be allowed to settle under gravity only for approximately 60
minutes with petroleum distillate suspensions or 30 minutes with water-based
suspensions before reading. The batch shall be considered acceptable when the
solid’s concentration is within 1.2% - 2.4% by volume.
b) Break Test
Prior to the initial usage of each new batch of water based mixed ink from bulk, a
break test to check for adequate wetting properties shall be carried out as follow:
Prepare a test piece having the finish surface similar to subject to be tested
and apply a thin layer of contrast paint.
Apply sample of the newly mixed ink to the surface of the test piece.
The ink should flow evenly over the surface. If the ink collects in globules on
the surface, then it shall be rejected.
Particle concentration check and break test shall be repeated on a daily basis
and the result recorded on the Magnetic Ink Test Log (see Exhibit 2)
The magnetic inks shall be applied by spraying over the test surface
The excess particles shall be removed from the test surface by means of an air
blower with active magnetic current.
8. CONTRAST LACQUER
In order to improve contrast, a thin layer of a proprietary brand of rapid drying high
opacity white contrast, nonmagnetic lacquer shall be applied. The lacquer must adhere
firmly to the test surface and not be soluble in the detection medium.
9. SURFACE PREPARATION
The surface to be tested and all adjacent areas within at least 1 inch (25 mm) which
are subjects to magnetic particle testing shall be clean and free from paint, oil grease,

heavy scale or corrosion deposits and any other extraneous matter which could
interfere with the test. In most cases adequate surface cleaning will be achieved by
means of a wire brush. Surfaces may also be prepared by solvent cleaning, grit
blasting or a combination of these methods.
Welds will normally be tested in the as welded condition however where there is
reasonable cause to suspect the presence of defects it may be necessary to prepare
the surface by grinding.
After cleaning, a thin layer of white contrast lacquer shall be applied. The maximum
temperature shall be less than 52oC.
10. LIGHTING
A minimum white light intensity of 1076 lux (100 fc) at the test surface is
required during the examination and evaluation of indications. The light intensity,
natural or supplemental white light source (such as LED or fluorescent bulb), shall
be measured with a white light meter prior to the evaluation of indications or a verified
light source shall be used. Verification of light sources is required to be demonstrated
only one time, documented, and maintained on file.
Light meters shall be calibrated at least once a year or whenever the light meter has
been repaired. If meters have not been in use for one year or more, calibration shall
be done before being used.

Place the flux indicator in intimate contact with the material to be examined, the
strip may be held in place manually or with the use of an adhesive tape.
Hold or attach the strip tightly to the surface with the lines on the strip parallel to the
field.
Indicators provide the strongest indications when positioned so that the long side of
the indicator is perpendicular to the applied magnetic field.

Weld defined 3 lines will indicate a strong field and adequacy is present
Examination area shall be covered weld, heat affected zone (HAZ) plus at least
25mm each side.
All tested areas shall be examined at least twice. For the second test the magnetic
field shall be orientated perpendicular to the first test. The magnetized area shall be
considered to be not larger than a circle described through the contact points with
a poles spacing of maximum 200 mm
Inspection shall commence immediately the detecting medium has been applied
and shall continue during and for a short time after the application of the magnetic
field
The magnetic field shall be removed after the termination of MPI ink application.
All valid indications formed by magnetic examination are the results of magnetic
leakage fields. Indication may be relevant, non-relevant or false.
False indications are not the result of magnetic forces. Examples are particles held
mechanically or by gravity in shallow depression or particles held by rust or scale on
the surface.

An indication of an imperfection may be larger than the imperfection that causes it.
However, the size of the indication is the basis for acceptance evaluation.
14. DEMAGNETIZATION
When residual magnetism in the part could interfere with subsequent processing or
usage, the part shall be demagnetized any time after completion of the
examination.
Care should be exercised to ensure that the part is entirely removed from the
influenced of the AC yokes before the demagnetizing force is discontinued.
Post cleaning is necessary where magnetic particle materials could interfere with
subsequent processing or with service requirements. Post cleaning techniques shall
be as follows:
Any other techniques which may be used if they do not interfere with subsequent
requirements.
Acceptance criteria for structural welds shall be in accordance with Table 10.1 of
SD-NOC-STR-301 below:
Table 10.1 - Standards of Acceptance for Weld Defects in Structural
Steels
