ABSTRACT

The Au@Ag coreshell nanoparticles were synthesized by a three step cycle. The TEM analysis
of the coreshell nanoparticles are carried out to study the size and morphology of Au and Ag
nanoparticles. The UV-Visible absorption spectra further confirm the formation of Au@Ag
CNPs from their absorption peak. The absorption spectra of Au@Ag coreshell nanoparticles
show peak at ~500_nm and ~400_nm revealed the presence of Au and Ag nanoparticles in the
core shell. The ternary glass matrix based on silica/titania/zirconia was synthesized through the
non-hydrolytic sol-gel process. Fourier transformation infrared spectroscopy of the ternary glass
matrix was employed to identify the various vibrational modes present in the sample. The XRD
pattern successfully discloses the amorphous nature of the prepared SiO 2-TiO2-ZrO2 ternary
glass. The Au@Ag coreshell nanoparticles doped ternary matrix is prepared and coated on a
glass matrix by spinning process. Since the nanotechnology is gaining importance in elimination
of harmful reagents, the photo degradation and demethylation reactions of the methylene blue
(MB) by the Au@Ag coreshell nanoparticles where studied. The main absorption peak of MB at
664_nm decreased gradually with the sunlight exposure time, indicates the photocatalytic study
of the methylene blue. From this study it is clear that the Au@Ag CNPs exhibit excellent
photocatalytic activity against dye molecules and can be used for the elimination of harmful
reagents.
