1. GENERAL
1.1 SCOPE. This specification covers design considerations and purchase requirements for
flexible hose assemblies that are to be used in process services for Albemarle
Corporation. It defines the requirements for flexible metal and elastomeric hose bodies,
associated end fittings, related inspection and required testing. Each plant may also
have special documents, policies, and procedures covering the use of flexible hoses in
selected critical services. Corporate Procedure 03-4211, Flexible Hose: Requirements
for Use in Hazardous Service, shall also be followed.
1.2 EXCLUSIONS. Utility hoses (air, water, steam, nitrogen), firewater hoses, hydraulic
system hoses, small laboratory hoses, and expansion joints are not covered by this
specification. See Albemarle Std GG-1-2 for Utility Hose Coupling Standards. See
alsoAlbemarle Stds GG-1-3 and GG-1-4 for utility hoses for the Houston and Magnolia
plant sites.
1.3 OSHA COMPLIANCE. All design and construction done in the United States under
this specification shall be in strict compliance with the Occupational Safety & Health
Act of 1970 and all subsequent amendments.
1.4 REFERENCES. The following documents, latest revision, to the extent indicated, form
a part of this specification:
1.5 DEFINITIONS
Hose Assembly - Consists of a hose body with fittings or flanges connected to each end
and includes clamps, if any. The hose body may be composed of an inner liner (core or
tube), a central carcass (reinforcing), and an outer cover.
Flexible Metal Hose - Consists of an internal metal bellows usually surrounded by one
or more layers of metal braid.
Elastomeric Hose - Consists of an internal tube with multiple reinforcing layers and a
cover. Materials include, but are not limited to, natural rubber, synthetic rubbers,
Lined Metal Hose - Consists of a Flexible Metal Hose as described above with a plastic
liner (as specified) of a defined minimum liner thickness.
2. DESIGN. Hose assemblies shall be designed and selected in accordance with the following
criteria:
2.1 APPLICATION. Hose should be selected based on each specific service and
application for which it will be used. The Hose Checklist (Appendix A) includes most
of the common considerations for selecting a hose.
2.2 PERFORMANCE. Hose assemblies shall be designed to meet the performance criteria
given below:
b) Hose burst pressure rating shall be a minimum of 4 x MRWP for all services.
2.3 TEMPERATURE. Flexible metal hoses are suggested for use when the temperature
exceeds the limits of elastomeric hoses or when a metal cover is required for release
concerns. Where there is fire risk concern the use of hoses shall be limited to 4"
maximum size, and operating conditions of 500 psig and 450°F maximum and -20°F
minimum (unless the hose is cryogenic rated).
2.5 CORROSION. When a hose carcass may be subject to deterioration by the contents of
the hose, the cut ends must be sealed with a suitable material.
2.6 RESTRICTIONS. Crimped metal ribbon and single element metal type hoses are
prohibited.
2.5 CONNECTIONS. Each length of hose shall be fitted with end fittings attached to the
hose body as follows:
b) Metal hose end fittings shall be attached by welding in accordance with the ASME
Pressure Vessel Code, Section IX. Fittings may be flanged, butt weld socket weld
or pipe threads in accordance with applicable ANSI/ASME codes. Braided metal
hose assemblies shall be "cap welded" sealing the hose, braid, and braid sleeve,
prior to welding the fitting. Brazed fittings may be used with approval of Albemarle
Engineering.
c) Quick disconnect fittings must be of the interlocking type and should be provided
with positive locking devices such as locking nuts or safety clips with lanyards,
where practical.
3.1 GENERAL. The hose body and end fittings shall be suitable for continuous handling
of the contents under the specified service conditions including all potential chemicals
and associated concentrations and temperatures.
3.2 STANDARDS. Hose materials and end fittings shall be in compliance with all
applicable ANSI/ASME piping standards, specifically ASME B31.3. Additionally, the
materials for flexible metal hoses shall comply with the requirements of ANSI/UL-536.
4. INSPECTION AND TESTING. Hoses shall be inspected and tested in accordance with the
following requirements:
4.1 INSPECTION. If specified on the purchase order, the materials, fabrication and testing
of hoses covered by this specification are subject to Albemarle's inspection at the
fabricator's plant. Albemarle inspectors shall have full entry to all parts of the
fabricator's plant where work is being performed on the items ordered.
4.2 REJECTION. Albemarle reserves the right to reject any materials at destination that do
not meet this specification, the purchase order and all associated codes and standards.
Inspection and/or quality controls shall be in place to assure the following:
4.3 SHIPMENT. Shipment shall not be made until released by Albemarle's inspector;
however, any acceptance by Albemarle's inspector does not relieve the fabricator of the
responsibility of providing hoses in full conformance with this specification.
4.4 TESTING. Fabricator will provide documentation of Quality Control procedures and
test results related to routine testing of hose body, hose fittings, and hose assemblies to
confirm compliance with stated Working Pressure, Burst Pressure, and Electrical
Conductivity values. Hose test pressures shall be based on the pressure rating of the
entire hose as a fabricated assembly. Additional testing may be required for selected
applications as determined by the appropriate Engineering or Design Group.
4.5 RECONDITIONED HOSES. All reconditioned hoses must be re-tested and inspected
as follows:
b) Flexible metal hoses shall be acceptance (proof) tested using a hydro test at 120%
of the manufacturer's rated working pressure of the entire hose as a fabricated
assembly. A test at a higher pressure
may be specified as an additional requirement.
4.6 VACUUM TESTING Vacuum testing, when required, shall be per special
specifications provided for each application.
4.7 ELECTRICAL TESTING. When specified, electrically bonded hose assemblies shall
be tested to verify that the electrical resistance, measured from end to end fitting, does
not exceed 0.5 ohms per foot. Measurements shall be made during testing at the
MRWP, and after all other testing is complete.
4.8 STORAGE. Any hose which remains in storage for longer than 50% of the
manufacturer's recommended shelf life shall be re-tested per paragraphs 4.4 above.
Hoses should not be stored exposed to sunlight, which reduces shelf life.
4.9 FIELD INSPECTION. All hoses shall be visually inspected by the user and/or
contractor prior to their use for the following:
4.10 TEST DATA. Physical and chemical test data, or bills of materials on major parts shall
be furnished to the Albemarle inspector if requested. Certified copies of test data shall
be furnished to Albemarle as specified in the purchase order.
5. MARKINGS.
5.1 NAMEPLATE. Each hose assembly shall have a permanent name plate attached to
the hose. The name plate shall be permanently and legibly marked with the following
information by the manufacturer:
5.2 SERVICE IDENTIFICATION. Unless specified otherwise, each hose shall be tagged
to identify the item number and the service for which it is intended.
a) Machined or threaded surfaces shall be protected from damage during shipment and
subsequent storage with securely attached metal, solid wood, or plastic protectors.
7. GUARANTEE. The fabricator has full responsibility for the design, fabrication, and
construction of the hose assembly. Approval of drawings by Albemarle does not relieve the
fabricator of this responsibility. The fabricator guarantees the complete assembly against
defective materials, workmanship, or failure from normal usage for a period of 18 months
from date of shipment or 1 year after start of service, whichever is sooner. Defective
materials or parts will be repaired or replaced by the fabricator without cost to Albemarle.
