PM TYPES

Network Management System uses the Pasolink Management function in CTRL in the PASOLINK NEO
IDU as the interface for the NMS. The CTRL in each IDU can be configured as one of three types.

ROOT NE – GATEWAY NE (THE HEAD OF THE CLUSTER)

Root NE has direct access to the DCN and will provide the gateway and routing functions for the other NE(s) in the
cluster. The Root NE will route tandem traffic –intended for other NE(s) in the cluster. It will also provide remote
access to the NE(s) in the cluster via the DCN. This means that the NE configured as Root NE will provide the
connectivity between the NMS and other NE(s) in the cluster. Aside from this, the Root NE will also have to monitor
and handle its own alarms and monitored items and send SNMP traps to alert the NMS of changes in alarm status.
Moreover, it has to collect its own statistical data such as Link Performance data

BRANCH NE – (THE HEAD OF SUB-NETWORK)

This is the NE(s) that is located in between the cluster and has no direct access to the DCN. This NE will route
tandem traffic to other NE(s) on its sub network. Like other NE(s) it will also have to monitor its own alarm items and
status and collect statistical data such as Link Performance data

NORMAL NE
Normal NE is a data acquisition and control unit. It monitors and controls equipment at some remote location. Its
prime task is to monitor its own alarm items and status and collect statistical data such as Link Performance data

AUTO DISCOVERY
PASOLINK NEO NMS network can be created in two possible ways. One using the PNMTj to configure
each NE’s network parameters and using the PNMSj Auto Discovery function to search and discover the
connected NEs. Second method is to use the NETCFG TOOLJ to create the NEO NMS network and
downloading the config files to the NEs and PNMSj.
AUTO DISCOVERY
NEO Network Element IP address for NMS configuration can be set by PNMTj. Then connect all the NEs by back
to back cables and connect to the PNMSj. PNMSj can be programmed to search and look for the NEO NEs by
entering the Root NE’s IP Address in the auto discovery procedure. PNMSj then search for all connected NEs
automatically. Any new NEs added to the existing cluster can be discovered automatically. The discovered NEs can
be displayed on the PNMSj map window.

Auto discovery function in the PNMSj is available only for PASOLINK NEO equipment. Inc case other PASOLINK
versions are mixed with the NEO equipment in the same cluster, Net config tool should be used.

IP Addressing Scheme for PNMS-CPM Subnetwork

Root NE NMS port and PC PNMS LAN port must be located in the same sub network as shown above. In this
figure, the Root NE is connected to PNMS through LAN interface. The Root NE NMS port IP address acts as the
gateway to its PASOLINK NEO cluster. For example, Root NE passes an IP packet from PNMS with 172.20.101.3
to the destination NE.

For this PNMS and Root NE sub-network (A), PNMS uses a subnet mask of 255.255.255.252. (fixed). One
PNMS–Root NE sub network includes 4 IP addresses accordingly. However 2 IP addresses are not available
because one is assigned for network address, the other is reserved for broadcast address.

TOPC-E4014E-02-07415 NetConfigTool for PASOLINK NEO 8

Multi-Sub-Branch Network

PNMS uses a Subnet mask of 255.255.255.240 for subnet-B. Therefore one sub-network in CPM/Root NE cluster has 16 IP addresses.
Each sub network can accommodate 16 IP addresses. Available IP addresses for Normal NE/RPM CTRL are 13. Subnet-B is assigned
from 172.20.100.0 to 172.20.100.15. (16 IP Addresses) However 172.20.100.0 and 172.20.100.15 is not available because 172.20.100.0.
is sub network address and 172.20.100.15 is reserved for broadcast address. In addition one IP address is assigned to CPM/Root NE.
Therefore 13 IP addresses (for 13 RPM/Normal NEs) are available in Subnet-B (same as for all other sub network).
In addition IP address for next sub-network (Subnet-C) shall be assigned from 172.20.100.16. (172.20.100.17 to172.20.100.30 is
available), even if Subnet-B has less than 13 NEs (for example only one NE), Subnet-C is started to assign from 172.20.100.17. Operator
can set sub-netmask for each sub-network. For example, 255.255.255.248 can be assigned for Subnet-C in case there is no additional NE
in subnet-C in the future.
One CPM cluster can include maximum 32 sub-networks. Therefore one CPM cluster can accommodate maximum 512 IP addresses(16 IP
address x 32 sub-networks) . This maximum 512 consecutive IP addresses are reserved in PNMS.
