Rachel Borczuch THA 307 - Miss Julie Mini Paper
Rachel Borczuch THA 307 - Miss Julie Mini Paper
The play is about how upbringing and social class affect who you are and how you
love. Miss Julie was born a count’s daughter and therefore just followed her parents’ orders
and got what she wanted her whole life, which is why in the play she cannot make any
decisions for herself; she must have Jean tell her what to do, as she does when she packs a
bag, lets him kill her bird, and kills herself. Meanwhile Jean grew up working for these people
learning he needs to do whatever needs to be done to not struggle to live, which is why he
betrays Miss Julie. Honestly, I am unsure about why this play was written or what an audience
member should feel after seeing it. In my opinion, there is not a real protagonist or one person
that is likeable because everyone Is selfish except Christine (kind of). I did not get a real
message to take from it in terms of why it was written because the message it does send is
overdramatic and pretty one-sided. 1 think if this was done today, it would be to take the
drama of it all to send a message that social class affects us more than we think, and we
should be open to how they act and why they act the way they do.
