Presentation of the subject and the research question

The wine market in the bar today is extremely dynamic and has undergone huge growth since the
early 1990s. Wine is now an everyday commodity enjoyed by many people regardless of their
social status. Although wine is now widely available, the majority of bar and hospitality staff
have a limited but growing knowledge of wine. Nowadays the major reason for the bartender to
share the knowledge of the sommelier is the current change of lifestyle, at least as we see it in the
industrialised world. Fashion, health and lifestyle choices are helping to change drinking habits.
Wine and its story are unique. Civilised consumption of this beverage has helped to promote its
positive aspects, and today people might be drinking less but they are insisting on a better quality
of wine.
We will study the relationship and the impact between factors with different types of wines.
Wines are part of our lives and also play a very important role in French culture as we all enjoy
drinking wines with our loved ones specially family and friends. Furthermore, French people
love to try different wines whether it’s white or red wines as they are fascinated by the alcohol
drink.
Vines grow in the 30-50 degrees latitude band, in both the northern and southern hemispheres,
which usually contain a temperate climate. The Drinks Handbook Two thirds of all wines are
grown in Europe, one third are grown in the New World (Chile, Argentina, Australia, South
Africa, United States and New Zealand).
This topic of wine will help us to understand our research question “To what extent wine affect a
person health and is it harmful?”. This project could be useful to people who have never taste
wine in their life and provide them the knowledge of how wines are produced and what it
contains as this project could be taken to further to be a true source of information for the wine
industry.
Our objectives are to provide accurate results and analyses with meaningful recommendation in
our project and put our knowledge into practice what we have learnt in Data Analysis Class. We
have taken a sample size of 50 wines to pursue our study and answer all our questions regarding
the wines and mostly to answer our research question.
Since we are analyzing for a large size and dataset on order to provide significant results as the
scope for our project is very important if we want people and wine industry to benefit from it as
we wanted our project to be useful to the wine industry so that we can view their growth market
using statistics analyses.
Conclusion
We have decided to compare the relationship and the impact between some factors on different
wines and we wanted to see the influence that could have variables in terms of quantitative and
qualitative on the research question “To what extent wine can affect a person’s health?”. Wine is
very popular in France as the France population loves wines a lot because they are polychronic
and believed that wine is the only alcohol drink that brings family or friends together over a
dinner or build long term relationships with international business partners,
To answer our question, we have conducted a data analysis on the 50 best wines of all times. We
started a Principal Component Analysis, as this data reduction method allowed to pass from 10
variables to 8 variables that explains the most significance important and mostly relevant. We are
checking the quality of the wines as we wanted to understand to what extent wine can affect the
health of a person. We have our principal components which explains most of the information
and helps us to understand our analysis more easily. As 2 or 3 variables on the component are
related between each other and are the most important factors of determination. After analyzing
the KMO and Bartlett, we conclude that the wine is not harmful for a person’s health as the
variables of fixed acidity and other variables are selected in the manufacturing process of the
wines are proofed best quality.
To improve the PCA part we think that we could redo the analysis by dropping the
variables that do not meet the conditions with respect to the loading and see what the
results are.

However, our study may have some weaknesses as our sample size is small. A more
accurate analysis would take into account of different wines from all over the world.
Moreover, the lack of wines in the sample probably creates a bias in our results. On the
other hand, our results seem quite logical, suggesting the veracity of our analysis.
