State of Biodiversity in Antipolo

Department of Environment and Natural Resources; Biodiversity (Region 4A)

Antipolo City, Rizal is known for its excellent environment management and protection.
Antipolo is the capital of the province of Rizal, Philippines. As stated by the Department of
Environment and Natural Resources (2015), there are different flora and fauna that can be found
in CALABARZON. In addition, there are endemic species in the region as well. Based on a
study conducted by the Professional Environmental Management Company (PEMC) in 1995,
there are 123 species of wildlife in the region; (76) birds; (21) reptiles; (16) mammals; and (10)
amphibians. Region 4A has diverse coastal resources, which provided food and employment.
The region also covered portions of the Verde Island Passage Marine Biodiversity Conservation
Corridor, which is known to be one of the richest fishing grounds (DENR).

In the city of Antipolo, its biodiversity is very well maintained and sustained by the city
government. In relation to that, some of the tourists spot in Antipolo City are; Hinulugang
Taktak Falls, Mystical Cave and more. However, as the year progresses there have been changes
in the environment as well. There have been issues on the wastes in the Philippines that led to
enormous environmental problems. Based on a journal by Ocampo, Antipolo contributed to the
alarming waste problem in the Philippines. Prominent dumps around the country can be found in
Antipolo City, Montalban in Rizal and different areas all over the country (Ocampo, E.).
Moreover, the department of Environment and Natural Resources stated that in terms of the state
of environment in Region 4A, air pollution is not a major problem. Although this is not a
problem, there have been open dumpsites that were found in a few areas with industries.
2018 R4A ANNUAL REPORT

Based on an article, the DENR R4A (2018) has drafted a total of nineteen forestland use
planning and the city of Antipolo and other polaces in Rizal are included in this project. This
project manages and allocates forestlands areas properly. The following activities done in
forestland planning are first, data and map collection. Second, situational analysis. Third,
prioritization of sub-watershed and forestlands and fourth, plan preparation (Luna, M.). With this
project, the flora and fauna in Antipolo City will be well maintained. In order to protect the
biodiversity in Antipolo City, environmental management and rehabilitations are important.

According to a 2014 report about Biological diversity, Calawis Community


Rainforestation Training Workshop was held in Luzon, Antipolo. This workshop was
implemented in order to protect the community in Antipolo City. Trainings and programs like
that are important in order to maintain a good condition of biodiversity in Antipolo most
especially the flora and fauna.

HINULUGANG TAKTAK
PROTECTED LANDSCAPE (HTPL): A SUMMARY OF LGU INITIATED PROGRAMS
AND PROJECTS (2018)
Based on a Flora and Fauna Study, there are 11 families of tree species around the park.
The trees around the park are also known to be fruit bearing trees, which has Kaimito, Avocado,
Santol, etch.. There are also wildlife species found in the area. In addition, there have been
activities or programs for the rehabilitation of Hinulugang Taktak protected landscape such as
the Toka-Toka program and initial phase of the HTPL rehabilitation. Moreover, the Department
of environmental and natural resources together with the city government made an agreement
regarding the improvement and effective implementation of the Hinulugang Taktak protected
landscape management plan (2018). With that, the Hinulugang Taktak in Antipolo city will be
well maintained and strongly sustained. The support of the local government and DENR is very
important in protecting the biodiversity in Antipolo city most especially the Hinulugang Taktak
Falls and promote tourism development. The projects that were mentioned above are very
important in order to develop and benefit the local community.
