Universal Design for Learning (UDL)

For this lesson, I used iMovie to introduce student to a new topic. The topic covered in the movies is about
parts of a plant. The movie editing tool has many features that can be used to create engaging content for
students. For instants music and images can be embedded in your movie as well as other features. iMovie is a
excellent tool to use to introduce a new topic to students because it is more an engaging for students to learn
from visual input.

All learners can benefit from iMovie. Educators can use this tool with their visually or hearing-impaired
students. To accommodate for these students audio and captions can be added. English language learners can
also benefit from reading subtitles in iMovie because subtitles can be added in any language. Overall, iMovie
is a tool that educators can use to enhance all students learning experience.
Lesson idea implementation:

My lesson addresses part A of standard S1L1. The topic that will be covered is parts of a plant. The lesson will
start with the students watching the short movie about parts of a plant. While watching the movie the
students will have to write down three interesting facts the learned. After the movie, the students will lead a
discussion with the interesting facts they gathered from the movie.

After the discussion is over the teacher will display an image of a plant in front of the class. The students will
be asked to go label each part of a plant on the image the other students will be asked to write facts under
the labeled parts. After the students are done labeling the plant the teacher will address misconceptions and
information not addressed. The lesson will conclude with a craft activity in which each student will create and
label a plant they created out of construction paper.

Importance of technology:
Technology is important in this lesson because it is what captures the student’s attention, in my lesson the

movie is what introduces the new topic to the students which is why technology is crucial. Technology is also
crucial to students because they too can use the iMovie tool to demonstrate and present the knowledge they
gained to others.

Internet Safety and Student Privacy:

Although technology can be used to enhance student learning, first educators and students need to of
internet safety and privacy policies. With my students, I will have to let them know which websites they can
use. Another important thing to cover with the students when they create their digital projects is to go over
copyright rules. It is important to review internet safety rules with students to ensure that they are using it for
educational purposes and their privacy is secure.

Reflective Practice:
In my lesson, iMovie was used to introduce a new topic to the students. The purpose of iMovie was to introduce new
learning material as well as this tool to students. I will ask the students if they enjoyed iMovie if so, I will implement it in
other lessons.
To extend this lesson and further the student’s use of LoTi levels I will have the student create their own movie at the
end of the unit. The iMovie tool is user friendly so students will be able to use without much instruction from the
teacher. This would be a great way to make use of this tool to showcase student knowledge. Using this tool will also give
students creative freedom of what effects they will incorporate in their movies.
