Research Methodology

This chapter presents the research design, the instruments and subjects used in the

study together with the statistical treatment of data. Conducting studies of all sorts employs

techniques, methodologies, and instrument as well as the subjects.

Research Design

This research study focuses on the Impact of Mistress Themed Shows to the Youth.

The researchers used descriptive method of research in the attainment of necessary data

for the accomplishment of this study.

Descriptive research can be explained as a statement of affairs as they are at present

with the researcher having no control over variable. Moreover, “descriptive research may be

characterised as simply the attempt to determine, describe or identify what is, while

analytical research attempts to establish why it is that way or how it came to be” (Ethridge,

2004).

Research Instrument
The researchers use the survey method and conduct interview as well as focus group

discussion in order to get the needed information to accomplish this study.

A survey is consist of a number of questions related to the impact of mistress-themed

shows that will be answered by the respondents which are the youths. It mainly aims to

describe the characteristics of the respondents and to get accurate information about their

perception on the identified shows.

An interview is conducted to know the perceptions of the parents and experts like

Psychologist, and Movie/TV Director about how Mistress-themed shows romanticize

infidelity and what measures may be done to guide the youth viewers in watching the

identified shows as well as how these shows affect the youth viewers in some aspects.

Focus group discussion is also conducted to exchange thoughts and ideas among the

12-15 respondents which are the youth viewers for the purpose of getting information on

how mistress-themed shows affect their psychological, social and moral well-being.

Subjects of the Study

The respondents of this research for the survey and focus group discussion are the

youth viewers who are watching Mistress-themed shows frequently. To further understand

the topic, the researchers will also be needing experts like Psychologist and Movie/TV

Director as well as Parents as respondents for the interview. This study focuses on the
Impact of Mistress Themed Shows to the Youth in terms of watching Television and Film.

Youth viewers and experts, as respondents, are chosen by the researchers in order to

know the Impact of Mistress Themed shows to the Youth..

Data Gathering Procedure

To draw pertinent information needed to answer the specific questions of the study, the

researchers uses the questionnaire as the data gathering instrument.

A questionnaire is a form containing a set of questions especially one addressed to a

statistically significant number of subjects as a way of gathering information for a survey.

The first part of gathering data is asking for the permission of the youth, the

respondents. Attached in the questionnaire is a formal letter guided by the researchers and

the adviser, asking the respondents to answer the set of questions made in order to gather

the valid data needed in the study. The researchers personally give the questionnaires to

the respondents and wait until the respondents finish answering. A friendly approach is

made to be sure that they will help and may be willing to answer the questionnaires that the

researchers have made. The respondents are informed that every aspect in the

questionnaires that they have answered will be treated with confidentiality.

In order to conduct an interview, the researchers make questions that will be significant

to reveal informations to fully understand the topic. An expert to the related topic is asked

according to the needed informations.

Discussion about the topic is done with the a group of participants which are the youth

viewers. Relevant informations are explained. They are asked to answer some questions

and to share their experiences relevant to the discussed topic.

Validity and Reliability of Instruments

To validate the questionnaire, the researchers will submit a copy to their adviser for

corrections, suggestions, comments, and revisions.

The researchers will collect the questionnaires from the respondents, the researchers

will arrange the questionnaires for analysis. Together with the researchers’ adviser, they will

tally and arrange the output scores.

The researchers will consult for a statistician for the result of the questionnaires. It will

be calculated through the use of descriptive and inferential statistics. The researchers will

finally analyze its results.

The researchers will also discuss the topic and ask questions to the respondents to

generate information on collective views, and the meanings that lie behind those views. The

questions will move from general to more specific questions and question order will be

relative to importance of issues in the research agenda.

The researchers will also ask questions to the experts in accordance with their

knowledge, skills, abilities, personality and motivation. The interviewers will use situational

and topic-related questions.

All interviews and group discussion will be video recorded as this can help in data

analysis process.

Statistical treatment of data

There are statistical tools used by the researchers for more accuracy of the data. Such

statistical data are the percentage of frequency of distribution.

Percentage is a descriptive statistical tool that was employed in order to determine what

part of the tool the respondents fall under particular categories. The formula used in getting

the percentage is:

P= f/N x 100

Where:

P= Percentage

f= Frequency or the number of respondents

N= Total Number of respondents

Frequency is the actual number of respondents to a specific question or item in the

questionnaire. It is also referred to the number of tally marks for each category or item.
The researchers will also make use also of the weighted mean. Weighted mean of a

given group of data is the average of the means of all groups.

The formula in computing the weighted mean is as follows:

Wm= TV/N

TV=  ΣFVS

FVS= F1 V1 + F2 V2 + F3 V3 + F4 V4 + F5 V5

Research Procedure

The researcher will accomplish the production process or stages required to complete

the output of the study. These stages are known as pre-production, production and post-

production.

Pre-production. The researchers will talk about their plans in producing the output.

The materials needed like camera, questionnaires and others will be prepared. The

researchers will look for potential respondents which are the youth viewers of Mistress-

themed shows and experts as well as for the place where interviews and focus group

discussion will be
conducted. The activities during the production will be planned and prepared. This is done

to organize the overall vision for attainment of the goals in producing the output.

Production. The researchers will conduct a survey and get the data and information

gathered from it. Next, they will organize a focus group discussion with 12-15 respondents

to further emphasize understanding of the topic. Lastly, they will conduct an interview with

experts like Psychologist and Movie/TV Director as well as parents who has a child

engaged in watching Mistress-themed shows. All the activities will be video-recorded.

Post Production. The researchers will organizedly compile all the footages that are

captured. Editing stage takes place in this process. The output will be finalized. The output

will be used for educational purposes. The researchers will ask for the approval of

Department of Education (DepEd) to let the students of different schools watch the

documentary about the Impact of Mistress-themed Shows to the Youth.

Composite Mean 2.78 Disagree

The respondents did not agree that Mistress-themed shows are suitable to be

shown to the youth. The respondents also disagree with the following ideas:

young ones like to watch Mistress-themed shows; Mistress-themed shows open

the mind of the youth viewers when it comes to handling relationships; it harms

the perceptions of youth viewers; by watching it, young ones will get tempted to

be involved in extra-marital affairs in the future; it is recommendable to watch

Mistress-themed shows; more women are cheating on their partners; infidelity

doesn’t necessarily signal an unhappy relationship; infidelity is widespread;

Mistress-themed shows are interesting; Mistress-themed shows create bad

image for women; Mistress-themed shows are actually telling what’s right thing to

do when in a relationship; Mistress-themed shows create an impact that infidelity

is just an ordinary problem in a relationship; Mistress-themed shows create bad

image for men by showing that they are the ones who usually cheat.

The above ideas are the possible qualities of Mistress-themed shows . It is seen

in the chart that these qualities are opposing the respondents’ perception as

seen in present situation. The data infer that Mistress-themed shows are not

harmful to the perceptions of UB Senior High School students but still, not

recommendable to be watched.

In the table, the respondents agreed on the following ideas: Mistress-themed

shows manipulate the youth viewers; youth viewers get moral lessons from these

kinds of show; parents shall guide the youth viewers in watching the said kind of

show; Mistress-themed shows have theme, language, violence, sex, etc. which

are not suitable for very young audiences; Television shows and movies reflect

real life trend.

It can be seen that majority of the respondents agreed that Mistress-themed

shows show theme, language, violence, sex, and others which are not suitable

for very young audiences and that Television shows and Movies reflect real life

trend. The weighted mean of those two concepts, 3.29 and 3.06 imply that Senior

High school students of University of Batangas have seen not suitable scenes for

them on Mistress-themed shows and that they assume cases of extra marital

affairs in real life as they watch the said kind of shows.

The Composite mean of Table 11 is 2.78 with the verbal interpretation of

disagreeing to the posted assumptions on Mistress-themed shows. However, the

researchers inferred that the following are the perceptions and assumptions on

Mistress-themed shows based on figures: Mistress-themed shows show theme,

language, violence, sex, and others which are not suitable for very young

audiences; Television shows and movies reflect real life trend; Youth viewers get

moral lessons from these kinds of show; Parents shall guide the youth viewers in

despite of the downfalls that sometimes test not only their capability but also the toughness

of their friendship.
