Market Barometer
The local benchmark, nifty 50 ended the first day of a week on a strong note after recovering its
lost ground in the day’s trade.The index oscillated in a tight band to gradually inch
closer towards the neutral line however, a late spurt in buying interests helped the
fifty stock index recoup close to triple digit gains from the low point of the day to
close a tad above the psychologocal 5,900 level. The overall sentiments remained ex-
tremely optimistic through the day and market breadth remained dominantly in fa-
vour of advancing stocks at 1028 against 272 declines in the last. The markets regis-
tered volume of over Rs 1.4 lakh crore while the turnover for NSE F&O segment re-
mained on the lower side compared to Friday at over Rs 1.23 lakh crore. The India
Volatility Index (VIX), a gauge for market’s short term expectation of volatility, soared
4.34% and reached 22.57, while S&P Nifty climbed 50.30 points to close at 5,907.65.
The market breadth on the Nifty remained in favour of advances which stood at 37
against 13 declines. Nifty December futures saw an addition of 5.48% or 1.36 million
(mn) units, taking the total outstanding open interest (OI) to 26.35 mn units. For Nifty
calls, 5900 strike price (SP) from the December series was the most active call with a
contraction of 0.05 mn or 1.27%. Among Nifty puts, 5800 SP from the December
month expiry was the most active put with an addition of 0.71 mn or 10.25%. The
maximum Call OI outstanding was at 5900 SP (4.58 mn) and that for Puts at 5800 SP
(7.65 mn). The respective Support and Resistance levels are: Resistance 5,949.00
