Name Clauses and Sentence Structure There are four kinds of sentence structures: simple, compound, complex, and compound complex. They are all created by using only two kinds of clauses: independent clauses and subordinate (dependent) clauses. A clause is a group of words that contains a subject and a predicate. The main clause (independent clause] expresses a complete thought and can stand alone as a sentence. INDEPENDENT CLAUSES: — John has a dog. Tina eats apples. Jeremy had a horse. A subordinate clause (dependent clause) does not express a complete thought and must be attached to a main clause. The dependent clauses are underlined in the examples below. A complex sentence contains each least one independent clause and at least one subordinate clause. DEPENDENT CLAUSES: §9=— John has a dog when he stays with his mother.
