This document summarizes the ingredients and mode of action of Dial Clean and Refresh Antibacterial Body Wash. It contains water, sodium laureth sulfate, cocamidopropyl betaine, and other ingredients. Its active ingredient is triclosan, which acts as an antibacterial by inhibiting fatty acid synthesis in bacteria. It does this by binding to the bacterial enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase enzyme and preventing it from participating in fatty acid production, which bacteria need to reproduce and build cell membranes. Humans do not have this enzyme so they are not affected.

MODE OF ACTION: At in-use concentrations, trilocsan acts as a biocide, with multiple cytoplasmic and membrane targets. At lower concentrations, however, trilocsan appears bacteriostatic and is seen to target bacteria mainly by inhibiting fatty acid synthesis. Trilocsan binds to bacterial enoyl-acyl carrier protein reductase enzyme (ENR), which is encoded by the gene Fabl. This binding increases the enzymes affinity for nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NAD+). This results in the formation of a stable ternary complex of ENR-NAD+-triclosan, which is unable to participate in fatty acid synthesis. Fatty acids are necessary for reproducing and building cell membranes. Humans do not have an ENR enzyme, and thus are not affected.
