Assignment - 1 (Spring 2020)

Instructor: Dr. Bappaditya Bhowmik

(1) If A and B are two subsets of Rn , then prove that

(i) If one of A and B is open then A + B is open.
(ii) If A and B are closed, is it necessary that A + B is closed? If not, give examples.
(iii) Prove that if one of A and B is compact and other is closed then A + B is closed.
(iv) What about the sum if A and B both are compact?
(2) Let K ⊂ R be such that every continuous function on K is bounded. Show that K is compact.
(3) Let f : [a, b] → R, define G : [a, b] → R2 by G(x) = (x, f (x)) (the range of G is the graph of
f ). Prove that the followings are equivalent: (i) f is continuous; (ii) G is continuous; (iii) the
graph of f is a compact subset of R2 .
(4) (i) Prove that every map f : N → R is uniformly continuous.
(ii) Let f : R → R and a ∈ R. Define F (x) = [f (x) − f (a)]/(x − a) for x ̸= a. Prove that f is
differentiable at a if and only if F uniformly continuous in some punctured neighborhood
of a.
(5) If f : R → R is continuous and open, show that f is strictly monotone.
(6) Prove that there does not not exist a continuous function f : R → R satisfying f (Q) ⊂ R \ Q
and f (R \ Q) ⊂ Q.
(7) Determine whether the convergence of the following sequence of functions is uniform or not
on the given domain?
(i) fn (x) = x2 e−nx on [0, ∞)
(ii) fn (x) = n2 x2 e−nx on [a, ∞), where a > 0. What about if a = 0?
{ − x) on [0, 1].
(iii) fn (x) = nx(1 n

nx2 , 0 ≤ x ≤ 1/n
(iv) fn (x) =
x, 1/n < x ≤ 1.
(8) Suppose that fn : [a, b] → R is an increasing function for each n, and that limn→∞ fn (x) = f (x)
exists for each x ∈ [a, b]. Is f increasing?
(9) Let f : R → R be uniformly continuous and define fn (x) = f (x + (1/n)). Show that fn
converges uniformly on R.
(10) For each n ∈ N, let fn (x) = limm→∞ (cos n!πx)2m . Show that the sequence {fn } converges on
R to the function χQ , the Dirichlet function. If [a, b] be a closed and bounded interval, show
that each fn is integrable on [a, b]. Is the convergence is uniform on [a, b]? What about if ‘ cos’
is replaced by ‘ sin’ in the above expression?
(11) Let fn : R → R be a sequence of functions such that it converges uniformly on every closed
and bounded interval [a, b]. Does it follow that {fn } converges uniformly on R?
(12) Let {fn } be a sequence of Riemann integrable functions defined on an unbounded∫interval∫ I of
R and converging uniformly to some function f on I. Is it still true that limn→∞ I fn = I f ?
(13) If f is continuous on [0, 1] and if
∫ 1
f (x)xn dx = 0, n = 0, 1, 2, · · ·
0

Prove that f (x) = 0 on [0, 1].

(14) Prove that the following series of functions are uniformly convergent for all x ∈ R. Show that
the derivative of the sum function can be obtained by differentiating the series term-by-term:
∑ ∑∞ sin nx
(i) ∞ 1
n=1 n2 +n3 x2 ; (ii) n=1 n3 .

1
∑∞ x
(15) Prove that the series n=1 n(x+n) is uniformly convergent on [0,1]. If f (x) be the sum of
∫1
the series, prove that f is continuous on [0, 1]. Also prove that 0 f (x) dx = γ, where γ =
limn→∞ (1 + 1/2 + 1/3 + · · · + 1/n − log n).
