Your Name: Danika Acosta Date of Activity: Faculty name: Kaylynn

Batista

Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
specific about the purpose and your role):

I attended a children with diabetes seminar at TMC. The purpose of the seminar was to learn
about the different pumps and ways to administer insulin and the math to use for calculating
amount of insulin to give. My role in the seminar was to learn more information about type 1
diabetes in children, how to use their pumps, and administering insulin. I also volunteered at Z
Mansion with Nancy McGuckin. The purpose of Z Mansion was to provide care to the homeless
and to provide food for them to take with them. My role was to assist the doctor with
assessments, wound dressings, and percussion therapy.

Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?

The seminar was at TMC and it was 6 hours long. Z Mansion is located near downtown and is
provided by the man who owns the home. We helped at Z Mansion for 2 hours.

Discuss the value of this experience to you (be specific).

The seminar is valuable because it gave me knowledge on insulin pumps that I did not have
before. While I do not want to work with pediatrics, if I ever had to help a child who has a pump
I will be more prepared now than I was before the seminar. It also gives me information if I’m
working with an adult that has a pump. Z Mansion is valuable because I learned more about a
population that doesn’t have the same access to healthcare as other populations we have worked
with. I learned that they are grateful for the little bit of care that Z Mansion provides, and it
makes me want to continue going to help.

How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?

I would use the seminar information for when I interact with patients who have diabetes and for
those who have pumps. I would use the experience at Z Mansion to understand that not
everyone has the same privileges with health care. Some people cannot afford the care they need
and so doing everything you can to help those in need will make a big difference in their lives.

Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why or
why not? (Describe)
I would recommend the seminar to anyone who is working in pediatrics since the seminar was
had a pediatric focus. I would also recommend it so people can be refreshed on insulin
administration and type 1 diabetes information. I would recommend Z Mansion because it gives
a different perspective on healthcare in a low income/homeless population. Again, not everyone
has the same privileges so to be able to see what some of the population has to deal with is eye
opening and can really change your perspective on these individuals.
